The price seems good for an 8" tablet with dual core and for people who don't want to spend $170 and up for the quad core ones

Its got 16gb built in instead of 8gb, so that sounds good.

I don't know if it is a good tablet though because I haven't got it, so I cannot say if it is good or crap, I'm just posting the price.

  • A few questions:
    1. Is dual core 1.5ghz a fast cpu for a tablet?
    2. Does this have the cramfs or yaffs file system?
    3. Would 16gb run out quickly?

      3.Would 16gb run out quickly?

Is that a serious question? It's storage, so it never runs out.

You could fill it with files, or you could choose not to.

There is no answer to your question.

      • the 16GB is for apps not storage and could fill quickly if you were to install large games but mostly it would be enough, 32gb in the microSD slot would also be sufficient as storage of pics movies ect

MEDIOCRE quality. would definitely STAY AWAY from these. returned mine from a previous deal

    • same here, returned

    • I returned my last Aldi one as well, lots of issues with it.

  • I'm guessing with the low price they've got to cut corners somewhere, and it's usually the build quality, display and battery life.

  • Yes, it is a serious question.

Anyway, I was asking these questions because I don't want to spend too much on a tablet because of the battery. It is a hassle to change them if the battery needs replacing. Why can't tablet makers just make a battery system like mobile phones, easy to remove and replace. I don't get it, you have to take apart the thing to remove the battery. At least if I stuff it up and break something, it won't be something too expensive if I buy a cheap tablet.

      Planned obselescence is one reason.

If batteries were easy to source, cheap to purchase and user repleaceable then you would probably use your tablet until the day it stopped working, and replace the battery a few times along the way.

Batteries are a consumable part. They degrade over time and when the battery dies you're more likely to toss the tablet and buy a new one.

The other reason I guess is the cost savings, and the design of the tablet itself. Most tablets have a lithium battery that is not 'packaged' like a mobile phone's, they're soldered directly into the board and is a little tricky to replace.
You can however purchase battery parts on Aliexpress for several models but they're not as easy to swap out as mobiles

  • For anyone who hasn't noticed, Aldi has dropped the 3G sim slot on this new one.

    • Hence the price drop

What has Amazon got to do with an Aldi deal? On drugs much??

Aldi own Amazon. Werner Herzog conquered it with a white balloon.

  • This could be perfect for my 7yr old. How does this stack up against the Nextbook that COTD is selling at the moment for $129.95? http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/event/32505/product/nextbook…
Its appears to have similar specs except its only got 8GB storage but does have a 3G slot for a dongle. I would be buying a 32GB memory card to go with it anyway so not too worried bout its storage capacity.
    What do you guys think?

    • On closer inspection i think this Aldi one is what ill go for. This has a dual camera which the other one doesnt so she can take photos to her hearts content. And of course the 60 day money back guarantee is hard to go past. Me thinks the wife will need to line up VERY early for this one!

For my kids I was more inclined to go with an Acer A1-810 as their first tablet which is also 8". Centrecom have currently for $168 (http://www.centrecom.com.au/acer-iconia-a1-810-ntl1csa001-qu…) and Acer have a $29 Cashback promo on this model until May next year so for basically $10 more you get a quad core, 16Gb tablet from a 'name' brand. They also have come up a few times recently for under $100 with cashback (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122267 or http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/123184) so you could see them on special again if you are lucky. They aren't a bad tablet for kids (mine are 7 and 9) and the 8" makes them a good size for watching movies or playing a couple of games. Remember they are only a cheap tablet so don't expect the same as a new Nexus or Samsung Galaxy but you're paying different money too. The comparison I am making is with the Bauhn. Perhaps the benefit from the Aldi model is the 60 day satisfaction warranty if you don't like it.

      • Thanks for that, it looks good and a 5MP camera too, that could be the one!

        • I'm definitely keen for a pre-Christmas Acer A1-810 deal like the previous ones if you're listening Centrecom ;o)
