  • Is there any way to watch this on an Apple TV or WDTV Live?

    • +2

      I have the AFL subscription and just Airplay it from my iPad to the Apple TV.
      It's actually quite high quality especially when they're streaming the Fox Footy Channel feed. Very watchable on my 46" tv.

      Not sure if this desktop pass is the same though..

      • I've found it acceptable, but the quality of the AFL's international streaming site (http://watchafl.afl.com.au/) is much better.

        • You find the watchafl.afl.com.au to be better? Just looking at the resolution/bitrate scares me!

          Streaming Video Resolution
          We currently stream to multiple devices in the following formats and bit rates.
          For Desktop web (flash) a resolution of 512 x 288p and three varying profiles lo, mid and hi (336.0 kbit/s, 536.0 kbit/s and 736.0 kbit/s, all with a frame rate of 25.000 fps)

          For iOS we offer an adaptive bitrate and resolution with the following profiles:
          640 x 360p
          536.0 kbit/s; 25.000 fps;

          480 x 270p
          336.0 kbit/s; 25.000 fps;

          416 x 234p
          200.0 kbit/s; 25.000 fps;

          For Android and other mobile platforms we offer mp4 streams:
          640 x 360p
          536.0 kbit/s; 25.000 fps;

      • As unco said, Airplay works well enough, but a free trial is the perfect way to test this out.

        This service is best value when you have a phone on Telstra, because the streams are unmetered. However, to Airplay you need to be on WiFi - if anyone has worked out a way around this let me know (Telstra LTE is often faster than my ADSL connection, and I'd love to be able to Airplay the games via that instead).

        • I've been using my Nexus 5 and miracasting to my Play2TV - you don't need to be on WiFi for that and it works quite well.

          However the feed is pretty terrible quality on my 60 inch TV - I'll be switching to 'Watch AFL' after the 2 week trial is up, much higher quality feed.

        • I'm assuming that 'Watch AFL' service requires a VPN/DNS Server (eg. getflix.com.au subscription). Does it?

        • Yeah I use Unotelly but I believe GetFlix now supports AFL too and is a tad cheaper.

        • I believe so. It is also more expensive, if I recall correctly.

          EDIT for clarity: I believe the WatchAFL subscription itself is more expensive than the Telstra subscription, VPN/DNS costs aside.

    If you plan on staying past the free trial period, and stick exclusively to one ecosystem (Apple or Google), it is worth investigating paying directly via in-app purchase with credit purchased on special (such as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/136130)

    • Yeah I load up on the buy 1 get 1 free iTunes $20 cards from Harvey Norman to renew my AFL subscription.
      It makes the fee more bearable.

    You can also sign up to Foxtel Play for a 2 week trial. AFL channel can only be watched on mobile device however the rest of the channels can be played on a PC/Mac. I did that to watch the Carlton game on Sunday. I'm sure the OP is happy. :(

    • Yes neil, I'm happy!

    • Does that work if you've already got Foxtel Go ?

    Thanks OP

    Yeah don't activate it until round 2.. otherwise you only get 1.5 rounds.

  • What does Watch AFL Live (the international) feed broadcast in? I'm keen to explore this with a VPN as my recent foxtel connection (solely for the AFL) has turned out to not be able to provide HD - SD through RCA cables looks ghastly!

    • Have a squiz @ Porthos' comment above, it's poor & $150/yr - Outragous for SD quality.

      At least the NRL do their stream for free if you're in the right country, such as Iceland.

  • When is the offer valid to? Cos they could remove it straight after Round 1

    I've tried to sign up today to watch the Geelong/Port game and although it let me sign up and I had an email saying that my free trial had been activated. Nothing.

    • You didn't miss much… ;)
