American Express Velocity Platinum Card - $249/Yr - Free Return Flight/a (No Coast to Coast)

20

Hi,

Just got the amex offer in the mail (also available online) for an American Express Velocity Platinum card with a discounted annual fee at $249 (normally $349). The card comes with the perks of the normal undiscounted Velocity Platinum. The one catch is that there's no coast-to-coast fly route option on the discounted card. For me, ex Perth I get to go to Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha and Newman. So no deal for me.

But there's a nice destination offering if you base in east coast. This card would be a nice attachment to the infamous Edge Platinum if your partner can't get one.

Edit1: you'll be hard pressed to look for the annual fee of the card from the campaign page. Because it's not there. You gotta go to the apply page, click on "Key Facts about this card" link. And card fee should show up. Why would they try to hide the card fee? I don't know, that's the sole selling point for me.

you're better off with the Citi Signature card

    • May I ask why is that?

    • +10

You might as well be better off buying a bunch avocados and have it with salad. Totally different purposes between the 2 cards.

  • Don't forget to check the Wiki for referral bonuses:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

    • sadly there's no referral bonus for this one, since you'll have to apply via the "Apply now" button on the campaign page.

      • Just had a look - doesn't even look like the referrals are working any more anyway…
In the past the referrals offered similar discounts and offers.

Oh well. Was good while it lasted.

  • So, when you say free return flight, on Velocity Platinum….. does that mean you fly business class?

    I don't understand credit cards… just curious :)

Thinking of getting one for my fiancee (soon to be wife) for the free flight. Could you fly from Bris to Melbourne?

    • Platinum is just the name of the card. It's nothing more than a name. The flights will still be regular cattle class (economy).

  • Better off just getting their regular offer with this card which is 50,000 Velocity points (after $500 spend) and the regular $349 annual fee. Those points are worth more in gift cards than $100.

    • but then you'll pay the same $349 next year

      • the trick is not to renew the next year. Or at least threaten to not renew hoping for a waive of the annual fee =)

        • true that

      • Good point. I just assumed it was for the first year only.

  • Hmmm are you sure you dont get the 50,000 points with this cheaper rate annual fee?
The annual fee is $349 with same benefits + 50k velocity points… they dont have 2 different offers going?!?
