  • thanks, bought one

    including woolworth caltex?

    • Yes, I used it a few times already without any problem.

    • +1

      Be REALLY CAREFUL though

ive noticed alot of Caltex outlets specifically state "Starcash not accepted" so cant use it on fuel

check your local pump before buying

  • .

  • +1

If you are refilling 50 litres, this is equivalent to 10c/L discount…not too shabby I guess

    • +3

Huh. .. How did you work that one out ?

$15 for $20 sounds like a 25% discount to me……… regardless of the c/litre of petrol.

      • +5

Because the discount per litre varies with th number of litres of fuel you purchase as you are only allowed to buy 1 voucher.

        • -2

your answer is still too difficult for some to understand :p

      • +12

no matter how much you actually pay, you only save $5 by using the star cash. if you add 50 liter, you actually get $5/50l=10c/L discount.

      • +12

$15 for $20 sounds like a 25% discount to me……… regardless of the c/litre of petrol.

It's only a 25% discount if you buy $20 worth!!! If you buy $50 worth you still only save the $5, (which is only 10%)!!!

People, forget the cpl and % discount… Simply put, it's a $5 discount!!!

      • +1

If you normally fill up only $20 worth of petrol, then yes you're getting the full 25% off. However to fill up a full tank, most of us (excluding motorcyclists) would need to fill up more than that. The $5 saving is then spread across the number of litres that is pumped.

        • +1

It's simply a $5 discount, regardless of how much in excess of $20 you fill up.

        • I'm not religious but I'm happy to give you an Amen!!!

        • Potential a = 13.6L Top-up, after hours (esp •motorcyclists) - Down to $1.10/L a-$15. and else, lighter cars might yet realise a couple of '$5; no hassle by: acute timing&certain canniness

          Thanks OP

        • the closer to 20 $ at the bowser / shop, the more concentrated become such a flat faced $5.

          +of (any) 20.oo denominations thereof

    • +2

      It's 25% off a $20 fuel purchase. Approx $0.35/L discount (up to $20 fill).

      • +2

If paying $1.40 a litre. Remember you can't combine StarCards with Woolies fuel offers so best to fill up with $20 separately.

        • I didn't know that. thanks for mentioning it.

        • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Starcard and Starcash are different. I believe Starcard is more a deal between big corporation and fuel company while Starcash is like a gift card that can be bought by anyone. I am under the impression that Starcash can be used with the conjunction with discount docket, otherwise what is the point for us to buy a gift card / starcash for our friends/relatives?

        • Yep you're right, confusingly there's a StarCash Card (this promo) and a StarCard. I think a long time ago StarCash cards used to be referred to as StarCards and it stuck in my mind.

As for combining with a Woolies voucher I'm sure I've seen it written somewhere but I can't find it at the moment, maybe that's changed too…

        • +1

Can a fellow ozbargainer verify this since I can't find it in Starcash terms and conditions as well as the fuel docket terms and conditions?
Just want to make sure that all of us can get a greater benefit :).

        • +1

Yep I looked this up earlier

          1. I hold a Caltex StarCard – can I use it at Caltex Woolworths/Safeway service stations?

Yes, the co-branded service stations will be pleased to accept your StarCard – however, you will not be able to use it in conjunction with a fuel discount docket from a Woolworths store.

EDIT: Whoops I see what the confusion is. Starcard can't be used with discount voucher (as per above). But this deal is for starCASH .

        • +3

sorry mate but it's wrong advice. StarCash is just a like a cash card. It worked out ok for me just last week on my $250 credit card award point redeemed StarCash. Just showed the cashier your woolies fuel offer or everyday rewards card, discount will be awarded, then just tell them you want to pay with a Caltex Cash card.

        • I guess Caltex needs to rebrand either their Starcash or Starcard. It has caused some confusion in OZbargain.

    • If you get a $20 voucher for $15, then you regardless you spend $1000 or $20 in the shop, you save $5. Simple as that.

  • +2

Last deal was better $5 for $10 unlimited vouchers.
10 of these cards = $300 for an extra $100 is alright, making 10 account is just pain in arse.

    • Damm that would have been better. What was the expiry on these?

missing those days of free/cheap $10 stockland and westfield gift cards :)

    • +1

to DEvok: speaking of relevance, the deal you've mentioned is 16 months too late. The current one is the best out there at the moment.

  • +2

Remember, Groupon saved your credit card detail without asking. When you have bought from them before, and then buy the second time, you can just click to buy and your credit card detail used previously will already present.

I got to trouble to email them etc to remove this. Worst of all, they never asked us or tell us they will store the CC detail. Be very careful if you are using Debit Card as anyone who can access your account can easily empty your bank account. Also, with the Facebook link login, it is very easy to steal someone else account

    • Use Paypal.

      Edit: beateddd

    • Your credit card will cover you for non authorized transactions.

Can't get a lot of fuel for $20 these days. Every bit helps but hardly worth the effort for me.

    • +7

      Not a true ozbargainer

    • $15 is plenty!

    • +1

That's not the point. Petrol is expensive, yes. But if you don't get this card, you'll be paying $20 compared to only $15 for us who bought this deal. So essentially this is a free $5 deal.

    • +4

Thanks for the warning, I nearly bought one.

    • +1

25% off is good enough for me.
The effort you spent to read and nag here would be enough to get the deal already.

    • $20 of fuel is about 4 weeks of commuting for me

    • 25% off fuel means about 70km of free driving for me on LPG. If I'm in the vicinity of a Caltex station I would use it.

      • +1

Cluster, may I have your green tea yoghurt recipe you mentioned in the Connisseur icecream post, please? Save me from experimenting. [Off topic but I can't send you a PM.]

        • +3

Sure. Standard Easiyo yogurt container and any plain yogurt mix. 20g of yogurt mix, 120g of milk powder (makes 7 batches from one expensive yogurt mix bag, tastes the same). Shake/mix as usual with water and then add 2 teaspoons of sugar and one heaped teaspoon of matcha green tea powder. You can buy the very fine powder at larger Asian groceries. Shake/mix, but the powder won't dissolve very well in the cold milk. Leave yogurt to set for usual time. When it's done you'll notice the powder partially dissolves and sits at the top and bottom of the container. Mix well and it should be done.

I haven't tried different combos of sugar and powder. Maybe dissolving the powder in hot water, leaving it to cool and then adding to the yogurt mix would work better. I like to add one Yakult bottle to my yogurt making to add the special bacteria it contains. The bacteria happily multiplies in the mix and Yakult is very expensive per litre.

        • Ta, I'll have to give the milk powder/yakult ideas a go too.

        • This reminds me of that Ice Cream maker deal - my order was eventually cancelled. I was looking forward to that.

    Wow not bad!

My fuel bill a week for my motorbike is $15 (gives me ~280km) and that's with 95RON!

  • +1

I noticed that the padlock on the URL was not locked when checking out.
So to be on the safe side I decided to pay via PayPal instead of risking my credit card details on an unsecured link.

    • Also, the credit card transaction will be charged 3% of international transaction fee and foreign currency conversion fee. I think Groupon's merchant account is based in US. it's weird !!!

      • i use my 28 degrees card to avoid this fee, however, i noticed recently in Groupon's terms that they will reimburse you for your credit card fees if you contact them..

      • what the.. serious?!
Do they actually mention this anywhere on the site?

What a pain to have to contact the mto reverse CC fees. Is there a documented process for this ? :S

      • Far out can you people pls stop providing unconfirmed (and wrong) information! The link says groupon.com.au which means it's Groupon Australia, not the US one so no international fee whatsoever, I've been buying with them for more than a year and never have any issue. In fact they're one of the best as when I complained about one of the deal I bought, they cheerfully gave me full refund.

        • CC shows GROUPON ZURICH CHE and have charged me 23c.

      • +2

Have you got any evidence to prove that?

I have bought lots from Groupon and my credit card was charged in AUD with no extra fees every single time.

      • 3% of $15 is .45 cents.

If you are cheaping out on this then man……. You have watched too much office space movie.

      • Also, the credit card transaction will be charged 3% of international transaction fee and foreign currency conversion fee. I think Groupon's merchant account is based in US.

source? doesn't groupon charge you not the merchant?

        • It depends on your bank too.
Some banks are dodgy and charge you for xfer fees when payment is made overseas even in AUD.

        • yes but the issue here is who's charging you - afaik it's groupon australia so not an international/overseas transaction

        • Did you know if you go visit Sydney Aquarium in Sydney, if you pay the entry fee with your credit card and your bank may charge you a fee for int. xfers. You will be charged the xfer fee.

Because Sydney Aquarium's merchant is overseas and the bank will see it as a intl xfer even if it was made in AUD.

Some banks do not charge this:
CitiBank, NAB. Are the ones I know of. ANZ however do charge this.

        • I think so, CitiBank doesn't charge it.

Well, some financial institution really like to milk EVERY cents from their customers…

However AMEX and GE Money other CC (except 28D card) are charging those fees.

      • I use starthere to buy groupon deal and always see USD rebate amount.

  • It says it will be delivered in 2 weeks time.
But once you pay for it, you get a PDF voucher in your Acount.

    • That pdf leads to no where. You cant use that pdf. It's just generic groupon system generated

      • PDF works for me. On the PDF it says starcash card will be shipped in approximately 2 weeks.

  • cheers!@

  • Thanks OP, save 5 bucks

  • Anyone used these groupon deals where it says limit 1 per account. Can you make multiple accounts and get more than one?

    • yes i suppose u can, but u might need to supply diff names and addresses for each account.

      • do you have to use diff names and addresses?

i mean end of the day they are making money off us and yeah *shrugs

        • I suppose this is per person, not per household.

Different name/email but same postal address should be okay??

        • yeah. Perhaps. hmmmmmmmmmm

        • Different family member's name (real!) and same address, worked. But seems have to state 18+ yo, otherwise may get two more for my boys.

  • I paid for it via PayPal and when it re-directed me to the Groupon website, I was logged out. I logged back in and says I haven't purchased anything…But my paypal did get debited and I got a receipt id! argh!

    Edit: Got it fixed

  • I found Caltex fuel used up quick than Shell for some reason. I have tested a few times.

    • Whatever, can't be 25% quicker. Just fill $20 each time if you are worried.

    • Shell still has non-alcoholic petrol, which has better energy density.

  • +2

Can't find the refer a friend link anywhere on my account.

There's a link for "Recommend now and earn $10" but it went to my credit page.

Is it only my account or everyone else too ?

    Just wondering…

    • just in case someone else wondering :

got the answer from their fb support

"unfortunately due to some technical glitches our refer a friend link is currently down and we'll be back up and running in a week or two"

  • +1

and also, how OP get the link for caltex deal ?

Can't find it by browsing manually…

  • WHY do people keep carrying on about this '25%'? Yes, the actual deal is a 25% saving… But who is seriously going to stop for 10 minutes and only put $20 (about 14 litres) of fuel in their tank nowadays?
If you can use multiple cards or combine it with other vouchers, then yes you save more. But it is $5!

    • So you never fill your car yourself? Or when you fill your car at Caltex, you are just too busy to pick up a $5 note that slips out of your wallet?

It's five dollars discount for real, and you don't have to go out there lining up 20 minutes to get it, you stop for the petrol. And no matter if you want the discount or not you have to wait and pay.

      • I never said I didn't want the $5 saving. What I'm trying to say, to those that keep insisting, is… It's NOT 25%!!! (unless you only buy $20 worth!!!)
Edit: And milly, if you want to stop 3 or 4 times a week to save your 25%, then by all means go for it. For me, I'll just stop the once, save my $5 and only save about 7%!

        • Well, it's 25% off of the card itself, not the petrol. I don't get it why people discuss the percentage vs value thing, it's not even an issue. Some people that tops up before the petrol price bumping up, or fill their bikes may get maximised "percentage discount", but that makes no difference to their pockets.

Anyway, I got printable vouchers with unique barcode. Am I supposed to print it out and scan at the counter? But it also says "Your StarCash card will be shipped to you in approximately 2 weeks", what's that for??

        • +1

I don't get it why people discuss the percentage vs value thing.

I agree, that is my whole point. And I was addressing those that insist on using this incorrect comparison. Even you yourself made this comment below.

          mily 30 min ago ¶
Whatever, can't be 25% quicker. Just fill $20 each time if you are worried

          But enough about that.
As for the printable voucher, it's simply the individual Groupon voucher. They send this out for every purchase you make from them. Consider it to be just like a receipt!

        • Yeah I myself fully understand the association between percentage and fuel volume. Anyway, thanks for the heads up about the voucher.

    • +2

A true ozbargainer is happy to save $5.

      • Yes we are!!! But I would rather be saving this fictional 25% off 'the total fill up' that people think they're getting!!! ;)

        • -1

It's not on the fill up total. You don't understand how % works?

        • +1

I understand EXACTLY how percentage works.
It's 25% off for the deal. That being $5 of $20 (is 25%). The problem is, others keep persisting with comments about the 25% saving at the bowser, which is completely incorrect unless you only put $20 in your tank. Which I stated, is utterly ridiculous nowadays given the price of fuel and the fact that you would only receive about 14 litres!

  • Really miss the Westfield and caltex $5 for $10, hope they bring those up again.

  • Is the card a use once and discard or can it be used multiple times?

    • multiple times until there is no balance left in it? I don't think you can recharge or top up the balance if that what you question is about.

    • I think multiple times. NO way a gift card is one use only.

      • Sorry, I should rephrase that question. So If I want to fill up $100 worth of petrol I would need to buy 5 cards in advance?
How many cards are you guys stocking up with?
I get a bit nervous spending $100s on gift cards that are essentially cash that I might get stuck with.

        • 1 per person

  • Can you use more than one card for a transaction? Eg. 4 cards for $80 worth of fuel?

    • I would say yes u can.
