At $179 for HTC with dual core seem like a deal.
- HTC BlinkFeed
- Dual Core 1GHz Processor
- 4.3" WVGA display
- 512MB RAM
- 5MP Camera with VGA Front Facing camera
- Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense
At $179 for HTC with dual core seem like a deal.
similar spec chinese phones can be had around 70$ with questionable quality
+1 for the fantastic description…
You didn't +1.
If only this had 1gb ram :'(
Yeah. My original Desire had that much RAM and it struggle. Would not get anything less than 1GB of RAM these days.
For the price, you might as well get a Chinese phone. You would has the same chance of getting an update.
caveat emptor - I'm still cranky that HTC/Telstra dropped the HTC Velocity 4G from any kind of upgrade path. Its still on ICS and the specs are better than this, but this gets JB…
There's a fair amount of xda development if you're game + have some spare time + don't care about/have warranty =)
for the general forum (velocity 4G sold as Raider/Vivid in overseas markets - same phone)

you WILL lose all data though, so make sure know how to back everything up before even attempting any of this.
If absolutely nothing i said made any sense to you, then either
1) continue to reluctantly use ICS
2) brief yourself at http://lifehacker.com/5789397/the-always-up+to+date-guide-to… and see if it's at all worth the hassle! (this site won't tell you how to do anything, but it's a good place to start for someone with zero knowledge of rooting etc)
yeah, I've rooted my fair share of phones, but trying to go legit - hence have ditched android and it's ridiculous fragmentation…
For what? Windows mobile or iOS and their locked down OS? ICS isn't that bad anyway
at least you (mostly) don't have to root WP8 or iOS to get software updates inside the manufacturers warranty period? If the PC vendors made us do that we would be in uproar…
You have to install 200mb of software to any computer to gain interface with WP on a windows OS… :-( pain.
What?
I assume you mean software to get access to the phone storage? If so, then no, you don't.
That is the negative side if you don't buy a Nexus.
This is probably the main problem with android. But most things do not require the latest OS.
hey, does anyone know if this supports video out? I'm interested in mirroring my display to the tv. Google searches haven't really been all that helpful
According to GSMArc, no.
Congrats on the first comment, too :P
haha thanks, on both counts =p
This phone is pretty basic, it does not do HDMI nor MHL.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi Yes
Wi-Fi standards supported WiFi B, WiFi G, WiFi N
GPS Yes
Bluetooth Yes, v 4.00
NFC No
Infrared No
DLNA No
Wi-Fi Direct No
MHL Out No
HDMI No
Headphones 3.5mm
FM No
USB Micro-USB
ah bummer. Saves me $179 though I suppose. Thanks!
It might actually though, it has 4.2 and from then onwards should by default support Wifi Direct and therefore Miracast (wirelessly mirroring your device's screen to a Miracast receiver). My chinese phone on 4.2.1 supports it, so you'd expect the HTC to as well.
I'm sure someone will enlighten me why a Galaxy S2 around the same price wouldn't be a significantly better phone.
Especially if you're willing to root and ROM.
Paying ~50% extra isn't really "around the same price" for people looking for a phone in this range I'd imagine…
Not to mention this is Aussie stock, 2 yr warranty is standard these days, barman will unlock it for 5 bucks most likely, should be at least one more update on top of what it ships with, and everyone prefers HTC build quality (except I haven't held this device)
Android 4.1 to 4.2 isn't a noticeable change. They should at least update it to 4.4.
@Jackson…
barman will unlock it for 5 bucks
…or for those that don't drink at Jacksons pub, BAGMAN on ozb will do it for the same price. ;)
Bloody auticorrevt! Never works when you need it to and always works when you don't :/
Comparing a used phone with no warranty with a new one?
I'm comparing value via longevity and usefulness of the devices. I'd personally take a risk on a second hand S2 over this any day. Each to their own. I hardly negged the deal.
Anyone know whats involved in unlocking it from Telstra?
This or the Telstra Frontier @ $119-$129?
This is standard pricing http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-desire-300-coming-telstra-… . This is not a bargain.
Agreed. No deal here, selling at RRP.
Good price for HTC with standard specifications
But, where is the deal?

With those specs, it's hardly worth $50. It seems it doesn't even have a camera flash.
Specs are pretty much the same as a $99 Huawei Y300 which is where this should be priced. It's too close to $199 5" Kogan Agora MkII HD 720p Quad-core or the $250 Nexus 4 which are both significantly better than this.
Price in title plz :) *and store
