entertainment system.

Customer Feedback "I use this player connected through a Yamaha A/V Receiver via HDMI projected on a 150" screen for playback of DVD's and DIVX/XVID movies on a USB stick. Sure its not Progressive Scan at 1080 as with Bluray but how many people sit within inches of the screen anyways? Ive got 100's of DVD's in my library and Im not willing to pay out for a new "Bluray" library anyways, Great product and price A+++"

Complete waste of money when LCD / Plasma TVs upscale anyway from standard TV or DVD signal.

    • Really? So are you saying that a normal DVD player would do the job?

      • -2

I'm saying you're not going to get better quality. Whether the DVD or TV does the upscaling you're stuck with the inherant quality of the DVD format.

        • Depends on the quality of the inbuilt scaler. Obviously at $78, you can't compare it to a decent scaler, eg. Faroudja. Whilst your comments may hold true given that this player is aimed at entry level, though once you move up beyond Kmart/Target/HTiB/Yumcha range, there ARE definitely improvements to be seen.

For those who are interested in some information on DVD players that has decent upscaling performance, check this out - http://www.cnet.com.au/top-5-upscaling-dvd-players-339279347…

    • Absolute nonsense.

Based on what? Since TVs do upscaling anyway what is the advantage of this DVD player? Does it magically turn your DVDs into BluRay? No it doesn't.

        • You can't upscale a DVD player with composite AV as its an analogue signal that supports a maximum of 576i/p lines resolution
The only way to upscale a DVD is via HDMI or component as they support a digital signal throughput at 1080i. The difference is massive in picture
quality. Sorry but you are 100% incorrect.

          • @choppy: but is $78 really that good?

            • -2

@JPOWER: 1/ Its USB 2.0 lots of the cheap DVD players only have USB 1.1 which is slower
2/ Its will play most major media files including Music, Video and Pictures from DVD, USB enabled HDD 2.5" & 3.5", Card Reader or USB Flash drives
3/ Its will upscale MPEG4,XVID/DIVX files that may be low quality to 1080i via HDMI
4/ Its got a built in Dolby Decoder AC-3 not found on cheap DVD players
5/ Its got a lot of connections including Card reader, PC output and 5.1 channel audio to name a few

@choppy: This post is just SPAM IMHO

@cperry: So I take it you couldn't come up with any other factual advice?
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.

                  • +2

@choppy: Well your both right, and both wrong.

Upscallers are not all built the same, and it depends on the upscallers built into the TV and the Player.

@choppy: My factual advice is as above. Your post is absolute nonsense. You're not upscaling through a composite input, the upscale is inside the TV. Again, this post is SPAM. Even if the DVD player was useful, it certainly aint a bargain!

                    • @cperry: Ive got one of these connected to a Sony XPR Bravia 42" via HDMI and would more than happy to offer one up as a demo to prove you wrong. Please email me [email protected] & I'll one out to you tomorrow to test and decide for yourself. I'm hardly trying to spam its fact not fiction.

                      • @choppy: can you send one to me to try? : )

  • I bought a DVD player like this one a few months ago at Retravision for only 50 bucks (discount is also available for old customers). My one is a bit different. It doesn't have HDMI and card reader, but I can just take my usb card reader and plug it in.

  • Ok guys. It's all personal preference here.
Unfortunately, it's neg from me, because from experience, upscaling from 720p to 1080i does look blurred and gives me headaches due to the interlacing.
Plus, there are cheaper drives out and whether they come with HDMI or not, it doesn't matter because it's overkill for DVDs.

      • When did you buy the Sony Bravia?
Actually, I think that what you meant to say was that your TV is Sony Bravia XBR.
(The sizes available were 40,46, 52 when I got one. Now it has the RGB Dynamic LED ones, which are available in 46" and 55". They give superior shades of black. From memory they are the XBR45 series.)

Again, coming to the issue at hand, the upscaling can be done at BOTH the player as well as TV level. Till now, the upscaling done at players is MUCH superior, but cannot compare with BD quality.

Personally, I think the one the crazystu are offering is a good deal- and is real value for money when you see the features vis-a-vis the cost, and I am voting positive.

        Cheers,

        EDIT:
I am not buying this, since I have a nice BluRay collection, but can be a good deal for those people who have a HD TV, and DivX movies/ digatal copies of movies that they want to view after upscaling.)
There are numerous other DVD players that do the same job, but this player seems to have additional features.

I have found PS3 to be a decent upscaler for DivX movies and the BDPS 5000ES is amongst the best- better than Toshiba XE1.

        • Thanks Varun, Sorry a typo there

  • cperry or Kuric are you willing to take me up on this offer?

    • Hi, I'm seriously looking for a player like this under $100. I've Sony Bravia V series LCD TV. In case if I don't like the quality of this player (in case if there is any blurr or video breaks), can I send the player back to you and get my money back???

  • while i don't really agree with upscaling as all it is from my understanding is interpolation (like those 1MP cameras that where being advertised as 8!)
you can only pull so much info off the disc.(hence new technology created)

but as far as DVD players go this one is still fairly nicely featured at a decent price.

wonder about the brand quality at that price though.
