  • How does one refurbish a USB flash drive??

  • +1

Dealsdirect has it for $99.95 + 6.95 shipping (brand new)

"…Note: This product comes to you at a great price because it is a parallel import. It comes to you backed by a full 12 month warranty…."

    • It's the exact same flash drive as zed3 is posting and from the same place too. And zed3 is correct in saying that it's a refurbished drive:

Corsair Flash Voyager 64GB USB Flash Drive - Refurbished Model - Blue.

  • Another thing to be wary about these drives is the useless USB connection to the Circuit Board.
My Flash Voyager GT had the USB connector snap off after only 8 months.. VERY disappointing for a so called top of the line product. Sure, the read/write speeds are second to none but without the USB connector read/write speed is useless.
(I tried resoldering, but must've fried something with the heat)

    • Considering that they say on their website

"The Flash Voyager has been shown laundered, baked, frozen, boiled, dropped, and even run over by a SUV in many third party reviews. After all the punishment it receives, the drive continues to work."

Guess while they can survive the above, they just cant survive being plugged in and out - hence the refurbishment. Was yours not warranted for 12 months??

Then again maybe the drives being offered are those that were run over by the SUV

      • That's all well and good, but how many times does the average USB drive undergo any of those scenarios? With the exception perhaps of the washing machine..
Wheras every single USB drive undergoes plugging and unplugging.
The problem is that the rubberised outer provides no structural support to the connector and circuit board solder joins.

It probably was under warrantly, but I suspect they'd have argued it was wear and tear rather than a manufacturing defect, and therefore not covered by warranty.
Wouldn't risk my data with a replacement anyway. I'm back with Sandisk Cruzer Titaniums.

It should be noted that the most recent (last week) Arstechnica USB Drive roundup also mentioned this weak joint issue as a problem with Corsair drives.

  • Who is offering the warranty ? Dealdirect or Corsair ?

What I am worried is the lost of data, not the flash drive in the event of refurbished one fails.

    • It appears Corsair. From DD's website:

"This item is backed by a superb 12 month warranty from the manufacturer."

      • This then raises the issue - the manufacturer supports a parallel import??? That also is very unusual The mystery deepens

  • +1

My guess is there was a manufacturing fault or a fault in the design, or perhaps something simple like a lanyard cord was left out of the packaging. 'Refurbished' probably means these ones have been checked for faults, but show no sign. There is no way it would be worthwhile repairing a flash drive. A he*l of a gamble to buy at any price I reckon.

    • Couldn't agree more.

But I am not going to give a negative because he is sharing a deal. great work.

  • Price looks too good to be true. Biggest caveat I see is that these drives normally come with 10 year warranty whereas this one comes with 12 months.

  • The refurbished price gets me as well.
But Deals Direct are claiming 2 different things: Refurbished AND/OR Parallel Import.

This is a great saving BUT flash drives will come down in price rather quickly.
At this price, I would rather get a 250GB-320GB 2.5" external USB:
    http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=250gb+2.5%22+ex…

    • Well while they are two different things, it could very well be both refurbished and parallel imported. Having said that, I think DD may have made an error in the description?

Under "features", the first dot point reads "Corsair Flash Voyager 64GB USB Flash Drive - Refurbished Model - Blue." This is the first mention that it is refurbished. The 8gb, 16gb and 32 gb flash voyagers on DD also have this same first dot point in their descriptions.

However the last dot point for the 64gb reads "Note: This product comes to you at a great price because it is a parallel import…" whereas for the 8/16/32gb models it reconfirms it it is refurbished: "Note: this is a refurbished model…"

Maybe someone at DD made an error and copied the description in the first dot point from the other models or maybe this is both refurbished and parallel imported. Either way have put the above scenario to DD and they said they will check with the supplier and let me know if it is an error in their description. Will post response back but don't think I'll get an answer until after the promo price ends :(

  • what the fuckkkkk 64gb :o

  • I recently purchased the same unit from Dealsdirect. And its a fake!

    Beware..

Tried to copy 50GB onto it and all the files are now corrupt. Everything about it matches the description of a fake. From the packaging, no engraved model numbers, dodgy light indicator, no country of orgin, the blue dye comes off when you scratch it with your nail (good indicator!).

Now I'm waiting for a reply from Dealsdirect.

    Pissed off.

  • I pulled the trigger on one of these puppies and got it delivered today. Just about to start testing.

It does not come with the lanyard which raises immediate concern as these babies are supposed to ship with them…..

I note that their is no manufacturer ID or name recorded in the drive when you look at it in Device Manager (XP)

  • Umm $50 bucks says this is a fake too - it doesn't even format!!

  • FAKE. Contacting Deals Direct for a refund. I am surprised that what appears to be a pretty large turnover business would be fooled by fakes like this.

    Reasons its a fake:
    - doesnt come with chain that connects lid to unit
    - appears significantly shorter than a genuine one
    - DOA and will not format
    - no manufacturer ID in Control Panel - Device Manager
    - packed vertically in what appears to be sealed pack, rather than horizontally like original items

  • I bought one as well, you cannot format it in windows xp as the format for FAT32 can only reach 32GB. With Windows Vista and Windows 7 I was able to format it to exFat which is like Fat64. I'm doing some tests with it to confirm the capacity it says is true or not.

Will see if this turns out to be a Fake, Dealsdirect has alot of explaining to do.

  • I've tested it and it is indeed a FAKE. 4GB is it's actual size.
Anyone has successfully gotten a refund from dealsdirect yet?

    • I have chatted to deals direct and they've sent me an RMA.

My stick is in the post now and should be with them on Monday. Some guys on the Corsair forum (www.corsair.com) are saying Deals Direct is recalling all of them and is going to compensate all buyers with an extra gift as well as full refund.

The refund would want to include postage…..

  • No ones going to be the first to vote this down for being fake? I will then.

    • Okay. It's fake.

  • I would have voted neg after discovering they are fake but don't know how to reverse my original vote
