Crazy deal if it's a 3rd or 4th gen Core, wish the site had more details.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could probably turn the 550W PSU into a Bunsen burner and use the 1TB as fuel.

1TB HDD is ~$65, ~$75 for RAM (if it's 1 stick like the other deal), ~$18 DVD burner, $1 PSU. Leaves $130 for the case, motherboard, and most importantly, the CPU.

CPU smells like an i5 680 to me (doubt it would be a 3470). Could be something else if the 3.6GHz listed is the Turbo Boost speed. ;)

      YMMV.

Edit: Assumed that it would be an Intel CPU because of the sticker on the case. Turns out the case is just a generic picture that's thrown around (search Google for the image). Could be an AMD CPU, which means it's anybody's guess.

  • No specs in the listing tho.

  • Perhaps the sticker on the case is a representation of the CPU used at least?

  • Must be AMD.

    • +1

Cheapest AMD with stock 3.6 clock is A8-5600K which is $109 individually.

      • +2

Your guess is correct. The specifications are now online — it's an AMD A8.

  • This is like a game of Cluedo! It could even be an i7 980 Extreme or a Phenom II X4. Who wants to take one for the team and find out?

    • I've sent an email, if guessing a reply will be a while off though.

  • Can't believe they still allow for floppy disk slots on cases

    • +6

Front USB3, card readers, hot swap bay.

  • Whats a reasonably good price for Windows 8 64 bit to put on this?

    • +2

Looks like they want around $120

  • good price but AMD FM2+ is due like imminent which explains the blowout price on current AMD stock which is slow moving to say the least

    • +1

      Yes probably clearing old stock

  • sadly, the currently Gen APU doesnt work on Hybrid cross fire with GCN cards of the 7 series or the R series.
so you can only throw in a 6 series card to make use of the graphic core in this A8 APU

If this is FM2+ board with an A10 2014 CPU, i dont mind pay 100 more for it.

I wonder if you can deduct the useless ODD and PSU off the price to save like 50 :)

  • There is no Sydney store.

    Comparison with MSY:
    5600K $109
    Asus A55M-E $63
KVR 8GB kit $86 (Kit because FM2 likes that)
    Caviar blue 1tb $66
    LG DVD dribve $19
TT V3 $75 (not looking at SHAW)

$418 for parts alone. Looks like a good deal, but would have been nice to see A75 for USB3 and 1600MHz ram. Then again the store is probably clearing old stock so selling at a fair loss.

    • +1

You can't make a comparison like that, since the case/PSU combo in this deal isn't a TT V3. It's some generic case that comes with its own PSU.

    • +1

You can get a USB3 card for your mini PCIE port for $14 (MSY I think? Saw one online somewhere) so that's less of an issue these days (I remember when I bought my mobo, it was cheaper to spend more on a better mobo that had USB3 than to add it later).

  • I'm after a new desktop for a replacement for one of the admins at work. Just need it for Word/excel/MYOB + general admin work. Would this be fine or should I go with the previous deal (mentioned above) and pay the extra $$?

    • +1

This one will be more than powerful enough for general office work (or school, etc).

Just keep in mind that it doesn't include windows, or monitor, keyboard, mouse.

    • I wouldn't get anything above a pentium because heat = needs cooling = air flow = dust = maintenance/failure. Those programs would be better served with a 60gb SSD, don't stress about CPU or anything over 500GB.

  • +1

Fantastic for a cheap media PC, it would play HD movies perfectly and decent for early console emulation. I just built something similar using some new and spare parts and the cost was higher than this.

    • No HDMI on board.

      • It has DVI which does 1080p video.

  • Why is the seller not listing the spec, but than again it is cheap and could be nasty.

  • Can someone tell me if this is a good build to throw Win Server 2008/2012 on, maybe add MS SQL 2008 on at a later stage. All I'm going to use it for is to learn Win Server 2008/12 and SQL 2008.

    • +2

      Should be fine.

      • Thanks for that.

      • +1

Second that, would be surprised if you idled over 2 gig memory… plenty of room to move.

  • thoughts on combining this deal with a 240Gb SSD, Windows 8 and one of these:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121265 or http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

    For gaming and CAD/fluid simulations.

    Possible problems:
    Bottle necked?
PSU would crash and die trying to power the 680/7970?
CPU too slow for reasonable performance doing fluid sims?

    • Tom says this CPU is actually about as fast as older i5/i7s for games:

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overcl…

I'd be surprised if it didn't bottleneck it a bit, but you should still get great game performance for the price.

But yeah, I can't see this PSU being sufficient for those GPUs.

Maybe get a nice brand 80+ 600w PSU for $80 or so and upgrade CPU later if you need too? Surely still cheaper…

    • I'm running an MSI GTX 680 Lightning on a Silverstone 500W… Checked the usage and it's <400 watt. I have plenty of room, completely stable.

      • +2

Yeah, but Silverstone is an actual brand with a reputation. It's way better than any of the no-names that claim to be "500W".

There's no regulation saying PSU makers can't just exxagerate like crazy, so the cheapo ones do, all the time. For them, 500W means it can manage a peak output of 500W once a week, as long as it's for no more than 10 milliseconds.

Your silverstone can do 500W 24/7 for years. Completely different build quality, very different parts inside it.

        • fair point :) - I guess what I am saying is that the PSU minimum requirements for GPU's are a guide.

  • Any cheap 20"+ Display deals going atm?

  • 24" AOC E2450swh seems like a good buy for the $$$

  • great deal!

  • 4 more weeks till Kaveri official PR release. Not really worth it but if you want to game on the cheap in 720p resolution for Dota 2 , CS:Go then this PC isn't too bad.

  • FM2 is dead, its all FM2+ now, A55 has no USB 3, crappy RAM, APU's want high bandwidth RAM 1866MHz+, no name cheapo PSU and case. Bleh.

    • +1

Fans probably sound like a hoover

  • +1

    It's been OzBargained :(

  • +1

yeah not happy - classic spent too long researching specs. But I had it in checkout and added address but order would not process further. Have emailed them as I still want to buy it and website is still showing stock on hand at both facilities ==> Bait advertising if they jack the price up!

    • Not bait advertising. They were available for around 24 hours. You were just too slow.

  • ACCC: "Bait advertising takes place when an advertisement promotes certain (usually ‘sale’ prices) on products that are not available or available only in very limited quantities. It is not misleading if the business is upfront in a highly visible, clear and specific manner about the particular product ‘on sale’ being in short supply or on sale for a limited time."

No mention of duration or quantities in ad and items still in stock on website at non sale price.
Not quick enough but not too slow.

  • It's been 8 days and I'm still at "ready for dispatch" >.>

    • Yup same here. I smell an imminent order cancellation due to pricing error :-/

  • I got my PC and it has team elite 1600mhz ram in it. Put a 128GB SSD in it, going to get a cheap GPU for it now.
