  • Awesome price for the highest-spec Sony blu-ray player at the moment. I guess they are bringing out BDP-S5200 soon.

    • End of Line Offer.

    • the 5200 is due late march

and I would consider the BDP-S6200 the highest spec Sony blu-ray player at the moment

      • and I would consider the BDP-S6200 the highest spec Sony blu-ray player at the moment

Sorry I should have been more specific - the highest-spec model available in Australia at the moment.

      • Looks like local vendors have pushed Sony for a cheaper model, ie, if numbers in model nomenclatures are any indication…

But I don't get -why- WiFi is useful in such a player…?

Is this just a way to bring non-Sony TV's into Sony Network
        - so Sony can sell more content?

(After all current Bravia TV's have Internet)

        • +1

          Partly, yes

Also partly so that Sony players offer a value proposition, by offering free features like Iview player, sbs on demand, yahoo 7, ten, etc.

Most of the paid ones are of course Sony's own, but not all I believe. I won't comment further on that as I use no paid services, but I still use it at least daily, great unit.

If you bought a Sony camera recently, you may have a $30 coupon for Sony accessories in the box. That coupon works for this!

    • is it a one off coupon or generic

      • +3

It's a unique, one-off coupon printed on on a plastic gift card. :)

        • Contacted Sony store online, they said that e-coupon from purchase of digital camera is not eligible for purchase of this blu-ray player or any other stuff that are not camera accessories.

    • That sucks! Where is my $30 coupon!! My gf bought me an $500 Sony Tablet, and I get nothing?

      • +1

Probably only included them with cameras — the gift card says it's only for "camera accessories", but it works fine for this Blu-Ray player. :)

        • It doesn't work fine, works fine when you placed the order but when they finalize the payment and preparing the despatch they will contact you to cancel the order or proceed with the order without e-coupon applied.

        • They already charged me for the item, and I asked them to refund me the postage.
Lol, they didn't ask me to cancel my order though, but they have told me that they cannot refund the postage.

        • Lucky you, since I don't have 3D TV, cancelling 3D blu-ray player is fine with me:D
peer pressure for placing the order in the first place:D

        • Just got the receipt confirmation saying that it has been dispatched. lol. Looks like Sony is still gonna honor some of the orders placed using the eCoupon from Cameras.

Mine was from a RX100 camera btw.

    • Does it work on anything in the sony store? I've got mine from a camera purchased back in November, valid through to March.

      • I just bought this Blu-Ray player with mine so I'm unable to test it on other things in the Sony Store. Add stuff to your cart and see!

        • Was it a green card saying 'Genuine Accessory Ecoupon' ?

I'm getting error of 'Ecoupon entered is not valid for this customer type.' when I try to use it on the bluray player (just to see if it works)

        • +2

My card was orange. I think you need to register/sign in to MySony to use the card, at least according to the instructions on the back. :)

        • +2

I got shipping of $12.95 charged when I try to use the $30 coupon. Anyone else facing the same issue?

        • yes, no free shipping if use voucher, bad form Sony!

        • I got shipping of $12.95 charged when I try to use the $30 coupon. Anyone else facing the same issue?

I noticed that too, but you can seemingly still get a shipping discount if you add something else to your cart which says "Free Shipping for My Sony Members" on the product page. For example, if you add this camera case to your BDPS5100 order you'll get $9.95 subtracted from the $12.95 shipping cost: https://www.sony.com.au/product/lcs-u11

Sony's website might be buggy, since the gift card itself seems to indicate that shipping is free for "any Sony purchase". Maybe worth contacting them?

        • +2

Did you know that the e-coupon can be used many times?

        • Hrmmm.. your right! Seems I can manage to get a camera case & 4gb microsd card for $1.95.

Dont want the 4gb microsd, but have to have the order above $30 for the coupon to work.

          Here's hoping - a 16gb microsd, a 4gb microsd and a camera case for under $12. Thats a bargain!

        • T&C doesn't say that it can only be used once. However they might find out and terminate this loophole if abused. There aren't many useful cheapie items under $50.

        • Yes buggy, this is what I am counting on when I ask for the shipping to be refunded

        • Why are you counting on them to refund shipping? lol. you using a coupon which isn't meant for this item.

It was clearly meant for camera accessories.

        • Only works for MySony logins.
Not SonyX or any other logins.

        • Received my two invoices for both the $9.95 order and $1.95 order today and notification that it has shipped!

        • Me too:D

    • i got my sony camera replaced (under warranty) the other day and it had this $30 voucher :) i wasn't sure what i was going to use it for but at $69 this deal is even more tempting

    • Certainly included with this camera purchased during OZ day SALE.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/131361

    • Wow, thanks for the heads up, now I am interested! Even happier I got the s3000 now!

    • Did you end up paying $81.95 for this? Strangely, it's $99 with free deliver for Sony members, then if you enter the coupon code you save $30 but they charge you for shipping again at $12.95. Anyone else have this issue?

      • Yeap, same here, apparently the e-coupon is not valid with any other offer, which in this case the blu-ray player is marked end of line offer, so either you get free shipping or e-coupon whichever is greater.

        • The free shipping is actually related to being a member, and I would debate whether that is and 'offer' as such, and no where could I see T's and C's (albeit I so was buggered), so I have lodged a case with them, will let you knew what how it goes

        • Here's what I got today: (Looking good so far)

    • Bummer, mine didn't have a card in it, although I got it in late October, so maybe didn't qualify. I see some people saying theirs worked more than once, so if anyone would be so kind as to share theirs with me (by PM) I'd be very grateful!

      • more than once means can be twice or hundred times. Imagine if Sony is kind enough to giveaway $300 credit from one single e-coupon. if there are at least 1000 e-coupon produced before xmas, you do the math.

  • I'm pretty sure I bought this exact model for $89 at JB HI-FI last month, would need verifying that it is indeed this model, but I'm fairly sure it is.

    EDIT:
No sorry I think I bought this model (no 3D) http://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-lcd-led-plasma/media-players/son…
They have the OP's model for $149: http://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-lcd-led-plasma/media-players/son…

    • All of the current range of Sony Blu-Ray players have a similar design, so you'd have to double check the model number to be sure. :)

EDIT: Commented before I noticed timdozer's EDIT. :)

  • Region unlocked?

    • Not for Blu.

    • If you want to import Blu-rays, I'd just stick with UK releases from Amazon.co.uk. The UK is the same Blu-Ray region as us, and lots of the UK releases are region free anyway.

The US prices tend to me more expensive anyway, especially considering VAT gets removed from the UK price.

      • Does a region locked player play a region free BD disc?
        Sorry if that's a silly question…

        • Yeah it does.

    • Most players are free for DVD either with a code or out of the box. I believe Sony Australian models are OOTB.

Mod chip for region free Blu will cost you 50 bucks.

      • I think you should be be able to unlock the region using AllforOne URC remote.

    • Apparently this hack makes the 5100 region-free, but only for the DVD functionality it seems.

  • I'm thinking of replacing my old Sony BDP-S590 with this one. Is it worth to upgrade?

  • I wonder if there's any unlock code for this one

  • +1

Annoying thing is it prob has cinavia enabled.

    • Everything is cinavia infected now - they made it a requirement of the licence to produce a blu-ray player (patents, etc.)

If you want to bypass this, you need something that's not a blu-ray player.

      • I have a s390, but I didn't think it was Cinavia infected, mind you I have played a total of one disc in it over the year 6 months it's been in use.

  • Bought one. Cant go wrong for $99.00. Have a Soniq one from JBHiFi a few years back, it does not play 3D movies, so that will go in storage.

Looking forward to the purchase. Reviews appear to be positive, so worth a shot from the officail website.

  • The estimated delivery date is: 14-Feb-14

    Yeahh!!

    • Yeeeeeeah!!! Need to sign on delivery though!!

      • Now I just need a 3D TV!

  • Does it have Netflix or can you add it?

    • +1

I would avoid it for Netflix. Sony has a weird system that bypasses DNS and you need to use a VPN for newer models. I for one cannot figure out how to connect the VPN directly to the router without using a hacked firmware.

      • Any link to the best hacked firmware?

      • +1

I'm pretty sure your router should make the tunnel without any involvement of the end devices. If it's setup right they would be none the wiser.

  • Does any one know if this can output audio via HDMI and coaxial simultaneously eg like the ps3?

The manual sorta suggests it (see [PCM] setting):

    [Digital Audio Output]
    [Auto]: Normally select this. Outputs
audio signals according to the status of
    the connected devices.
[PCM]: Outputs PCM signals from the
    DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL)/HDMI
    OUT jack.

  • doh ! site down for maintenance!

    • Is working for me, too bad I dont want to get it lol.

      • +3

        God works in mysterious ways!

  • I remember when $99 budget Blu-Ray players were rumoured and everyone was thinking that was insane…

  • No TOSLINK. My old Onkyo receiver needs it. Good price anyway.

  • +2

Done and done! Can't believe it just got an SACD compatible blu-ray player for $99!

  • Bought this one before. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/116047. Is this one any better?

  • Is this better than the PS3 in terms of the sound/image quality?

  • this bluray player is 300 bucks on ebay… http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-BDP-S5100-BLU-RAY-DVD-SACD-p…

edit: ok that one is a multi region modded one.

  • Does anyone know if Cinavia affects playback of ripped TV series/mkv movies played off a USB input for example?

    • If it gets to play with the audio, and it's a blu ray player, then it will give you grief. This is true of all new blu ray players.

Get whatever blu ray player you want, then a media player for anything it might complain at (eg get a RaspPi).

      • +1

Unless you get the Laser 10803D. You can get it online, or try BigW. It is region free for DVD and Blu Rays, plays almost anything you throw at it except iso files AFAIK. Currently comes with a month of free Quickflix.

        • I have one of the Laser region free players which I assume it is the same model you mention. I find the dvd/blu spinning is very loud and really annoying. I'm going to get one of these Sony players and keep the laser for the rare time I'll need to play something other than region B blurays.

  • Bought with voucher, $81.95

Already own a Sony 3D Blu Ray player which I bought for $75.

    • What voucher did you use ?

      • Sorry I meant the card

        • Ok so I guess I'm not the only one who is stuck paying shipping when it says 'free shipping for member'.

        • no you are not alone

  • Been looking for something to replace my ridiculously slow and buggy Samsung blu ray player, thanks

    • Damn, just got it and it's region locked for DVD's which my previous blu ray player wasn't, thanks for nothing Sony!

  • Can you plug a 2.5 USB hard drive in to this and play back MKV movies.
