  Is this like Acronic True Image which clones a drive? Or is it just some sync software that copies files onto an ext HDD when you plug it in?

    Can't tell if you're serious or not. 8.1 is not a new OS. It's still Windows 8. Everything that works on 8 works on 8.1.

      Well my old Windows 8.0 backup image does not work on 8.1
      Skydrive desktop app does not work on 8.1
      My PCs XPS Miniview hardware no longer works but that was crap.

      8.1 is surprising different from 8.0 and new OSes are THE thing that break disk imaging programs.

        The built in image backup program in 8.0 is not compatible with 8.1.

        So if you create an image in 8.0 then upgrade to 8.1 you cannot use the old image. So if you want to go back to 8.0 you need to reinstall.

        Yes I tried it, no go.

        But I got used to 8.1, dumped Skydrive and now use Google drive

        The built in one is probably crap then.

        Just get this or Acronis free version.
