Might be a good deal for some but 256mb ram + 800mhz cpu doesnt really cut it (when compared to similar priced sub $100 Huawei G300+ and Y300….

    • Actually, it is worth it when comparing it to a Huawei, since Windows Phones usually never lag unlike Huawei. The problem is, WP7 is outdated and being phased out. Anything in the 10 series can't be upgraded to WP8 or further either, so 610, 710, 910 and 800, 900.

A friend of mine got a cheap Huawei phone, it was terrible, the touchscreen was unresponsive and it was extremely laggy. WP uses RAM and CPU different compared to Android so you can't really compare the specs of a phone. This is why phones using WP generally run faster than high end Androids on lower specs.

But yeah, you shouldn't get this phone, almost 2 years old, outdated version of WP that can't be upgraded. Better off getting a 520 for $50 more.

I'm a massive Windows Phone fan but I wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone. The free offline GPS is nice, but it's an obsolete phone which will not get any updates. It can't run WP8 apps and of the WP7.5 apps out there, it won't run any that require 512MB RAM or more. Anyone who buys this for anything more than a backup smartphone or extremely light use will be a bit disappointed. It's also chunkier an heavier than newer handsets with worse battery life.

Spend another $50 for the much, much better unlocked Lumia 520 on WP8. It outclasses this and other handsets worth a lot more than the $148 it demands.

EDIT: The fact it's locked to Optus makes it even worse.

    • thanks for this information i was thinking to buy it, as a spare phone, its not worth.

I purchased one of these at target when they were $50 on clearance i agree with your points but it does have some good points.

It lasts around 3 to 4 days without charge.
      GPS is very good.
Web browsing is fine and works through the wifi.
      Email updates.
      Fast.

I may be wrong on the battery life front - will concede that. I think if you own one already, you probably bought it before the Lumia 520 was around, so it makes sense. Just suggesting it's not worth buying a locked, obsolete phone when the new one is a little bit more expensive. However if you're on a really tight budget, it is 50% more expensive for the Lumia 520.

I just can't see the sense in buying a WP7.5 handset since the new Lumia WP8 range is so good

It definitely is fast and fluid out of the box and if I'm not mistaken has internet sharing functionality too.

EDIT: Just seen the fact you bought it for $50 - bargain. At 1/3rd the cost of a 520 that's too hard to pass up, I definitely would have gotten one :)

  • Lumia 610 only has 256Mb RAM, and this causes a lot of programs to not run in the background, such as Messenger. Skype cannot be installed too.

I agree with a previous comment re getting the 620 instead. I can't fault the 620 and it is almost identical dimensions to my old iPhone 3 (now rotting in a bin somewhere).

  • Get Huawei Y201 at target for $39 at target. Great phone for the price.

    • isn't the Huawei Y201 at target for $39 locked to Telstra? i know some have said to just try sim card first though as some are locked and some are not. hmmmm bugger it will give them a shot tomorrow

      • You can unlock it for $5 search the Y201 thread here.

  • As I said last time, Please don't waste your money on this. It is a terrible phone.

    • sort of, it wasn't TERRIBLE for the $49.95 Target cleared them out at a while ago…

I upgraded one to WP 7.8 and gave it to my mum. She actually loves it, but it's a shame that messenger can't popup new messages when the phone is in standby because of the background tasks limitation on 256Mb devices.

messenger only seems to work reliably if the phone is 'awake'.

  • 49.95 was good buy… 99.. meh :)

    better off get a 520 for 148

  • The Lumia 720 for $175.12 unlocked & delivered ($199 @ Vodafone less $23.88 from Qwibble.com.au ) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/116202 is strong competitor, being a higher spec phone for $27.12 more than the 520 @ $148. Unfortunately although the 720 is unlocked, it is only in white and is branded by Vodafone.

    • You can flash the 720, but I'm not sure the warranty issues on it so I've refrained from doing it.

Also, how do you go about getting cashback from that Qwibble site? It just redirects me to the Vodafone prepaid page.
