MSY now has reached 13,000 likes so the deal is active on Friday.

Appears to have a regular price of $39 at MSY

Following details from zKskita

N300 router fully compatible with DD-WRT. With 12,869 likes, it shouldn't take long for them to reach 13,000. You may remember me from editing the Asia-Pacific Hex-Code for the previous deal. I've been using this router ever since with DD-WRT and it has been working great.

      • Would I be right in saying 'many' ppl go to the Auburn store in NSW as it in a more centralised location & convenient for those near the west than Ultimo?

Wonder if they'll still honor the price if they still have large stocks after today (happened a few times in the past)?

  • -1

Why can't you just post it to me free of charge? waaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

  • Brodened 5 by walking in and out of the store 5 times.

The guy kept saying "Gees you Ozzies all look the same".

I replied "It's all meat pies, holden cars, a girl named Sharon and Grand Final day for us, Mr Chen"

They guys at MSY have such an awesome sense of humour. We all had a good laugh and hugged each other.

    ( jk )

  • heaps at auburn

    short line, no one cares

will probably run out soon though

  • I got the WD N600 swapped for Dlink DIR-632, after reading the comment on N600 is supported by Open-WRT, I am regretting getting the Dlink now. Should have just got the N600. More ram, slightly faster CPU. Not sure about the range though. I would expect the Dlink to have better range since it has an external antenna?

    • to me the N600 is better because its 5ghz

      i dont need 8 x 10/100

i'm also not convinced ddwrt or openwrt is that useful on these cheap units, the N600 seems to be ok on the base firmware

why dont you go back and buy both, still time and you can flush the loser on ebay

      • It takes me 45 mins to drive to the nearest MSY. I dropped by today because I just happen to be around there this morning, I was half expecting the place to be out of stock by the time I got there. It is probably out of stock by now.

Anyway, I read some reviews on Amazon of the N600 last night and there were a few people complaining of low throughput. I mean, what's the point of having dual band on paper if the router is slow? I am sure you can improve the range of the N600 if you put open-wrt on it and tweak the settings.

I have 2 routers at home, both running on dd-wrt, on the base firmware, I had to reset each router once in a few weeks when it "hangs". On dd-wrt, I haven't had to reset any router in quite a long time.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions and congrats on getting what I think is the better buy.

        Cheers.

      • i'm also not convinced ddwrt or openwrt is that useful on these cheap units, the N600 seems to be ok on the base firmware

i completely disagree, it makes them far more useful depending on what your doing with it. it basically gives it the options of much more expensive managed switches etc.

also if like me you use several different routers its nice having all the same configuration no matter what brand/model you are using.

  • I connected the N600 to my modem/router. One cable from the modem to the 'internet' port on the N600.
Get into setup wizard, all good until it asked for username and password.. I type 'admin', 'password' and clicking 'Confirm' doesn't do anything……..
Can't seem to access the N600 from browser either, what am I doing wrong?? :'(

Does my PC have to be directly connected to the N600 for this to work?

    • Nevermind. I got it working by connecting directly to the WD.

Installed OpenWrt now and I can't access the IU, 192.168.1.1 can't be accessed from my browser, but can be pinged zzz

      • +3

There is no IU, and no UI for that matter.

you need to follow the instructions at this page (using Telnet) to get the GUI to work.

        http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/luci.essentials

        in short:

        Telnet 192.168.1.1 (via DOS prompt)
opkg update (in Telnet, and the following)
        opkg install luci
        /etc/init.d/uhttpd start
        /etc/init.d/uhttpd enable

This is my first time trying OpenWRT as I have used DD-WRT a fair bit in the past. I have to say that I am amazed at the better setup in OpenWRT, and may never have to read obnoxious replies from Sasha on the DD-WRT forums ever again! That alone is worth it, as Sasha is extremely rude to people who politely ask a reasonable question.

          in short:
          Telnet 192.168.1.1 (via DOS prompt)

as far as i know there is no telnet as part of MS os's? (certainly not in my current win7 install) hence needing a client like putty

        • +1

You can add it in Win7 via Control Panel / Programs and Features / Turn Windows Features on or off (on far left) / Telnet Client (tick) / OK

Also, check out installing VoIP support using Asterix!

          http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/voip.asterisk

Anyone who thought the WD was a worse buy than the Dlink was ….upset later.

        • I get error:

          wget: bad adress 'downloads.openwrt.org'

how do i go about connecting the router to the internet. It would seem that it isnt as simple as plugging it straight in.

also, is it possible to reinstall stock firmware via telnet access?

        • plug your modem/rest of your normal network into the "internet" socket and you will have internet.

everything is already working on the router you just cant see a pretty web interface yet. if you were competent with command line commands (which im not) you can actually configure the whole router via telnet without ever logging in via a web interface.

is it possible to reinstall stock firmware via telnet access?

it is, but its not easy (comparably installing luci is simple)

        • The modem is working fine, and the modem wifi is also running fine.

but when i connect the router to the modem, and try to access internet via the router, it returns errors, and wont even allow me to ping a site such as google. my computer still says that i have internet access even though nothing is loading :(

in the openwrt page it says that i have to set my computer IP to 192.168.1.10 is this step crucial? i tried it but it still wouldnt work so i reverted to automatic ip settings.

        • The modem is working fine, and the modem wifi is also running fine.

yup, and that part of the network you need to plug into the "internet" port on the back of your n600. and have your computer (or laptop or whatever) plugged into port 1 on the back of the n600. make sure you have your wifi on your computer turned off/disconnected. turn off the n600 for a couple of seconds then back on again once everything is connected, this will refresh any ip's. your n600 should be handing out IP addresses via its dhcp so you can just set your computer to automatically get an address. your computer should end up with a 192.168.1.xxx (in the 100 range) and a gateway of 192.168.1.1?

assuming you have done that all ok you telnet in and you should see, amongst other things, the openwrt logo and some other stuff? which means you have telnetted and everything is working fine to this point.

you should then be able to go back to the instructions for installing luci and everything should work as explained.

if not get back to me and ill try and step you through it again slower and see exactly where its going wrong.

        • Ok plugged everything in fine, telnetted 192.168.1.1 and the logo and menu are showing, but when i try to run the commands for installing luci, i still get the errors:

          Downloading http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/packages…
          s.gz.
          wget: bad address 'downloads.openwrt.org'
          Collected errors:
          * opkg_download: Failed to download http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trun
          k/ar71xx/packages/Packages.gz, wget returned 1.

Should i have done the 'first login'? it says that you should do it, but i noticed that the web ui is installed via telnet, not ssh, and telnet is disabled when you do the first login step 'passwd'

        • i still get the errors:

that is still because for some reason your n600 cant see the internet.

Should i have done the 'first login'?

no, i just did simply what ive explained with both my dlink and the n600 both worked fine. this is something to do with your network/modem

just to confirm, your current modem has a lan port? and that is plugged into the "internet" port on your new n600? if you plug that lan cable from your modem directly into your computer you have no problems getting internet?

apart from that…. im a little lost. the n600 does have the recovery mode (hold reset in, power on router while holding in reset for 15 seconds) same as how you originally got openwrt installed the first time. might have to get the stock firmware and reinstall that via that method (google it first to make sure you can actually downgrade back to the stock firmware that way first, ive not tried it myself)

the only other other thing you could try is in telnet run "firstboot" and then reboot your n600. this wipes any changes etc you might have accidentally made and resets openwrt back to its default setup then try installing luci again as per the instructions here.

sorry i cant be more help. maybe someone else will come up with a beter option.

        • have you changed your network card back to DHCP after using a fixed ip to update the firmware?

        • have you changed your network card back to DHCP after using a fixed ip to update the firmware?

wouldnt that have stopped them being able to telnet into the n600?

and the ip of the pc hes (or she…) connecting to the n600 via port 1 wouldnt have any effect on the "internet" ports ip it gets from the modem?

(im asking because im stumped, not because i think i know any better)

i guess double checking that and also rebooting your PC wouldnt be a bad idea at this stage either……

        • yeah the problem is probably with the piece of crap TPG modem :/

The cables are all plugged in and yep, when connected directly to the modem, my laptop works fine.

I figure this might not be working because both of the modem and router addresses are 192.168.1.1, i think ill reinstall openwrt when i get a new modem :)

i took you advice and reinstalled stock firmware :D

sorry for taking your time, and thankyou :)

        • I figure this might not be working because both of the modem and router addresses are 192.168.1.1

nope it shouldnt be that because the "internet" port translates (nat) addresses. in fact the 1.1 from your modem is seen as a separate 1.1 range.

i took you advice and reinstalled stock firmware :D

with that installed and the n600 plugged in as i said before (modem -> "internet" port -> port 1 to your laptop), do you get internet through the n600 on your laptop with the stock firmware?

          sorry for taking your time

nah no need to be sorry. more than happy to try and help. :) sorry i couldnt be more help. feel free to PM me if you attempt it again and ill try and help you get it sorted.

        • +1

          fair enough.

Yep, with stock firmware, everything runs fine, but the router page is 192.168.6.1

I'll PM you when i'm up for a second shot, maybe in a few days. Your help was much appreciated :)

        • I can access the internet fine with the modem plugged into the internet socket of n600 ok BUT Like Xenox, i am getting wget: bad adress 'downloads.openwrt.org'

          what am i missing?

        • you need to make sure ur router get internet access in order to do opkg update and further steps. For my setup, my current home network is 192.168.0.x and this openwrt is 192.168.1.x. I plug in my current modem (with established internet connection) LAN connect to MyNet N600 WAN. Then, from MyNet N600 LAN to my laptop. In this stage, my laptop can get access into internet. In short, my modem—MyNet N600—laptop. Afther that, telnet 192.168.1.1 which is the MyNet N600 with OpenWRT and proceed with opkg update and install luci after that.

        • i did have modem (netcomm n9w [which has very poor wireless range])-n600-laptop setup, internet is working fine as i can surf and download etc somehow still get reported (as above) error when try to get opkg update to work.
my modem has 192.168.1.x and so is the openwrt, like xenox's prevous question, is it because both modem and n600 both has 192.168.1.x?

anyway, reflashed to stock firmware then get 192.168.6.1 for n600 then factory reset again then get 192.168.1.x again. guess i will stick to stock for now and have n600 setup in wan bypass mode (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=933517) or should i set it up in full bridge mode (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=814956)? any idea which is better in terms of speed and reliability?

by the way, any one know if whether iphone 4,4s and asus transformer tf300t can pickup 5ghz band at all? none of my devices at home can detect it so am just curious.

        • is it because both modem and n600 both has 192.168.1.x?

i wouldnt have thought so but maybe it is? try changing the ip of your modem to a different range (192.168.0.1) and see if you have any better luck?

if it helps any my internal lan is on a 10.x range

          worth a shot anyway

        • +1

I had the same issue as you. For some reason the router with OpenWRT wouldn't pick up a working DNS automatically from the attached modem.
I set it manually in telnet using these commands
          uci set network.wan.dns='8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4'
          uci commit network
          ifup wan

      • +1

thats caus you have to install luci which is the web config part of openwrt

from my post on the openwrt forum about the dir-632 install (which you also had to install luci to get the web config)

to get luci happening, telnet 192.168.1.1 "opkg update" then "opkg install luci" should work its magic. once thats finished "/etc/init.d/uhttpd enable" then "/etc/init.d/uhttpd start" and you should have web config via 192.168.1.1

those instructions are mostly if your using linux (debian/ubuntu/arch etc etc). to do that in windows you would have to find yourself a telnet client putty to be able to telnet into the router then everything should be the same

  • I'm the second in the queue this morning.. the first person swap for Dlink but I'm still getting the WD coz WD got more ram and cpu and supported by openwrt.. I dont need 8 port, 4 port is enough for me

  • Got one, got charged the full amount, waited in the queue 30 mins (yes I timed it) to get my money back and when I got there just got a full refund. I didn't need it…
I had to get other parts there and they were shocking for that, sold out of most of what I needed and I have 2 parts to RMA :@

  • Hi All,

I think this is a very good buy for $5 router with N600 speed! Grabbed 2 with my wife in the line in Auburn branch and not too much people early morning.

Just notice on OpenWRT that it is supported which is a good news for anyone who manage to buy it today! Going to setup wireless bridge at home to get rid of the cable lying on the ground. Plus good for shring the USB printer as well.

Really happy buy and tamp to get 2 more if my miss not complain :)

  • I got two, for $5 each why not, I just asked and the guy reached down and picked up a second.

  • +1

mine just dumped the config and had to do a hard reset

    stuff this

    installed openwrt

    Hostname OpenWrt
    Model WD My Net N600
Firmware Version OpenWrt Barrier Breaker r38205 / LuCI Trunk (svn-r9909)

  • If anyone needs one in VIC (3108), I have one spare… .

    • still got this spare? i'd be interested.
can u PM me if so?

  • Anyone have a spare one north of Adelaide?

  • Anyone have a spare one in Brisbane? PM me.

  • Quick question guys: Have a 2 storey house with Dlink 615 (with ddwrt) in the top corner and a PS3 at the bottom furthest corner.
    Have bought the n600

About to set it up but was wondering which one would suit better as the primary router cf repeater. If the n600 is better as a primary router does it still need to be openwrt.

The reason I ask is because I don't know which one is better head to head and the dlink currently has weird drop outs at times/slow downs (have figured out why though-even with all the other wan devices switched off)

    Sorry-I know it isn't a forum

    • the dlink currently has weird drop outs at times/slow downs

are you using the latest ddwrt? i had similar issues on the original firmware you use to get it from stock to ddwrt. once i went to the newer ddwrt it worked fine. however i then upgraded to openwrt which is better again :)
      taken from the previous page

There's a new version released on 2013-04-22. Flash this one in your DD-WRT interface.
      http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/D-Link/DIR-632/A1…

      .

I don't know which one is better head to head

id use your n600 as the main router as it has both 2.4 and 5ghz wifi, assuming you dont need more than the 5 lan ports… tho imho id openwrt both routers anyway. seems that most of these cheap routers have dropout issues etc with there stock firmware. also if you openwrt them both you have the same web interface for both routers making it easier imo

      • Cool thanks. Yeah latest firmware.

Don't need too many ports (the 615 only 4 ports anyways)

        • +1

oh sorry i was getting mixed up with the other router from this deal the 632 which i also have from a previous msy deal.

seems yours is supported by openwrt as well tho so id give that a try. good chance it will fix your dropouts/slowing issues http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dir-615
