Does it play normal bluray region free ?

    • I dont think any bluray player is region free by default. Though I've heard of custom firmwares.

      • +1

There are bluray players you can switch the region on without custom firmwares, so I don't know why I got a neg.

      • There were a few region-free Blu-Ray players (or more correctly, players which can be reset to play Blu-Rays from a different region an unlimited number of times) on the market in years gone by, but as of 2013, they are extremely uncommon.

The Oppo brand players were regarded as some of the best but they are incredibly hard to find now. Toshiba and budget brand Laser also made some, but they are out of production.

Get the Toshiba bdx3200ky from Harvey Norman - They're $88 at my local (Marion SA) with about 20 on stock on the shelf.

No custom firmware required, just enter a code on the remote and switch. We do this from time to time with our Disney UK discs.

I own this and agree. Plays anything disc based I throw at it, whether it be 3D/BD/DVD. No real 'smart' features, which is a plus for me. Even had a Ethernet HDMI cable bundled.

        • Er, well considering this is a 3D bluray player, I should certainly hope it would play any DVD or 3D BD you threw at it.

        • +1

I meant regardless of region, disc man. date (different codecs) etc.

    • No.

However all my other Sony Blu-ray players (S370,S780) play DVD region free.

Can it do bitstream to AV Receiver?

  • I think its a runout model.

Its Been Discontinued and Archived on the sony website http://www.sony.com.au/product/bdp-s580

2011 model, good price though for their then top-of-the-line.

The equivalent in a 2013 is on special at DSE for $158.

    Don't need 3D ($119) or 3D, WiFi or DLNA ($87).

I'll just mention my experience with this unit briefly. It's a good little unit for the most part (and at $70 I might get a replacement). Mine started in the lounge room and was then moved to the my bedroom and has been used nightly for a good 16 months, however it's not without issues.

During its warranty period I had problems with it crashing at times (like if I was streaming from my NAS and decided that I'd put in a bluray). I took it back once but because it was intermittent I got fobbed off. Just over 12 months after having it, the real problems began and the unit now will only work once a week at best. It has some issue producing the HDMI signal.

I may have got a dud but, at $70, it's not a bad 'disposable' player (even though the $60 LG DVD player I bought 7 years ago is still trucking).

    Just my 2c

Buying a Bluray player today is like building a FTTN NBN. What's the point?

    • +1

Works well for catch up tv over wifi. (and you tube)

Can't think of many other options that will add this feature to a non "smart tv" for under $70.

  • Dam cheap for a 3d player, but pointless if you don't have a 3d TV! Doh!

    • -2

Also pointless for 3D titles are so expensive over 2D.

  • +2

personally, I would rather buy a cheap PS3 to use as a bluray player. I got mine for $150 a while ago (skylanders pack)

      Can that played 3D?

      • +3

most certainly my friend (firmware update was released about 3 years ago)

    • Plus you get wifi.

      • bdps390 has wifi :)

  • So this will do YouTube, iView and DLNA?

What is better in the new model?

  • Can someone tell me what size External Hard Drive does this player support?

I have a Sony Blu-Ray player like this player but its not 3D and its none Wifi but it looks the same but When I plug in my WD Portable 750GB Hard Disk to the front USB, the player detects the HD, but lists the error message that "the USB device connected to this unit's front panel is not supported."

I can still go into meno and play the movies on the Hard Drive but ever time I turn the unit on I get this error message.

    Anyone?

    • Being a sony it will only support FAT32 formatting. NTFS will not be supported (Sony don't want to pay royalites to MS)

  • Can anyone tell me if this unit has access to the 'Opera TV Store', particularly NHK World TV?

  • Thanks. Well spotted!

Bargain! Just bought two - one for the two main TVs in the house … been looking for a semi-decent Bluray player for a while, so hopefully this will do nicely. Thanks WNK.

  • Thanks, bought one! Been waiting for a good deal on a Sony Blu-Ray player for a couple of years now. Told myself would only pull the trigger when price drops to about $90 for one with wifi. Now I just need to wait for a deal for a Sony LED TV to replace my rear projector.

  • Currently unavailable online and in store.

  • Sold out…damn missed in checkout :(

    • Darn me too. Just entered my CC details.

  • Wow, that was lucky, I got one a few minutes ago. Glad I did not wait any longer for my wife to send me the details of her Wish gift card and decided the extra warranty when purchasing on credit makes up for those 5%…

  • To anyone who's big boss has told him to get rid of the BD Player, PM me, I'll be more than happy to help you out and buy it.

Last firmware update was in 2012, no thanks.

    • How is that a problem?
After a while they should have fixed all the serious bugs and stopped mucking with it.
Has one of the on-line service clients broken since then?

  • I have had a 3d tv for over 1 year and didn't have a 3d/bluray player. Got one, thx op!

  • Awesome deal. Will make for a nice upgrade for my non-3D, non-wifi 2010-model S370, which I paid $150 for 2 years ago :( Plus, I consider these models superior to the newer Sony models as they still have component outputs for older TVs which the new models lack, and they're wider as well stacking more nicely with other hifi equipment.

  • FYI, if you still want one of these it's worth checking your local BigW for stock. I was at Kawana today and they still had a few in boxes and one on display for $75.

    • Thanks pauliau just got one at Kawana, there is one left…

  • +1

There were at least 2 units left in Doncaster (Melbourne) BigW.

  • Got mine, and pleased so far.
The user interface is OK, and iView works.
Did notice quite jerky movement on panning from an mkv (compared to playing on HTPC), but blu-ray is smooth.

But a number of mp4/mkv files will not play, mainly hi-def ones.
Has anyone done a firmware update? the network update does not work for me.

Firmware R.0600 is available on the Sony website, but I have read warnings about Cinavia DRM "infection".
Anyone know if that version is clean? (later versions in US and UK have Cinavia, which denies fair use rights, but does little to stop piracy.)

  • Just got this unit, seems very slow when loading blurays. Much slower than my older BDP-S370. Any ideas? I have updated the firmware to the latest version.

    • Seems to be the Wi-Fi. If I turn it off it's very fast.

    • I have updated the firmware to the latest version.

Did you do a network update? R.0600 ?
      Any mention of Cinavia?

      • Mine wouldn't network update. I had to write the firmware onto a CD. Anyone else experience this?

        • Yes, as I said. I suspect the server is no longer operating.
Note though that it needs ethernet, not wifi.

        • Yeah I had it hooked up with an Ethernet cable.

  • The player was dispatched over a week ago but I only just recieved mine yesterday. It's a giant upgrade for me as I was still using one of those DVD/VHS combo players up until now so I am very happy with the purchase. Wifi took about 5 minutes to set up, but once setup I was able to watch YouTube and listen to Internet radio right away. I only wish it supported Asian languages though. Haven't had a chance to try playing a DVD or BluRay yet, will report back.
