I bet you have National Geographic knocking on your door every time you take a photo.

My Canon EOS 5D Mark III is awesome sauce.

I owned this camera for about 2 weeks before I got rid of it. I read all the awesome reviews too. I seriously could not get it to take a single decent picture though. May have possibly been the operator, sure. Bought a Olympus Pen 2 soon after though and haven't looked back. This is a good price for the Sony however so worth posting. I paid $380 and that was after haggling to the death.

    • Totally agree - I had similar experience

      • I have the previous model of this camera, and it is hard to take a bad pic :p
Everybody raves about the picture quality obtained from a compact point and shoot…
I was actually more disappointed with the Olympus pictures. For example, I found (especially in auto) that the Olympus wasn't as good at dealing with huge lighting contrasts and would often blow-out (whiten) the highlights or blacken the shadows. The colour reproduction would also often be affected by harsh lighting.

What would you say are the issues with the Sony's pictures?
(I am trying to work out what might have changed)

  • Oh this one, very popular in Asia. One of my acquaintances had this and I had a play with it, if you can afford the EVF, shooting with the big zoom is good fun.

  • It's actually 15% off with an extra $26 the 15% end Sunday

26% off would be very cheap around $300

Nice to have 30x zoom in a smaller cam. Typical small-sensor noise performance (look at ISO 800 and above).

  • I still have this camera reluctantly, I love V8 Super Cars and was told it would be great for taking action shots….
If you like looking a blur images, it's perfect but a waiter walking past in a restaurant is too much for this camera. my iPhone does a better job with movement. It does have a great zoom for a point and shot, but it's cheaper for a reason.

It may still be possible with this cam, with manual settings.

If you are counting on the camera to guess what you want, sometimes it can choose a slow shutter speed. You may have to choose Shutter Priority on the cam, or Manual modes or a Sports mode on the cam to get a sharp shot, provided there is enough light and you aren't zoomed in too much.

Generally shutter speeds of 1/500 or above are required to freeze fast action properly. If they are too dark, only then crank up the ISO.

      See if that helps.

Totally agree, with "sports mode" enabled, but still "automatic", you can take a blur-free picture of a jumbo taking off without any issues, it even "motion tracks" the moving object…

There aren't too many V8's that can outrun a jumbo ;-)

For a passing car, you could also pan with the car using "high-speed shooting" (up to 10 full resolution frames per second) and then just pick the best frames.

  • Got this as JB had the 15% of again last weekend (also finishing on Sunday). After reading and comparing a ton of reviews, finally bought it about 10 minutes before midnight.

Camera is great, love the zoom, though 30x wasn't as far as I thought, 20x to 30x not much of a difference. It does have this Clear Zoom thing which is different to digital zoom per say, not sure what's going on there but it seems pretty good. Clear Zoom in my opinion is like 75% the quality of optical zoom. Unlike digital zoom which is 0% the quality of optical zoom as you could blow it up on your computer and it does the same thing.

Previously owned a HX5V and yes the photos taken by this camera is better by about 25%. The image quality and zoom is creme de la creme for this price range. You can get a minutely better image with the Panasonic LX7 with less zoom and a higher price point. Or you can fork out a 100% increase in the money for a Sony RX100/RX100 II for a 25% increase in image quality on the HX50V. In my opinion, not really worth it unless you pretty much only take close up photos. Anything that falls outside the 3.6x zoom of the RX100's will look better on the HX50V.
If you only view photos on the computer/TV/ make prints no larger than A3, this camera is the one to choose.

Improves on the functionality of the HX5V by 85% and takes a 15% step back in others (EV doesn't work on HHT or HDR??? What's the point of the EV dial???). The pop up flash is freaking awesome though, makes you feel like a pro. 32GB SD card will give you an estimate of 5,005 20MP photos or 159/673 minutes of 1080p 50fps/720p 25fps video.

    • Update: After two weeks of testing it, what I have said above holds very firm for the day time photos.

Indoors or when the flash is needed….this is a very poor camera. Only about 15% of your indoor/flash shots will come out OK. The rest will look very poor. Flash is horrible here, very weak, objects are lit unevenly. Flash shots look blurred a lot of the time. Anything that is ISO 200+ is noticeably very noisy. ISO 400 is the absolute max, anything higher and it will look horrible.

HHT, what I thought was black magic and why I absolutely loved the HX5V as it was the first model that had it. It is horrible in this model. They have made the shots even darker and with no ability to adjust the EV in HHT mode, you'll just have to deal with those pitch black shots. Furthermore, it chooses the same or a higher ISO about 50% of the time!!!!! Especially zoomed in. So now, not only do photos not look much better because the ISO stays the same, the only time where the shots are barely acceptable (because it's very dark but still passable) is outdoors where it's not necessary.

Lastly onto video - video is blurred and unclear on the HX50V as opposed to slightly noisy and crisp on the HX5V.

Once again, all of this is compared with the HX5V which is the 4th model back. Yes, indoor, flash, HHT, video (indoors) - all inferior to the Sony HX5V who's sensor is even smaller (1/2.4 as opposed to 1/2.3).

I'll be taking my HX5V whenever I go out at night or know I will be indoors the whole time.

However, after feeling much regret and looking at the cameras in a much more in depth manner, there's no model that is ideal at the moment. Need to wait for the an RX with 10x zoom and 720p video capabilities.
