  • Could it look much more like the Global Ikasu set, even the same 6 knives. If only there was a chance it was even half as good.

its obviously a copy…… but that in its self dosnt mean they will be fail…..

i already have the global set which i paid ~$300'ish for… but im gonna grab these just to see what they are like. for $30 to my door theres little to be lost.

      • And they match your TV

        • Although I think the TV would cut better

        • +2

actually i have a kogan 55" led 3D……. but that comes with an auto sharpness button…. lucky i actually know how to sharpen a knife properly with a stone tho… so i should be ok.

these knives are made with 3Cr13 steel (which looks like a chinese copy of 420J2 steel). from what i can tell, this steel can have an HRC of 52-55, and is an inexpensive low grade steel with good rust/corrosion resistance but poor edge retention. usually used in low end blades or for non-blade purposes.

global knives are made of "Cromova 18", hardened to 56-58 HRC i believe (already extremely soft for a japanese knife, usually 60+). without being able to confirm exactly what it is (some say it's AUS-118 or AUS-6), it's a higher grade steel for sure (probably similar/equivalent to a 440A or 440B steel).

based on this, i'd hazard a guess that these will perform more like a european knife than the globals (or japanese knives in general). (edit: not in regards to blade geometry…i assume the blade geometry has been copied from the globals)

tl:dr - they will blunt quick (because science).

        • Whoah steel man right here, what the hell. Ummm so what's a good cheap knife steel guy? You sound like you know stuff.

        • +4

aha, nah, i'm definitely no expert on steel/knives…just a mild enthusiast!

in regard to cheap knives, the two i would recommend are Victorinox Fibrox or, believe it or not, Ikea Slitbar or Gynnsam.

the Victorinox use X50CrMoV15 (same as wusthof and other german knives), and is a very highly recommended cheap knife. the standard Ikea Slitbar and Gynnsam also use a Molybdenum Vanadium stainless steel (the exact steel is not specified). (FYI Molybdenum and Vanadium are the "MOV" in the CROMOVA used in global knives as well…although, Cromova 18 is a higher grade.)

if you want to pay a bit more, the Ikea Slitbar chefs knife also comes in a VG10 damascus steel as well. VG10 is a high quality stainless steel (higher grade than all of the above). it costs significantly more than the standard Slitbar, but is a harder steel that should retain its edge better. plus, it looks pretty with the damascus pattern, if you're into that! the Global chef's knife can be had relatively cheaply too, and is actually not a bad knife either, if it fits your hand.

but yeah, it also depends on what sort of knife you want/cutting style you use. a soft/european style knife won't hold its edge as well, but will take more of a beating (better choice if you abuse your knives or use more of a chopping technique). harder/japanese style knives will hold their edge better, but will chip if abused (better choice if you look after your knives, or use more of a cutting/slicing technique).

i personally prefer japanese knives (VG10 or higher grade stainless, or carbon), but also have the Ikea Slitbar and Gynnsam (and bunch of cheapo Kiwi Brand knives…if you want REALLY cheap, get those!) as softer "beater" knives for guests (and me) to abuse!

as i said, i'm no expert (and i know there's knife enthusiasts on here that could give much better advice than i can), but hope that helps.

ps. also: grab an Ikea ceramic hone while you're at it! cheap and does the job!

The Harris scarfe special are better value IMO

so you obviously have both the globals and these and can give us an informed opinion?

oh wait, im sorry… your just mindnumbingly kogan bashing caus its the "in thing"?

      • +5

wow sensitive - don't see any kogan bashing in his post

        • -1

don't see any kogan bashing in his post

maybe you need to start thinking with your brain? claiming something the "same" but 10x's the price is a "better" option? thats like saying that a HJ's whopper is "worth" $50……….. more so the dude dosnt even know the actual quality of the kogan item……..

i call that bashing…… at the very least….

        • Why don't you see the HS specials and decide for yourself ?

        • Why don't you see the HS specials and decide for yourself ?

you mean the ones which are always around $250-300 for globals? the same globals i have in my kitchen? the ones that i paid about that much for a couple of years ago and love?

im not gonna look caus i dont need to waste my time, unless of course your going to tell me you stumbled upon some super special price like $100 a set (for genuine not copies)

i expect these kogans to be about 10x worse than my globals, they are 10 times less expensive and i expect perfect for anyone who i cringe at when they reach for my globals…

  • Does it come with international warranty? Or do you have to send it back to hong kong?

  • too much branding on them

  • +2

Hmmm tempted.. But the only problem is with it being nearly 2 months away, that will be outside of PayPal's dispute window and also would be harder with your credit card as well if Kogan decide to screw you around..

    • PayPal linked with credit card.
      No problem with dispute :)

      • While that gets around the 45 day dispute window with PayPal, I've had to do a chargeback on my credit card before that wasn't authorised and the card cancelled.. The bank picked it up and cancelled my card and I had to submit a form to get the money back.

That took a bit over 2 months :-/
