Same product is on special at Costco for $14.99 for two ($7.49 each). Normal price at Costco is $18.99 for two ($9.49 each). So it's nearly $1 cheaper at Coles and you only need to buy one.

I've always said Costco isn't cheaper if you're smart about what you buy at Coles/Woolies (i.e. if you stick to the specials) and this is just another example. If you're an idiot and pay full price at Coles/Woolies then yes Costco is generally marginally cheaper.

Costco have some unique products which may justify the membership fee for some people, but if you go there because you think general groceries that you can get elsewhere are cheaper then you're mistaken.

    • Agree totally however my view of Costco is that it saves you time. You can shop monthly rather than weekly as you buy in bulk, and don't need to monitor the weekly loss leader specials from the big two.

The membership fee could be viewed as an "entry fee" if you went more regularly. For instance going 12 times a year would be $5 per visit and you will definitely be saving then.

Whats stoppimg you from shopping monthly at Coolies?

          Price of course!!!

          Different specials each week.

Isnt that a good thing? You get a larger number of items on special !

        • I'm not following. You agree that Coolies can be cheaper than Costco but you don't bulk shop at Coolies due to price?

        • When the big two have specials on, don't just buy one, buy enough to last you for 2-3 months!

      • If you do your shopping monthly how do you get fresh bread, milk etc?

        • Tip top white bread has so much preservatives that it stays 'fresh' for months!

      • I bought a 2kg bag of chopped up lettuce for lik under $5 at costco, the amount of time/effort/and $ saved at costco is immense.

        • 2kg of lettuce is roughly 3 heads. So you paid $1.66 per head. You can get lettuces cheaper than this from most local fruit shops so really the benefit to you was that it was pre-chopped.

Of course if you want to make sang choy bow…

Frankly, buying your fruit & veg / meat from local operators can be so much cheaper than Woolies/Coles/Costco/Aldi - people don't bother to shop around they just think the large chains must be cheapest. And that's not even including markets where if you really want to buy in bulk and save then go to markets and don't waste your time or money at Costco.

        • I work at coles, so I know that lettuce is 2.98 each. Every 2 or so months they get reduced to $1.50/$1. My 'local' decent fruit shop has them at $2 avg. I buy other stuff from the fruiterer but certain things are just better at costco.

  • I combined this with Coles $90-$10off/$120-$20off offer.

I had $10 off $70 and bought 3 off these Costco style :P

Always buy in bulk the non perishable loss leader specials :D

  • 1lt bottle is cheap but the bottle is too big. It's not easy to use. I kept 375ml empty bottle and used it as refill.

I note that Dove soap bars are now made in Indonesia, rather than Germany. For what that's worth.

    • Nearly all this stuff comes from Thailand,Indonesia,South Africa,China,Philippines now :(

  • If you have trouble finding this on the shelves, try the end of the isle.
