Kobo Arc 7" Android Tab - 16GB-$129 / 32GB-$159 / 64GB-$179 @ JB HiFi

140

Noticed these tabs recently dropped in price, previously $218 for the 16GB. Having played around with it a bit I can say that the screen is actually quite nice for the lower res and it was quite quick and responsive. Has a Kobo overlay on the OS with a few software features but still has access to Google's services.

Looks like a pretty good tablet.

Do note the battery life on this tablet is tested to be better than Nexus 7's (probably because of it's TI OMAP dual core CPU) and the GPU performance also outshone the N7.

In short, this tablet may actually be superior to the N7 in several ways. It doesn't have Bluetooth though.

    • Interesting. However one thing with the N7 is the beautiful stock Android experience. I had a look at this product, and it strays away greatly and looks to impact on the smoothness of the device.

      Pretty cool alternative though.

no gps, no bt, no sd card

tough sell with 2012 refurb nexus 7s being about the same price

        • Well it's targeted at a different audience, plus Nexus doesn't support SD card either so there's not much difference. And the Kobo is aimed to the ebook / multimedia consumption crowd, and runs a customized ROM for that express purpose. They're probably not going to care that the operating system is a little outdated.

For the avid ebook reader / browser / video watcher this tablet is probably a better choice than a refurb N7 tablet, since the speakers are front facing and the battery life is longer.

  • No idea on the quality of these things but it's a nice change to see that if someone wanted more storage they don't have to pay massive prices for a few extra gb and no other improvement.

Possibly the worst and most obvious offender being Apple (iPhones $130 extra for 32gb and $260 extra for 64gb) the same upgrades costing $110 extra for the iPad…..

Does anyone have links to the 32/64gb models? Can only find the 16 on the site.

EDIT: Never mind, only the 16 is available to order online. The 32/64 only have the catalogue pages.

  • Not 100% certain, but I don't think this one supports usb OTG. Just something to consider and look into if that's important to you.

  • No external storage? Is it worth $50 to get 64GB instead?

  • Not sure if these are safe but some users have rooted and got a custom recovery running.

Price is sharp, what's the catch?
So I go into jbhifi and ask where it is, its here right next to the ereaders. Oh I didn't see it because its so ugly. Ummm it doesn't work, oh the power board must be off. No it really won't start up via button. Cue fumbling with usb cable. Ah Must be why its so cheap, ok bye!
