Top deal! Oh wait - that's us :)

    • Turns out today is COTD's 2 1/2 Birthday! Any hourly sales to celebrate?? You still owe OzB an extra special exclusive deal one day!

  • @QQQ, throw me some more bonus with this deal..I'll vote it the best deal..LOL

  • Very good deal. Warranty looks great value too.

Good deal however .. Just returned my maxtor hard disk for replacement yesterday for the 2nd time. Power keeps going off on the unit this time..

Unfortunately my experience with Maxtor has not been good.

  • Does this require an external power source?

    • On the spec's page, it says it runs on AC power, so yes.

  • @QQQ - CatchOfTheDay: any idea when you guys will be doing a firewire external?

  • +2

Not sure if the words 'reliable' and 'Maxtor' should be used in the same sentence. Tend to have the worst rep of the major HDD co's - yes, we all know seagate now owns them blah blah….

That aside is a nicely priced deal. :-)

yeah, i usually tell myself to stay away from maxtor, but 5yrs warranty… can't argue with that

Not too bad but you can get them or WD's at MSY for $98

    • +1

those happen to be internal ones quoted on staticice and not an external one like this…

hey..can i use this to plug into my ps3??

  • Pay a bit more and get the 640gb WD External (Elements) $122 MSY
Even for temporary storage this thing looks like more trouble than its worth.

  • Just bought one… what can I say I'm a sucker for a bargain :D

  • +1

Good value however do not buy Maxtor. I am having one of this Maxtor Onetouch 4 1TB. It seems OK at the first but after using it for sometime, the power went on and off intermittently, and my iMac can not recognise it sometimes.

Good value but the product is crap… LaCie or Western Digital is better.

Got it from Good Guys for $165 1TB last Dec. Good price though.
Never seen less than that price until now.

  • The Maxtor software is purposefully limited so that on the C drive it will basically only backup the My Documents folder. They say on the box it will back up all your "Documents", but it won't the software explicitly prevents your from backing up your emails or other settings in the "Application Data" folder. You have to use something else to do that.

I've also heard that if the drive crashes, if you put a larger drive in the external enclosure, the firmare on the USB adapter won't let you go larger than the original capacity when you bought it. I haven't tried this myself, but I'd believe it given that I know how cunning they have been with the software side of things.

So even though I've found the drive reliable, it's limited in what they will let you do.
