  • Anyone know if this Yamaha 5.1 YHT196 system better than Pioneer 5.1 HTP072?

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/home-theatre-systems/yamaha-5-1-…

    vs

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126637

    • Ask cnet reviews man they can tell you the pros and cons for both:)

      According to this: http://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hometheate…

The receiver cannot decode DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. It can however accept LPCM so assuming your BD player can decode the formats you can still get loseless audio.

It also has only 3 HDMI inputs compared to the standard 4-6 found on lower end models.

      TLDR: Get the Pioneer.

This was $299 last weekend at DSE, you may wish to check with DSE, but the YHT 196 was released a few years back I'm assuming their website info is incorrect, it even states the YHT 296?? in the description.

It should be the YHT-299 which is the current model and is better than the Pioneer system, it has a proper (active) sub and will decode DTS and Dolby True HD, it also has HDMI stand-by which I don't think the Pioneer has.

        • I just called up store yht 299 is not on sale it's 196 that's on sale. The guy said 196 is a newer model than the yht299. But for the price pioneer is better buy.

        • Then it must be the YHT-199 same as the YHT-299 but misses out YPAO sound optimization and USB input, imo still better than the Pioneer. FYI info I have seen the YHT-299 sell for $299 if you are prepared to wait for when it next goes on sale.

196 is an older model check out the http://asia.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hometheater-… IMO call another DSE, the last number 6,7,8,9 designates the model year whereas the first number 1,2,3,4 relates to the model. Check the Yamaha website. FYI active sub is better than passive sub I would go with the Yamaha.

        • I agree. New referring to new model inventory for that perticular store I called. He said they only got this in store 3 months ago. For all i know he could be lying its dicksmith.

        • OK I'm letting go of pioneer. I ordered last week for $249 was about to pick up from store tonight. Im not in a rush.

I reckon they have the YHT-199, the YHT-196 is 2010 model, I doubt thew would still have stock from 2010. Harvey Norman or TGG usually have the YHT-299 on sale a few times a year for $299, if you are not in a rush get it when it next goes on sale, probably boxing day.

      • Nah get the Samsung blu ray home theatre system, prob around $300 now and it sound totally awesome! Best product I've every got.

  • It doesn't seem to be active on the website, but the catalogue fine print says it starts on the 19th ?!?
Eg; The Sony Xperia Z1 4G is still listed at normal price - $747 - WITHOUT the bonus items
Maybe it's in store only, or they haven't updated the website yet…

    • I would say the site isn't updated man just wait a few hours and it will probably change :)

      • Yeah, I thought maybe you had put the wrong start date at first…
But I realised after I magnified and read the fine print that it starts today :-)

  • Z1 at msy is $599 so could probably buy the speaker ball with the diff..

  • Rrp isn't the ozbargain way haha jk.

How goods the speaker ball anyway?

    • They are good, but just don't crank it up too much! They pair easily with NFC enabled on your phone.
even has an analog line-in and roughly would last a day with average use. Charger is standard micro-usb
so definitely designed for Android phones. But can still be used with iPhones (I've tried both).

  • The Z1 should be around $500 mark for it to be a bargain. At this price, you're better off buying from MSY or Kogan. I'd say this is a dick-deal. :)

    • just go to sony centre for a better deal mate ;)

  • Free shipping on a lot of stuff and they ship fast (overnight to Tas).

  • UPDATE: just backed from Sony Centre at Robina QLD, the Z1 is only 657 or 659 sth, in general under 660 plus a free Speaker (like the one from DickSmith) -> better value for those who want to save ;). I would like to take a photo but the guy there so i was so hesitated lol

  • Phone is gone now

  • Sony centre won't go down past 720 in WA haha…this was 2 weeks ago though

  • And I forgot to mention they tried to convince me no one could sell cheaper then them and everyone else was getting stock from Hong Kong (MSY etc..)

  • There's an interesting deal on Page 25 of the catalogue in relation to Norton 360 anti-virus software. The 1-device box has a nett cost of $19 after the cashback and gift card amounts are considered; the 2-device has a nett cost of $29; but the 3-device has a nett cost of minus $1 (which means they pay you a $1 for taking the product). Why wouldn't customers just bypass the 1 and 2 boxes, and buy the 3-device box for nothing, plus take a dollar off them as well? Maybe I'm missing something…
