Total: $380 + MOTHERBOARD + assembly (prices from MSY)

MSY costs more once you throw the motherboard in, then factor in free shipping and assembly.

    • The problem is, nowhere on Cnettech's site does it list the make & model of the Mobo, HDD, RAM or PSU; hence we could be comparing apples and oranges for all we know, since those components you selected from MSY are actually half-way decent (G.Skill RAM, Seagate 1TB Barracuda, etc.) You can pick up a respectable

The mobo is just listed as a Gigabyte H81 (doesn't even mention the form factor); Gigabyte make at least 7 mobos with the H81 chipset.

Once again; PC hardware retailers failing to stay honest.

      • This type of "Bargain" is not for us "tech" because they don't even list the model of ram and motherboard which can make a big difference.

Rep, a lot of ozbargainers here are quite technical if you want us to buy post the full details for us to compare.

          Doesn't matter.

They should outline the exact specifications, regardless of the demographic it's intended for.

If it was Harvey Norman; that'd be one thing. But PC hardware places should be held to a different standard imo, since their clientele is often slightly more clued-in than the average Joe.

The only reasons retailers keep doing this is because they're trying to clear out unwanted stock and they cover it up with one or two, higher-end components that are meant to be the showpieces of that build; while the rest is just generic, Yum-Cha/SHAW rubbish.

      • Agreed & +1. Rep what are brands of the parts used (eg. mobo, ram etc)?

          Hi homersyd
          We have updated spec

          Processor: Intel Core i3 -4130-3.40Ghz
          Chipset: Asus H81M-E Mainboard
          Memory: Team 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz Elite

Case: COOLER MASTER ELITE 334U 420W
          Output: DVI, VGA, 2 x USB2 & 2x USB3(Rear) & 2 x USB2 (Front)

          Cnet

      • Hardly being dishonest. Perhaps it will be one of several H81 motherboards.

As long as they do in fact supply a Gigabyte H81 motherboard, how are they being dishonest??

Having said that, it does help to know exactly which mobo you are getting so you know what it supports, how many USB 3.0 ports, etc

        • Appreciate your disclosure but how did the Gigabyte motherboard suddenly transform into an ASUS?

          The RAM seems okay:
          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313…

Compared to WorkAround's earlier post, from MSY an equivalent system would come to $445 (plus assembly if you can't do it yourself).

So it seems like a decent deal at that; but it did take several posts before we really knew that. Just a word of advice for next time (not trying to be unwelcoming).

        • Hi Amar89
I am very new to Ozbargain, thanks for your feedback and sure we will list full details on our next post.Cheers

Edit: Disregard. Ninja'd by Rep while I was typing this post up.

You raise a few valid points. I just realised they didn't even list the RAM as 1600mhz, I just assumed the Kingston/G.Skill 2x4GB KIT would be comparable. A single stick of 8GB 1333mhz isn't much cheaper, but I agree, the transparency should be there.

The Seagate Barracuda is pretty much the cheapest when it comes to a 1TB drive, I don't see what else they could replace it with unless they've got stock which fell off the back of a truck and doesn't come with warranty.

The H81 motherboard is another can of worms though, so I just left it as ???. MSY's got them between $65-75 and an $85 Gigabyte one.

It's hardly dishonest, just not the whole picture. Like you said, most likely an exercise in clearing out old stock. A Gigabyte motherboard is hardly "yum cha" rubbish, and besides WD/Seagate, what other drives could they be offering?

I see this as an alright deal, since there are no obvious yum cha bits and pieces that other builds carry (unless you're worried about the RAM being two sticks of dog turd here). There's no glaring issue besides the lack of information. Better than a $500 build with a $34 SHAW PSU included, or using a SHAW case with a PSU included.

  • any advice on how well this will perform as a NAS? I was considering a HP microserver gen 8

  • Hi Rep, How many USB 3.0 ports/USB 2.0 ports??

    • Hi simmogunner
      we have just updated Spec
      Output: DVI, VGA, 2 x USB2 & 2x USB3(Rear) & 2 x USB2 (Front)
      Thanks

Would this be worthwhile putting one the cheap graphics cards in it that have been on here lately? Good enough for a budget gaming setup? PSU Good enough?

    • +1

For something like a 7790 or 7950, those draw about 155-180W at load, and this processor is fairly power-efficient (55W TDP), so it shouldn't go over 300W peak draw for the entire rig.

From reading around though, the CM Elite's 420W PSU is an old model, with lacklustre output especially on the 12v rail.

Just remember with lower-end PSU's, they're not really going to come close to pumping out the rated wattage at peak load, due to their inefficient designs, so your best bet would be to play it safe (no overclocking, no RAID arrays, no extra coolers/or too many fans).

  • IN STORE PICK UP ONLY

    Laaaaaame.
I'll have to wait for the next CPL deal then.

    • +1

I think that means if you want the cheap printer, then you have to pick it up in store because they're not gonna ship the printer as well under their "free shipping" deal.

      • +1

        Hi WorkAround
The system $399 is online (FREE SHIPPING) and if you pick up $399 system in store than you can take the Laser Mono printer at $39 (Printer $39 not for Online offer)
        Hope this answer your question

  • Can you choose upgrades or customisations during the ordering process? Or do I need to send an email?

    EDIT: The listing states -

It includes an Intel GEN4 Core i3-4130-3.4Ghz CPU, Gigabyte H81 motherboard

    But you've also written -

    CPU: Intel GEN4 CORE i3-4230 3.5Ghz
    Chipset: Asus H81M-E

  • decided to potentially buy this one after getting kicked out of buying there other system http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121376
I'll wait and see what they same to my emails as to whether I can get the other one and cancel this order. bait advertising as its still in stock on their website but for the higher price….
