  • Superb deal. Even better than The Shell Helix at Supercheap Auto.

  • +1

except no car made in the last 10 to 15 yrs uses 20w50

    • exactly!

the oil we all want…. 5w30 or 10w30 is NEVER on sale.

    • Any recommendation for my 2003 Toyota Echo 200,000km, for summer driving?

I think right now I have 10w50 fully synthetic penrite in it.

      Thanks for any advice.

fully synthetic oil does not need a viscosity of 50 to be strong. 30 is more than enough to protect your engine, unless your engine is poorly maintained and have a relatively big gap between the piston and wall.

      • @ Stitchy, what does the manual state?

10w50 sounds very thick/high- you sure even 10w40 isnt an option?

other things to consider are where you are in australia (temp wise), the type of driving you do (long haul drives, or lots of short trips), and how hard you work the engine (do u drive the car hard or carry heavy loads on a regular basis).

all these things factor in to oil choice, but its got to start from the owners manual first. they'll give you a bracket to pick from and you decide from there where you want the most protection (cold protection because the car never gets to operating temp vs hot protection because car gets a regular workout that strains the engine).

also, you'll get better fuel economy with a thinner oil. but you never want to go too thin, because then you risk engine failure.

        • Just for a little bit of information, Penrite oil says 'Extra 10' on the bottle. This means a 10-40 oil is a 10-30, so a 10-50 would be closer to a 10-40 :)

        • Manual states a few options (5w-30 up to 20w-50) depending on climate.

autobarn checked their system which recommended 5w-30.
Because my engine has 200k, and because I'm swapping out 10w.. they recommended I go with 10w-30.

I got the gulf-coast brand - 6 litres with a fuel systems cleaner for $30.
They reckoned it wasn't crap oil.
          Will see how it goes.

      More like 20 years?

Repco have GTX 15W40 plus oil filter for $22

my 10 year old Echo owners manual recommends 20w-50, among others.

        ???

        • (update: autobarn highly recommended I don't try 20w-50 despite the manual.. so I didn't)

    • even my 24 year old car doesn't use such thick oil. he grumbles around on 10w40 max

  • Could this be used a cheap protein drink? :O

    • only if you have Chuck Norris specifications i think
