Lockpick Set $20 Including Shipping (Usually $25) @ Pickpals

410
ozbargain

MOD: Please read the warnings about buying lock picks in Australia. It appears that it is not illegal to buy them in Australia (although you might have problem importing from overseas shops). Owning them is okay as well. However as with carrying them, you need to be either a lock smith, or be able to produce reasonable explanation, i.e. try not to carry them around.

ALERT: We have shipped all orders placed as of 20/03/2014 and have stock again! Hooray

Hi!

We've just launched our new web store and are offering 20% off our basic set of lockpicks to ozbargainers. Just visit our site and enter the code ozbargain on checkout.

Locksport is becoming an increasingly popular hobby worldwide, it is focused on the legal and ethical practice of lockpicking in a competitive setting. Our store aims to provide tools to both the locksport and locksmithing communities.

The Set

Our introductory lockpick set comes with three picks and two tension wrenches, capable of opening most pin tumbler locks. The picks are presented in a stylish leather pouch.

This set includes the most commonly used picks and tension wrenches to match.

Getting Started

Not sure how to use these tools? That's ok! We have a getting started guide which should explain the basics. Click here for some info. You can also check out youtube for lots of info and demonstrations.

Shipping

We ship all items via registered post, it normally takes about a week for the item to arrive.

Back Orders

If we run out of stock you will be able to place a back order, you will get exactly the same price but it may take up to three weeks for your order to arrive. The stock level is indicated clearly on the website, so please be aware of this

Legal Status - PLEASE READ

We provide these items legally, but you need to be aware of the law governing possession of such items. This document outlines it very well, read from page 17 onwards.

We recommend using these for hobbyist/locksport purposes within your own home only and on locks you legally own but are not in use. Picking your front door lock is not a smart idea as you may damage or break the lock causing extreme inconvenience.

In the meantime, for just $20 you, being experts in breaking locks, get our addresses, and have a fair idea we are the kind of people that buy loads of stuff!

    lol

Interestingly in the last decade in Australia there have been zero burglaries where lockpicking was the suspected means of entry.

The fact is burglars are just too lazy to learn a skill and just reach for the nearest brick :P If they weren't I suspect they'd just get real jobs….

      • +4

Either that or youre very crafty, and we dont notice youve been in, and when we finally notice that item missing, we think we lost it.

        • Either that or youre very crafty, and we dont notice youve been in

Yes, I'm going to risk my life and a prison sentence to break in just to steal eneloops lol

  • +1

id get these in a pinch

  • +11

Can confirm, this is cheaper than the merchant selling me lockpicks in Whiterun.

    • +2

Stop right there criminal scum. What business do you have in buying lockpicks.

      • At level 100 you can take their pants off without them so much as questioning you.

  • +7

Wouldn't it be hilarious if you were locked out and you can't get to your lockpicks because you keep them at home.

    • +16

The co-owner of the company actually had this happen to him about a month ago.. Hes gonna rage at me for posting this…

      • +1

        bahah, gold.

also rep, just for interest do you have a brick and mortar store? there isn't a physical address listed on your website

    • +1

… and here I was thinking those individual cam thingys didn't latch! Why make them latch that way!? I'm no locksmith but surely just leaving them spring up & down freely would make it a lot harder to pick right ie. all cam thingys need to be raised simultaneously to allow the lock to unlock?

      • +1

The way this works is that the channels are subject to small machining errors, which mean when you try to turn the lock barrel there is only one pin stopping it from turning that little bit. Once that pin (the binding pin) is raised it locks in place.

You are absolutely right, better locks are machined much more precisely and are much more difficult to pick as a result.

    • No brick and mortar store sadly. Maybe one day :)

This is a side thing for us, we're three guys each with day jobs just doing this on the side.

We are all physically located in and ship from Perth.

  • +2

Kind of apt to read this when I've been playing Thief all day. :)

    • +1

Yep, I'm set to grab everyone's cups and cutlery. :)

  • +1

why not get this set for $8.98 from aliexpress

    • +8

Good question! If you look at that set it includes a lot of different hook style picks, which are good for a technique called single pin picking. The set doesn't include a standard rake style pick though, which is one of the most commonly used.

The metal on those picks is actually quite a bit thicker than ours, which makes it hard to use on some smaller locks.

Additionally, I'm not sure what type of metal those are made from, but ours are made of premium quality spring steel.

I know I can't be trusted to give unbiased advice, but that set was actually the first I purchased when getting into lock picking for the first time. They really aren't very good :(

    • +2

I've got a Southord set and a cheapie set with plastic handles that looks like that aliexpress set.

The plastic handles make it easier to hold, but the metal on the Southord definitely feels stronger.

And yes, you'll want a rake which the cheapie doesn't include. It's very jaw-dropping the first few times you use it!

  • hmmm.. i ended up using 2 paper clips when I was stuck.

    • Cool :)

I have to ask, was it a padlock? if you managed to open a door with paper clips… mad respect.

      • +1

        Probably hand cuffs!

  • This is something good to invest and learn. Thanks OP.

  • +2

Let me think ………… sex toys banned on OzB ………. burglary tools OK.

    I get that. :)

    • +2

Yes that's right, bricks and screwdrivers are not banned on OZB.

  • +2

Man these things will pay for themselves easily!

    • +7

reminds me of that Futurama episode where Bender pretty much says:
I won't buy that $10,000 cigar because I only have $300, but I will buy that $300 burglary kit.

  • +6

I don't really need one of these sets but I'm compelled to buy one purely because the REP is so engaging! Cheers for the input REP.

    • Hah, thanks :)

Me and the other guys who run PickPals are just really into lockpicking, so its nice to talk to people about it.

Thanks to all you guys for having questions & showing an interest!

      • Any deals on a pick set & clear practice lock bundle? Just saw a few cutaway practice locks in different formats elsewhere and they're about half the price of your clear one.

  • Product looks to be a good price and the rep is definitely high quality. I won't be buying but it's an easy upvote from me.

  • +1 from me, not something we see every day here.

What if the cops find this on me?

    • +5

Just say they're for your girlfriend's chastity belt.

    • Check the link in the original post.

It really depends on which state you're in, and in some states even if its day vs night.

Essentially I wouldn't suggesting carrying these in public, there is a law called "going equipped for burglary" or "possession of housebreaking tools" depending on which state you're in. This law also covers possession of crowbars, screwdrivers, etc.

  • You might run into some problems with PayPal. This type of business (lock picking) is against their terms of service. That is, if someone were to report your website to them, otherwise they'll be none the wiser.

    • Thanks for the heads up, we'll swap payment processors ASAP.

      • We've talked with paypal, they're fine with lockpicks, yay! (even though eBay isn't).

Seems most of the lockpick retailers around the place make use of paypal too. So all safe. Thanks for the warning though, it would have been an unpleasant surprise.

  • +2

    welcome back :D

    • +1

Should be put back up the top of the list to be given fair exposure to all OzBargainers… not just us lucky ones who saw it while it was still there! FWIW I didn't get around to ordering mine last night after all that because the deal disappeared before I was able to… but I just ordered mine then. Cheers.

      • +1

That'd be nice, but not to fear, we will certainly be posting new deals sometime in the future.

    • Thanks :) Glad to be back!

  • +2

Do you sell any cheap practice locks?

    • +1

I just bought mine on eBay. Search 'Worldwide' for 'practice lock' and you'll find a nice cut-away padlock for around AU$26 shipped.

      • Cheers although $26 is a bit expensive for me.

Have you found it useful with regards to learning how to pick locks?

    • +2

Not at the moment :( But check out the post above mine, there is plenty on ebay :)

  • +1

Keen enough just to give it a go (yes, on my own locks!). Well, it looks easy enough in the movies anyway…

    • Definitely check out a couple of the youtube videos on lock picking. The movie guys demonstrate horrible technique :P

      • what, MacGyver's swiss army knife picking skills aren't real??

        • +6

MacGyver is a special case. Everything he does is real.

        • +5

^… And this is the comment that pushed me over the, "Should I Buy It" edge… Well played OP… Well played indeed.

  • +1

Realistically, it'd just be a toy for me as I can't see myself ever actually needing it… But I'm so tempted as it'd be cool to learn and a great party trick!!!

  • +4

I'm not even sure why i'm buying this but i am…

    • +2

Its because lock picks are cool.

      You're welcome :)

  • During the "lock-up" phase of my house build, I became quite adept at lock-bumping. Could break into any of my locked doors within 10 seconds, once I perfected the action. But lock-picking is the next evolution. I'm in! :)

    • Different issue… but… we had a house built a year ago and one thing I keep thinking about is the need to replace all the locks. How do you know the builders & tradies didn't keep a key for themselves or get more cut!? I think it's a bit silly really, we all put so much faith in the goodness of others making it SO easy for others to take advantage of us :(

Builders build a house which involves a dozen tradies. Extra keys get cut or originals don't all get handed over. A year or two after you move in one of them helps themselves to all your valuables but as there is no sign of a break-in the insurance company wont pay out!

I installed my first camera on the front of the house yesterday but I think I'll be installing more ASAP. It'll look like a Meth lab but hey at least it'll be cheaper than changing ALL the locks around the house.

      • I'd put both cameras and new locks.

How many external doors do you have anyway? If they're good locks you can just rekey them without having to change the whole lock.

        • We have a fair few and I can easily change barrels etc. myself but I've wanted cameras installed anyway so I think I'll just go down that route instead then change the locks later if need be. Wouldn't surprise me if our locks are the cheapest junk the builder could find as we were the victims of paying top dollar and getting a way less than acceptable build. Definitely not an 'OzBargain' house!

        • +1

yes. but as a spy with long term parking you probably aren't home that much anyway.

        • Touché Cornbeef… touché :P

      • +3

Looking forward to a bargain tin-foil hat thread on OzB.

      • +1

I've re-keyed a few of my locks. Kinda opposite to you though, making it easier for the tradies to steal my stuff.

Getting a locksmith was going to cost me a few hundred bucks, so I ordered a "lockwood" barrel pin kit online, and barrel guide (a MUST HAVE!). Once you have flung a few pins and springs across the room never to be found again, you get the hang of it. I rekeyed 2 locks on my front door. I'm sure with a hand file and a calliper you could alter a key. Just 1 pin changed is all you need.

I enjoyed it. I got into lock picking a few years ago when I watched a locksmith get through a lock of mine in about 2 seconds.

  • +3

Rep, I'm very interested in this. But I think I'll hold out until you have more variety of stock.
    Please keep posting deals!

    • Don't worry, you'll hear more from us!

  • +1

Good deal and up vote from me. Sad that if this will never be useful in a practical scenario unless you hide this kit outside your door

  • +1

To be honest, it seems like a useful skill to have. I've locked myself out of my house about 5 times last year. Luckily I can parkour my way through the balcony (neighbours give me shocked looks when I do this).

However, my girlfriend had to call a locksmith for $125 to unlock her door (30 seconds of work). If I had these in my car….

But if there is a chance of breaking/damaging a lock or if one of these picks broke inside (Damn Skyrim), then it stops me from buying them.

PS. This is probably the first occurrence of lockpicks being posted on ozbargain, but anyone could buy them elsewhere if they wanted to. If they really wanted to break in, they would find other ways, you certainly don't need lock picks or lock picking skill set to break in.

    • +1

If they really wanted to break in, they would find other ways

True, there's a way that they seem to be able to do it for free in my area… They use a rock or brick!!!

  • it's a good deal if these are "good/solid" metal…..

    • The picks are made from ~0.55mm thick spring steel. The metal is much nicer than that you'd find on aliexpress/dx sets.

  • Cheers REP, got mine today! Will see how much havoc I can cause when I get home tonight ;)

    • Good to hear :)

  • Everything ordered before today 20/03/2014 has now been shipped, we also have stock again, order away!

PS. We filled two australia post mailboxes with this shipment.

  • +1

    Got mine delivered today.

Gave it a try on a rarely used locked door.

Fluked it with the rake in about a minute, then tried again with the feeler(?), and got it in about 5 minutes :)

I'm gonna waste a lot of time with this thing…

  • +. Don't have the money to blow on this right now but that's a good price and the customer service appears to be great.

  • has this expired already?

    • +2

Keep an eye out. We will have something new coming up shortly :)

  • Anymore discount rep??? Need one toooo

    • +1

Don't fret, we love you guys.

There will be a new offer sometime soon.

  • Practice locks are cheap at Masters.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140343

    • A practice lock has a transparent or cutaway body so you can see what those security pins are doing as you're manipulating them.

On the other hand, locks that you can practice on are cheap at Masters. :)

    • Thx grabbing a set :)
