After nearly paying $29 for one of these a few weeks ago, I checked out buy in coins which had these cables for approx $1. I bought 2 of these delivered for under $2. They showed up today and work well so thought I'd share.

sync and charging works even with that ridiculous new iOS. I've bought these before from the same seller. The wires will eventually come loose from the head. For $1ea, I bought 15 of them…
is it not viable buying a higher quality item for a higher price? instead of having to carry around a spare in case one breaks?
Not really, the official apple one isn't that much higher quality, the one that came with my iphone 5 nearly frayed to death after a few months.
However, I've personally tried this and it's a fantastic way to extend the life of your iphone charger.
If you're needing 5 or more, you could consider buying from here- $0.86 each
I went through that seller. Very fast shipment.
Do these have compatibility issues these days?
I bought a couple third party early on and since IOS7 they are being rejected as uncertified and won't sync or charge.
iOS7 is a pain in the ass. It's very hit and miss. I bought one at the very start of the iP5 release, and it still works with iOS7.0.3, (syncs)
I bought a few off ozB more recently, one didn't work at all, one worked until the iOS7 update, but now it wont sync but still charges. 2 worked right up till I updated to iOS 7.0.3, and then they stopped syncing but still charge.
So maybe don't buy them in such a big bulk just in case you end up with a box of cables which dont sync.
I've now got more cables than adapters, anyone know where I can get reliable adapters (one that will not overheat or cause an explosion of some sort)?
What "adapter" - do you mean the plug pack for the wall?
Just take your crappy ones to any Apple Store and get them swapped for a GENUINE APPLE FOR $14.

The special pricing on Apple USB power adapters is limited to one adapter for each iPhone, iPad, and iPod you own and is valid until October 18, 2013
AHHHH CRAP… has it ended?
Be careful about buying these cables. I got about 20 cables at home. Some of then even promised to be IOS & compatiable. But when I plug them in I get warnings or they dont charge. Or they start to charge and stop a minute later.
I then paid $5 for a 2m cable which said IOS 7 compatible. No warning messages. Guess what works great.. No more messages and charges/syncs every time.
I would advise people to look on ebay and find retailers that promise you get no warning messages with their cables. They are out there!
there are too many cheap cables out there, that may work for a few days/weeks, then no good! Frustrating, and if you have bought 4-5 that have failed, you begin to think buying a genuine one would have been a smarter choice.

OH COME ON… let's keep it real, OK?
I got my last batch from Eastlakes on Ebay. 10 for $8.99, but they have now put the price up. Those ones chuck the "incompatible" error on iPhone 5 but they still charge and sync OK.
Plenty of Aussie eBay sellers sell Lighting cables for under $2 each, so there is no point waiting for a month from Asia. And local sellers on eBay means that if there is problems, you are morelikely to get a replacement.
For something less "crappy", look at these braided ones. I got some a few weeks back, and they are great quality - about $4.50 per pair, and they don't throw any errors whatsoever on iPhone 5…

Hey chief.
I'm being real.
I was stuck away from home without a charger, and I couldnt' find anything in JB Hi Fi for less than $29.
Well done on finding some deals that nearly match this one.
Did syncing work? or only charging ??
