Canon MX 850 Print Fax Copy Scan CD/DVD Doc Feed Duplex Officeworks $248 plus $100 bonus pack

230

I bought this printer after hard negotiation about 6 months ago for $338 its now down to $248 its a fully featured printer. On Shopbot best price is $288

According to Officeworks and Canon website this purchase also qualifies for a $100 bonus pack of photopaper Printable DVD;s T shirt transfers etc http://www.canon.com.au/pixma/pixmaanything/about.aspx - available unit 31 July 2009

With included software I can put docs into the sheet feeder and leave to scan to pdf's for storage and archiving. It can do double sided scan and printing with two paper trays (I use one for recycled paper and the other for new paper)

Its networkable with ethernet so I can use it with all the networked computers in the house (wireless with a wireless router)

Coupled with a continuous ink feeder which I bought - with Ink from Rihac at www.rihac.com.au at around $150 this is probably the best printer I have ever owned.

  • That is a great printer. I am currently using its older brother, MX530 and installed with high quality ink tanks. It has been serving my boys printing pictures everyday and CD printing for 2+ years and never fails.

    • Hi. Mind if I ask some questions about it. I am most interested in the scan capabilities of this device but most reviews focus on just the printing and faxing. Can you scan straight to the memory card on thisthing. Will it remember your settings after its turned off? eg if you set it up to scan in b&w at a certain dpi will it remember it? Is it ok (reasonably fast and decent) when using the adf on low settings for scanning? One review I came across says that it has bluetooth but I couldnt find that mentioned anywhere else.

      • No bluetooth that I know of. The scanning is setup via the software on your computer so it retains the settings to some degree - ie the info like DPI etc that is determined by the computer.

I say this because when you press the scan button on the printer it looks for all computers on the network and gives you a list to choose from. Then you have to select how you want to scan You have 4 choices Document (Platen) Photo (platen), Document ADF simplex or, document ADF duplex. Then you press the start buttons - 1 if for BW other for color. I haven't ever started the scanning from the computer mainly as the printer is the other side of the room so its easier to activate from the printer where I have just loaded the docs

With duplex it's fast but after an large number of pages it slows down. I haven't been able to determine why. Computer or printer memory?? But stopping scan and restarting from where you left off it goes back to full speed. I have learnt that 20 pages seems to be the right number in duplex before it slows down. But it I set and forget with larger than 20 it does them all, just sometimes slower on the last 20 pages.

        Hope that helps

        • Thanks Ozpete. This printer doesnt sound like its for me then. I want something that can scan straight to the memory card slots so I can use it as a dumb terminal without any pcs on. cheers

  • Not interested in the fax option … but the MP630 model looks great (and also has the $100 bonus pack)
I would also get the Rihac system - done a lot of research and while more expensive that the generics off eBay seems to be much better quality
    Thanks for sharing this deal!

    • I totally agreed. The Rihac system serves us well over 2+ years. It continuous to function even after 3 months of inactivity. Other cheap ink will dry up and render the printer useless without changing the printer head, which costs as much as a new printer.

Anyone can tell us what is the $100 bonus pack ? Can it be exchange for credit for buying a Canon camera ?

    • +2

Its not just fax - its ethernet and document feeder as well both these I found are very valuable. For $20 more personally I think its a better option

As for $100 bonus - I dont believe its exchangable fora camera

There are two bundles to choose from - a Home or an Office bundle. But can find exact deyails

See link http://www.canon.com.au/pixma/pixmaanything/about.aspx for more info

      • Ahh good point
Pity I already ordered the MP630 … oh well!

      • PIXMA Home Bonus Bundle - This bundle includes Canon Photo paper, coloured card, printable DVD's, T-Shirt transfers and more.

PIXMA Office Bonus Bundle - It contains Canon photo paper, business card paper, printable DVDs and more.

I think I'll get the Office bundle … not ever planning on using the t-shirt transfer feature, etc.

  • good find Pete!

  • awesome, just bought one :) just what i need for cd/dvd printing :)

  • how are the printing costs (consumables)?

  • I dislike inkjet and tend to avoid them if possible. They often discount the printer by a big margin but made up from cartridge sale.

    • That is where the Rihac system comes in.

    • And your alternative is?

      Laser printers still require toner..

    • No matter how cheap is the ink or toner, we can always find excuses to complain about it. We should than move off this topic and talk about electronic ink, which will power the bendable LCD, foldable display. This has the inverse logic of the inject, that charges a fortune on the device and consume very little on the long run. Now we don't have to print anymore. We just need to power if up and load the document.

  • I was looking for an affordable printer with Ethernet, and it also has all the features I want.

  • Great post. Just double check. If you put network using the ethernet and connect to your wireless modem router. Can my wireless laptop print to this printer using the wireless connection? or only through the ethernet only. Note: my wireless modem router doesn't have a print server function. Or should i go to whirlpool to check? I thought if you bought one it is easier if you let me know. Thanks.

  • I have an NB6plus4W netcom adsl modem and router and my laptop connects to internet AND printer wirelessly through this. So in effect I would say that it should work through any wireless ethernet router. The printer is connected to a TPlink "switch" which is cable connected to the modem. Hope that explains it well enough

    • Thanks.

  • Just one more thing missing to make it the absolutely perfect all in one: scan direct to e-mail (i.e. without computer).

Regardless, it's already a feature packed and hopefully reliable all in one!

    • Yes that would be nice, but then as its networked, it would really also need an additional feature to be able to handle multiple email accounts - so perfect isnt always perfect……

      • Simple. Increase the phonebook memory to have e-mail addresses, or enter your own on the fly :)

Fuji Xerox colour laser multifunctions all have this feature, as do their copiers. Canon was a dud back a few years ago with only network scanning which required the machine to be switched to "online" and then switched back to "offline" for photocopying/scanning to occur (both cannot be done in the same mode).

  • perfect! I bought one tonight

  • just bought one from clive peters for $180 it is now superseeded as there is an mx860 out for $250

    • I'm looking at buying this printer as well. Which Clive Peters did you buy it from.

      Thanks

  • Trying to decide between this and the new mx860.

The 850 has CD/DVD printing and quoted print and copy speeds are much quicker. The 860 has direct scan to memory card but I think everything else is the same. Officeworks has the 850 at $249 and the 860 at $268.

    Any recommendations?

    • No real recommendations the 860 looks a neater printer BUT there isn't any continuous ink feeder which I bought - with Ink from Rihac, available yet so there is no cheap way to print with the 860 vs that with the 850.

On past experience it takes at least 6 months for cheaper ink solutions to become available for new canon printers. So guess its ongoing price vs beauty.

And personally I like using the DVD/CD print capability

      • Just noticed that the 850 is wired LAN only but I'll probably be using a Homeplug with it anyway as wireless is pretty flakey at the best of times.

I think there is a Rihac for the 860 now. Have to say it looks like quite a complex and potentially messy thing to set up and refill. I'll probably stick to compatibles (4 complete sets for $44 delivered on ebay).

I am still swayed towards the 850 right now.
