  • Don't know why I bought a 32GB white… I guess I can use my SGS3 as a media only device :)

  • Woohoo, have been waiting for this for weeks. :)

  • +45

This is not a bargain RRP.

Since when did ozbargain become an advertising forum?

    • +19

I think the boss is an android fan. I agree this is standard pricing. There is no bargain here, just an advertisement for google products.

    • +2

Since when does it have to relate to an RRP?? Its a bargain site, that doesn't mean it needs to relate to sales on RRP. As far as I'm concerned its a good deal. $418 including shipping for a leading Android device as opposed, for example, to an arguably inferior $550+ samsung S4 on kogan or a iphone 5s for $700+(?). Why is that not a bargain?

The post is simply informing people here to what someone considers a good deal.

      • +16

Where is the saving? The $179 HTC prepaid phone deal was removed the other day because it was the normal selling price for that phone. The same applies here. It's a matter of consistency. The same rules should be applied to all deals.

        • +13

Why must there be a literal "saving"? This site is called OzBargain. "Bargain" Does not mean "saving" or "discount" it technically means to arrange for a transaction between two parties (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/bargain). Google is arranging a pretty good "bargain" by offering a device for what is thought to be a loss on their part to get a very competitively priced phone on the market to support their ecosystem.

Regardless, I already said the "saving" is in the fact that the phone is arguably cheaper (and better?) than a S4 which costs $550+ from kogan, or a iphone 5s which is currently $739 on apple store. Ergo, it is a good deal and i feel the OP is doing the right thing by bringing the "bargain" to our attention

Edit: You just updated your comment to explain your comment. I agree there should be a consistancy, but really. even good deals shouldn't be removed. their own site is called OZBargain. not, "OZSavings" or "OZDiscounts" but i'm just being facetious ;)

        • +5

Yes but that definition is subjective, one could argue the iPhone is a bargain given the iOS experience is unmatched.

Anyway, the purpose of OzBargain is to inform people about limited time discounts/limited opportunities to save money.

Since this is standard pricing it does not qualify.

        • +6

I agree with you this phone represents excellent value. The point I was trying to stress was that many similar deals have been removed because they were simply listed at the RRP, and were not considered a bargain in the sense that there was not a significant saving to be made over the normal price.

        • +1

Yep fair enough, when i replied it was before you'd edited your comment. You originally just had "Where is the saving?" without justification. If they already have a precedence then fair enough I see what ya mean, i was unaware.

However, I still think the site should be about great deals whether that is RRP or not… If its cheap in context of the market, its a good deal. I mean google are clearly heavily discounting the phone on release. If google had released the N5 for $750 then immediately discounted it to $418 would it THEN be considered a bargain as per the OzBargain terms? :)

Anyway all good, i guess we'll see what happens with this post.

        • I think when they become this popular they just get left as is.

        • +1

I think the mods will put this in the forums after everyone has seen it. I don't think it's a bargain but I'm glad it's on the front page so people are aware the Nexus 5 is out. I'm pretty sure the mods will move it to the forums once this dies down a bit.

        • +1

          @unity1

The $179 HTC prepaid phone deal was removed the other day because it was the normal selling price for that phone.

Do you have a reference for that? The only $179 HTC phone has been selling recently is the Telstra HTC Desire 300 which has never been removed. You also mentioned "many similar deals have been removed because they were simply listed at the RRP". Can you give some examples?

        • iOS experience is unmatched.. what?

I'd say this qualifies as a worthy post because

          a) ~$400 for a top of the line phone is a bargain, for example if the S4 was dropped to $400 there would be a frenzy.

          b) If last year is anything to go by, this may be a limited offer of sorts. Last year all the Nexus 4's sold out within a day and it was 3 months or so before they came back.

        • Sorry boss, I seemed to have got myself a little confused. That is exactly the deal I was referring to. I honestly thought it got deleted. My bad.

          Look at the deleted deals on the following pages http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=66 , http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=161 , http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=224 , http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=300 , http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=393

Reasons given: advertising, normal price, why this is a bargain. There could be more but it's doing my head in trying to go back into past deals. Some of them also get removed at the request of the OP.

    • -6

I fully agree with @drmix. RRP is not bargain.

      • how about ipad air, it is RRP too apple fanboi

      • +2

It is a good discussion about the semantics of different people's definitions of 'bargain'.

I found someone's comment above quite convincing on this RRP point. If we accepted the must-be-less-than-RRP rationale then we'd support XYZ-Dodgy-Brothers making a product for $200, setting a false/inflated RRP of $600 and then letting everyone sell it for the 'bargain' price of $299.

So a must-be-less-than-RRP policy would discourage the more honest usage of 'RRP' demonstrated here by Google.

In fact in rejecting this "must-be-less-than-RRP" rationale I'd go further and state that on its own it is also not sufficient basis to justify a neg!!??

[BTW this rare AUD$1 coin from 2000 is worth about $1,200 so if you could get one for less than $500 that would be a great bargain - whilst its manufacturer's RRP would still only be AUD$1.00!!
        http://www.aussiecoins.com/coins/one%20dollar/2000-one-dolla… ]

      • Don't be ridiculous; only dimwits use solely the RRP to determine what is and is not a bargain.

      • RRP is not a discount, but what's to say it isn't a bargain?

    • -1

its always the freeloaders who are the first to complain

    • +3

Agree, definitely not a bargain, should be moved to forums

    • +3

my first thought when I saw this 'deal'. Its not going to be moved to forums now because its reached the threshold …

    • Since when was an RRP being an extremely good deal a negative thing? We bitch and moan about Australian retail being a massive rip, why can't you recognise and appreciate when a company challenges the ridiculous pricing status quo?

      • The butthurt is strong with the vocal minority in this thread. Ozb has spoken, it's a good deal.

  • Ordered mine :) Been waiting to replace my Galaxy Nexus.

Incase you ordered and got the warning/message saying something like "Play store experiencing high demand, you will receive your confirmation via email" don't worry I received my email probably after 1+ hour but it eventually came. I ordered mine around 8:00am Nov 1st AEST.

  • +1

Thanks OP. An excellent bargain considering better features than the latest Apple iPhone or Samsung S4 which both cost way more than the price of this.

  • According to LifeHacker, the initial batch of 32gb's has sold out:
    http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2013/11/the-32gb-nexus-5-has-al…

    • 32gb blacks are now 2-3weeks wait.
however u can still pick up white version in 1-2 business days

    • May be syndicated content from the US - so doesn't mean stock allocated for Australia has sold out. However, given a number of media reports that has been a sell-out already in the US I think Australian stock probably will sell-out quickly too.

Nice to see my invoice includes tax - even though this appears to be shipping in directly via Fedex from S.E.A. Tax is 1/11th of total price - however I don't know why Google would need to pay Australian GST on the international shipping! [Sadly shipping was double for two phones in the same order.]

  • Camera quality on these also likely to be as poor as #4. Seriously LG just can't get this bit right, so very little confidence for this newest

  • +5

I think theres too much negativity here about this phone..
personally i'm very excited to be able to get one, last time had to wait months cause n4 sold out so quickly.

and $399 for a flagship phone is unheard of.
the n4 wasn't quite flagship and it still sold like hotcakes.
n4 was awesome by the way. although there were issues with battery life, android is such a flexible OS that if you wanted to you can tinker it until the battery life was awesome - by using apps like greenify!!
and having OS updates for android first every single time is awesome too!

  • +3

Want..but just can't justify it when my N4 is perfectly fine

    • +2

Yeah i wouldn't bother going from N4 to N5. I skipped the N4 from my galaxy Nexus which is the gen before N4. I think your at least better off waiting till next gen Nexus because you'll get Android kitkat OS upgrade anyway which will improve upon your N4 anyway

  • +1

Wanted to upgrade, but needed a slightly better camera and expandable memory to win me over.

  • Any ideas as to whether the 4 will be discounted any further at some point?

    • +1

I doubt it would be discounted anymore.

    • +1

It has been reported once N4s are sold out they won't be replenished.

  • +1

is it possible to claim TRS??
do we need to request original invoice?

    • Yes & Yes.

      • So we need to specifically request for one? I wonder how soon delivery arrives.

        • Hmm, I'm going overseas on the 14th of November and was looking to claim on the TRS. Hopefully it comes with a valid tax invoice or they're able to email me a printable one or I might be out of luck :\

        • +1

It took me about 1 week of chasing them up repeatedly via Email to get a tax invoice recently.

        • And was it a Tax Invoice that showed GST team teri?
(I am trying to find out if it is suitable for the TRS refund process)

      • Have you successfully claimed TRS with the receipt KLoNe?
I have read so much conflicting information about this…

Edit: It seems it is not possible to claim back the GST if you read Bargain4U's post further down…

        • And then again further research indicates that it may be possible - LOL

Has anyone had personal experience with successfully claiming the GST back?

      • called up google..
they wont send out a separate invoice and told me to just print out the email…

how did you guys request 1? i'm pretty sure email printout wont work :/

        • it MIGHT work. anyway i didnt have problem with a printed email/invoice for a gopro hero3.

  • -1
    • +1

Ouch - crazy annoying vid. Don't mind the French OS (KLP not KitKat) but I'll have nightmares about that music, the attempts to scroll on non-scrolling screens and the awful long pauses with finger poised over a button whilst deciding whether to click. [Also side buttons don't look right?? - perhaps a prototype??)

  • -1

Aaaaand, 16gb black AU stock have now sold out. I'll sell you one from my order for - one beeeeellion dollars.

  • +2

Bloody great price for the spec and hardware standard - screen quality etc . (ie. excellent) - however I won't contemplate a phone without an SD card slot given my usage habits. Maybe not an issue for many but I'm the kind of user where any amount of storage isn't enough.

Ozbargainers might be interested to know that the US RRP according to El Reg is $349 & $399 for 16GB & 32GB respectively.

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/10/31/google_unwraps_andro…

    • +1

On current exchange rates, US$399 = A$421.68. Plus GST of 10% on that would be A$463.85. Looks like we get a discount of ~A$14.85.

      • I saw a guy on /r/android who quoted 442USD including shipping and tax for a 32Gb, which turns out to be about 463AUD. I'm pretty happy with this - the exchange rate is not as good at the moment yet the prices are only about 10% difference, so it's just GST. Props to Google.

      • +1

Do Google Play actually supply a receipt that shows GST? You would need this to claim it back via the TRS system…
I don't have any personal experience with purchasing through them but I have seen numerous comments in the past that seem to indicate Google doesn't supply suitable receipts - can anyone illuminate?

        • Phone up Google customer service to get them to send you a full GST invoice. You will receive a confirmation with the VAT amount shown if you purchase, but I remember from the Nexus 4 that some people claimed this wasn't sufficient for a TRS claim.

        • Thanks mooribbit
A receipt with VAT would definitely NOT be suitable :-(
Australian TRS give you a GST refund, not a VAT (Which is used in the UK and other regions)…

        • i phoned them up.. but was told they cant send out invoice separately!?

        • Thanks chew_chew, so are you saying:
          (a) They won't send a receipt separate to the phone but you will still get a TRS suitable receipt (Tax Receipt) with the phone delivery?
          OR
          (b) They won't send a TRS suitable receipt (Tax Receipt) period (ie NOT separately and NOT with delivery)?

        • +3

Google have specific Tax Invoices that they send out via e-mail. The receipt you get delivered with the phone is insufficient for TRS. You need to contact Google to request it the Tax Invoice. It took me 11 e-mails to get it finally, they don't seem to understand what it is you need. On the proper Tax Invoice it will say:

          Purchased From:
          Google Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd.
          8 Marina View, Asia Square 1 #3001 018960
          Singapore
          ABN Registration No: 54 341 015 381

        • Thanks Bargain4U
And did you successfully use this for a TRS refund?
I haven't yet seen anyone personally confirm that they were able to claim :-(
(It concerns me that it is listed as a Singapore company even though it has an ABN)

I had similar issues with Optus online recently - they sold me a phone outright (on their website) and then kept sending me a "Proof of Purchase" instead of a "Tax Invoice".
Some of the Optus people I spoke to even tried to claim Optus don't sell phones outright, and most of them didn't seem to know what a Tax Invoice was…

        • +3

Called Customs and Border Protection and it was officially confirmed:

"You cannot claim TRS refund(s) for goods purchased over the Internet and imported into Australia"

I was told the whole idea of the TRS is to support Australian businesses.

        • Dang :(

        • Thanks Bargain4U

I was going to do that myself later (not possible currently - at work).

So I guess all the arguments about Australia's price being similar to the USA because of GST are largely invalid because the so called "GST difference" is not claimable ?!?

I assume Google just pockets the extra? :p

          Or maybe not ?!?!?!? Hehehe

        • +2

If you make another call to them, I am certain that you will get a different answer.

        • +1

"You cannot claim TRS refund(s) for goods purchased over the Internet and imported into Australia"

I'm pretty sure that quote is implying that since the product was imported, that no GST had been paid.

        • +1

I agree PissLUR, I definitely had that experience with the Australian division of Optus whilst trying to chase down a Tax Invoice…

Every call resulted in new, different and/or conflicting information :p

But if the Invoice lists Google as having a Singapore address (as per Bargain4U's post above) it seems likely the TRS refund won't be possible :-(

        • +3

And the saga continues… I contacted the Tourist Refund Office headquarters instead of the Customs Information and Support Centre. And they state that it is claimable, they have approved Google purchases for a refund previously but no guarantees. If a claim is denied there is an appeal and review process. Seems to me, a grey area but as long as there is an ABN number and GST charged on the Tax Invoice it's claimable.

        • Wow, you really have researched this well !!!

As you say, it seems a little grey, but the Tax Invoice with ABN and GST charged should mean it is possible :-)

I am still yet to see a post from someone that has personally managed to get the GST back - hehehe

        • so i guess we will have to email google (11 times?) and request for the invoice?

@oz-dave: the support person on the phone said its not possible for google to send out physical tax invoice along with the phone, or even separately.. which i doubt is an accurate statement.

        • +1

you dont need a physical tax invoice.

          people got it via email.

        • Thanks chew_chew

But as per your reply and above, it seems it might be possible to get a Tax Invoice (but not physical) if you email 11 times :p

And as per PissLUR and my experiences with others, you will probably get a different answer next time you phone ;-)

Based on all these responses you can see why I was finding it hard to get a definitive answer about TRS refunds - hehehe

        • +1

          Just me being a nomad/moron it's a GST invoice…
It reads: Total: $418.95 (Includes GST of $38.09)

        • Thanks Bargain4U , I'll have to do this for claiming on my personal Tax ;)

        • I'm up to 3 emails. Hoping to smash the 11 email record (on the low side)!! Just missing their ABN & the words "tax invoice" stated prominently on the ones they keep sending me…

        • +5

If anyone is still reading this, this is what the invoice should look like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7u7hepag758u34d/n5-tax-invoice.png

Goal achieved after just 3 emails :D

        • What's their email address to request a tax invoice?

        • @Jayau

The GST calculation doesnt seem right. There shouldnt be any gst charge for shipping imo.

          449/11 = 40.81
          468.95/11 = 42.63

Just checked my invoice for my N5 16GB and its the same calculation as well. GST on the shipping fee.

          Edit:
Sorry just googled on this topic, and seems correct. GST also applies for shipping fee.

        • Would this be good for TRS then?

        • I initially submitted a support request on their wallet page (click "Contact Us" top right): https://support.google.com/wallet/?hl=en

After that all the emails came from [email protected]

Yes, this should be good enough for TRS. But I'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks.

        • Thanks, that is what I had also done.

        • Great, please do report here whether it's qualify the TRS. I might buy another for my next oversea trip.

        • Got my invoice after 1 email. :D GST paid was $38.09 for the 16GB version.

        • -1

I used to place an order with tax appeared on it, but then with some reason I cancelled it. Just about 20 mins ago, the new order I placed shown no tax on it!! Then I called Google customer service but obviously they didn't know what happened (or at least they don't want you to know what has changed). Did anyone have the same issue like me? Cos I want to claim TRS when I travelling overseas. Wait for any reply! Urgent!

  • -5

Good phone for a good price
and by the way you should get rid of the negative button so apple fanboys or freeloaders can't complain

    • -7

Lets list all new products at their RRP on this site. It will be sweet.

      • +2

The Apple fanbois would be in heaven, telling us how Apple products are amazing bargains even at full Apple RRP.

    • If someone had posted the new ipad airs selling at RRP on the Apple website it would get the same response I have given here. Infact, it would actually get a neg since Big W has a better deal.

      • +2

Infact, it would actually get a neg since Big W has a better deal.

Feel free to neg this deal if BigW or anywhere else has a better deal.

        • There is no reason to neg this deal. The only reason I didn't vote positive is because I don't consider RRP a bargain.

        • What if this phone was released at RRP of $50?

        • +1

Well then that's its normal price. Once the price starts dropping below $50 then you can start commenting on whether that constitues a bargain or not.
