        • The Nando's I went to was not included, but I did buy a $26 bottle of bourbon from a place that was.
          One place to go.

        • NetPlus. $19 16gb micro SD and $3 photo paper. They normally charge 2.3% for all credit card payments, but they didn't charge me anything.

I just called Chili house at forest road Hurstville and been told we don't accept Amex….

  • +1

The merchant list is old, so some places would have dropped Amex or switched owners since, so best to ask before buying to double check, also some places still have an Amex merchant account but don't use it, so Amex will still have them as active. Most places will be correct but not all.

    • I experienced this first hand, went for a dinner in one of the listed place, and was told no amex when paying the bill.

    • Pastacup Melville is not taking AMEX

  • The Amex merchant fee isn't that much higher IMO.

The average merchant service fee charged by American Express Australia Ltd for the period 1 July 2013 to 30 September 2013 was 1.78%.

The average merchant service fee charged by Visa for the period 1 July 2013 to 30 September 2013 was 0.81%.

The average merchant service fee charged by EFTPOS for the period 1 July 2013 to 30 September 2013 16.38 cents per transaction.

There is also the usual marketing spill that American Express cardholders have a higher average income than others and will therefore spend more, look to return to businesses that accept Amex etc etc.

    • +1

Sooooo… they are over twice as high.

      Yeah, not "that much higher".

    • +1

But given how much of the total would be charged to giant merchants like supermarkets, petrol stations and department stores - who would have negotiated much lower rates - how much is the rate for the average small business?

  • Bought Chicken & Chips today >$20, but had to pay 3% surcharge (which I agreed to, but I will complain to Amex after I get my credits!)

  • Amex can be good for retailers. Yes I'm not a retailer and have no first hand experience, but this sounds right to me. But I can see that the businesses that become big are the businesses that spend on marketing, promotions, printing. Think small be small , think big pay fees be big.

If you're near to Parramatta, this can be a good deal ( http://www.wireless1.com.au/BELKIN-RETRATABLE-MOUSE-USB.html )

I went to their store (Shop 3080, Westfield Parramatta). The price were $29.95 in store but when I mentioned the link they agreed to reduce to $10 :) . I bought 2. They charged $1 for Amex but I didn't mind. Anyway $11 for 2 is too good for me.

Got the notification/confirmation mail from Amex about 2 minutes after the purchase. Using my new mouse right know.

Registered both mine and the wife's card.

Found heaps of places around us in inner Melbourne, including places we frequent.

Went for dinner to local Chinese and got my email confirmation about 30 min after paying.

    Very happy!!!!

    • Which place is this if you don't mind sharing?

I went to De Clieu, which was on the list - but they didn't even accept Amex >:(

  • if you only spend under 5 places i.e one $20 purchase only made would i still qualify?

can some one confirm that you dont have to make a total 5 $20+ purchases at different stores to get the $10 credits?

    • +1

Yes that is fine, it's $10 per $20 spend up to 5 times.

  • so is transaction splitting eligible?

    • No you only get one credit per store, at up to 5 stores

    • yes, it worked for two card holders

      • Yeah two card holders worked, I did it 2 days ago, $72 purchase, $36 on my card and $36 on my wifes card. You can't split it on your own cards though of course as mentioned.

  • Has everyone been getting an email after their purchase? I didn't receive an email confirmation

    • +3

I used this offer 3 times last night at 3 separate locations.
The emails came through to my gmail about 15mins after each transaction was completed.

    • spam folder?

      • no not in spam

    • My card and my wife card are registered for it. She's received the emails but I haven't. However, I bought from the same chemist as her, so perhaps it's different store per amex account and not per card.

  • I went to two small shops which is the third shop of the first page in a suburb on amex website, but unfortunately amex can not be used in those shops, at last I have to pay by my visa card.

Really do not understand why there are shops on amex website, but the shops do not accept amex!

So be careful, just ask if can use amex before buy something!

I just used this at the pub at work and no surcharge. Instantly got an email saying I have $40 more to use from AMEX.

    • You have a pub at work!?!?

      • +1

        He works at a pub?

  • some stores listed are no longer there or dont accept amex, best to call first and confirm.
there are a ton of shops to choose from so you wont have any issues finding another if one doesnt work.

  • This is the email I received shortly after using the card.

LOOK FORWARD TO A LITTLE SOMETHING IN YOUR ACCOUNT.

Thanks for using your Registered Card ending in XXXXX to Shop Small.

You can still get 4 more $10 statement credits by continuing to Shop Small in November. You have received $10 so far and can get another $40.

But hurry! Shop Small is only running until the end of November. So support your local businesses now - and add another credit back into your account.

Statement credits may take up to 8 weeks to issue but generally, it should be credited within 5 business days.

    • 5) La Porchetta on Doncaster road for dinner?

  • No amex at Nandos Belmont, WA.

    • Accepted at Tuart Hill WA, but no $10 statement credit.

      • I bought my non discounted nandos anyway. This must be great for AMEX having all these people go into stores asking if they accept them.

      • +1

Mine accepted at Nando's Melb Central, but no $10 email despite listed on the participated merchant list. If no credit for the next 5 days, I suppose I'll have to call up Amex :(

        • Is it listed on the website?

        • Yup, it's listed on Amex shop small website.

        • Likewise for me, had lunch at Melb Central today too - accepted my AMEX but no e-mail from AMEX. Let me know how you go.

        • U guys should meet up! For a date ;)

        • Will post when I hear from them.

        • haha

        • Whats to say we weren't on a date already?

        • Yeah. I went to Mamak in Melbourne this afternoon and I have not received an email as yet. Yesterday at the local fish and chip shop I got it within 15 minutes so I guess my expectations are quite high. :-)

          Regards
          Daniel

        • Just noticed that Mamak had not yet charged my Amex card so I guess that is one reason why I have not received my notification. I just hope that the places I go to on Friday are not tardy

Saving all my receipts just in case.

          (missing from comment above)

      • Just to be clear, Tuart Hill was not on the shop small website.

  • Take a punt… I shopped earlier today at a place not listed but still got the promotion!

Forgot to mention that for those people who find the website pretty bad for searching for places, just link it from your iDevice instead. It is very easy to search for local places via my iPhone. (I assume the same for Droid and W8).

    • Thanks for the list
I went to Home Thai at Sussex Street on Sunday but they said they never accept AMEX.

    • Update: Home Thai and Malacca Straits Broadway do not accept Amex, but I went to Mamak and At Bangkok Thai, both accepted it with no problem. This promo put Amex to real test.

    • I can confirm that mamak chatswood also works

  • Looking for a phone no or email address regarding this deal.

Wanted to give Amex a call / email as one of the merchants listed and accept Amex but haven't received an email regarding $10 refund.

  • Amex accepted & received email at Kazzems Pizza Belmont WA. They have $10 large pizzas on Mondays (and the pizza is awesome).

  • Before you go to the place you intend to spend again check the Amex site again as they may have updated it. We initially saw a pharmacy we could use on the list, but I checked today and it's no longer there. As they are no longer on the list, I didn't get an email to confirm my purchase.

  • Anyone with luck with any of the restaurants in inner city Melbourne?

  • I completed two transactions at Punchbowl NSW - Butcher and Pharmacy.

    I received my 2 x $10 credits within 2 days.

  • Has anyone tried Grill'd in Yarraville?

Only the ones at Melbourne Central and Hawthorn were listed… not sure if we should take a punt there tonight.

    • Did Grill'd in South Melbourne (which was not listed) … needless to say, didn't receive any email ….

  • +3

For those missing emails that confirm the $10 credit for small business purchases, you need to fill out the following form:

    https://www316.americanexpress.com/iFormsSecure/un/iforms.do…

    • That form useless. They will respond to you many many days later and tell you to call them instead. Better to just call them straight.

Also those who did not receive an email, check whether the place you bought from is still listed. I didn't get an email then I wondered why. Went back and check and that retailer is no longer on their list. Bought from another place listed and this time got the email.

        Response 27/11/2013 07:34 PM

        Dear Mr. *********,

I apologise for the inconvenience caused to you.

I have immediately requested for a credit of $10.00 to your Account since you attempted to make a charge at the listed participating merchant. This credit will appear online within 2-3 working days.

I have also escalated the merchant details to our Shop Small team and we will investigate this further.

If you need assistance in any other way, do let me know.

        Sincerely,

        Saket Raman Shah
        Email Servicing Team
        American Express Digital Services

        • Did you go to a place then amex wasn't accepted or you just never got the $10?

        • I went to a place where American Express was accepted and it shows on the shop small map, but I didn't get the email after my purchase confirming the $10 credit, ie it didn't go through.

  • Bavarian Bier Cafe in Crows Nest isn't listed on the site, but went there on the weekend, used my Amex and got $10 back the following day.

    Site appears to be outdated.

  • Does this apply to supplementary card holders? Provide that they register separately on their website?

  • Himawari in Sunnybank (Brisbane) is on the list but does not actually accept Amex.

    • tell them you ok to pay surcharge

      • Wasn't offered as an option, just said amex not accepted.

  • Did my 5 purchases.

Got the email for 3 of them within minutes, the other 2 never got an email from.

Waiting to hear back from Amex.

I registered two amex cards but it only let me do 5 on both, not 5 on each, probably because I used the same email when registering, didn't think of that.

    • Damn. That was smart of them. My wife and I registered 2 each. I've already done 4 (although still waiting for a confirmation for Mamak (Lonsdale at Melbourne).

Also, watch out for minimum spend limits for Amex. The wife and I just got back from Dumpling King in Box Hill (Melbourne) and the min spend was $50 for Amex and $25 for Visa/MC.

Needless to say we did not plan to eat up tonight so ended up paying cash.

      Annoying!

      Regards
      Daniel

      • +1

If you don't get the email within a few minutes, then it's not going to come at all and you may as well contact Amex straight away (explain you didn't get the email to confirm the purchase which should come instantly, and you understnad that the credit can take a while, you aren't worried about the credit, just the fact you didn't get the email and therefore it didn't go through at all). If you have an Amex issued card you can use the message centre in your account, otherwise try this form I posted earlier: https://www316.americanexpress.com/iFormsSecure/un/iforms.do…

        • Thanks reported it through now and hopefully will get the credit.

With regards to the multiple cards. Is it confirmed that you can only use it 5 times across cards registered to the same email address?

I only ask is that I once registered 5 AmEx cards across two email addresses for another deal (the David Jones Highpoint opening of spend $200 and get $50 back one) and received 5 x $50 back on my 5 x $200 worth of gift cards.

I was planning to grab some fish and chips again at my local and use my other AmEx. Wife not around today for me to use her card. :-(

          Daniel

        • To complete this story, I received a call from AmEx this morning and I explained to her the situation (basically spent >$20, Used registered AmEx, Mamak is a registered store on their site). She asked me for a copy of the receipt and so I sent it to her and now I should be getting a $10 credit.

          4/5 done so far…

          Regards
          Daniel

  • Similar to above posts. Better to double check with the store before hand or look for the sticker as some stores listed on the website actually don't accept Amex. Went to 2 stores today masaka and malacca straits and got rejected when I tried to pay with Amex. Bummer.

    • Yup for the same reason I had to revoke my vote. Would be better if Amex kept an even vaguely accurate list of people who allow amex (i'm sure if they don't get a transaction from them in weeks you can assume it's a company policy to disallow amex). Not always practical to ring up beforehand especially if they are a cafe at lunchtime.

  • +2

I just called up 3 local restaurants on the list and none of them accepted amex. I can't be bothered calling anymore.

    • Decided to persist a bit more today. Worked at Royal India in West Perth. Anyone else in WA want to share where it has worked.

      • Raine Square Jesters in the CBD took amex and I got the credit.

Newsxpress in Raine Square takes amex but not for smokes, lotto or phone cards.

        3 out of 5.

  • Used one of mine last night at Pizza Capers in Spring Hill, Brisbane. Had the email before I got home with the goods, and I only live 5 minutes away…

  • Well I used my first card and second card and the email said I only had 3 left after using each card once. My partner rang them and it said 5 times per person not card although we couldn't find it in the terms.

  • Can this be used at a newsagent for a $20 iTunes card?

    • +1

Yeah as long as they are on the small business list you can buy what you wish

      • Yep it worked, just went to newsagent and bought a $20 itunes card and got the email saying they will credit $10

  • Can you use card twice at the same shop?

    • Nope once per shop

      • Can you please provide link to this condition?

        • +4

The conditions are not that hard to find you've been given the main link. Try and help yourself.

        • +1

It's on the main page of the deal, it's stated multiple times.

Eg: "The offer is limited to 5 statement credits with no more than one statement credit per merchant location."

        • Thanks mate

  • Just used it in Makoto Sydney and Superbowl Chinatown for some take away - Spicy fish ball and fried noodles. Yum!

  • Anyone got credit on their statement?

I asked about Nandos Melbourne Central and was assured that if its on the list i will get credit as long as i have registered. it can take up to 8 weeks for credit to appear!

    • Might want to check if you swiped your card btw 23 & 30 Nov. I first thought for the whole Nov then found out I spent the first $20 on 22 Nov so no $10 credit for that transaction. But the rest I spent after 23 Nov received the statement credit.

    • Yeah I've got all 5 credits. They came 3 or 4 days after I made the purchase. One of them they had to put through manually as I never got an email for it, the second one I didn't get an email for seemed to come through by itself.

      • +1

I only managed to spend twice… too busy!

But first one, received email, and credit quite quickly.
Second one, no email, followed up (like you suggested in an earlier post) and they said if I didn't get it, to email them again - but it should turn up, and it did. :)
