D-Link DIR-632 N300 Router with 8 Port switch $11 Pickup from MSY

870

D-Link DIR-632 Wireless-N300 Router with 8 Port switch

Usually $39

Heard bad reviews of this model on stock firmware but apparently it's nice on DDWRT and DDWRT looks to be compatible with this model of router! (Not 100% sure on this though - for all I know it could be a different hardware rev) See below link.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-632

Can get it shipped but looked like an extra $10 and that was just for VIC.

First post, let me know if I've done anything wrong!

EDIT: Many thanks to zKskita for this, here's the DD-WRT firmware to download which will work on this device (Had to be hex edited for our region) http://www.mediafire.com/?6sdahk8rd65suvo Cheers!

Im over MSY. Twice I've called and booked items and I get there with no items in stock. Absolute joke when it comes to organising. You may call and they will tell you there is stock, odds are its low or there is none. MSY calls go to a switch each store dont answer the call so they have no idea if items are in stock or not.

    • -1

You can just use the Wayback Machine to get their local branch numbers. Never had any problems ordering for pickup here, perhaps you're making a generalisation. Granted their ability to assess their own store stock levels has always been a bit hit and miss (probably because the staff are so badly overworked), which is why I always drive in, rather than mess about online or on the phone.

    • Yeah I copt it afew time but prices keep calling me.
Try www.ijk.com.au there stock level accuracy and customer service is better and some products are close to MSY prices.

    • +14

MSY has never been about good service. They could adopt a policy of spitting in customers' faces and people would still line up

They don't answer phones, they've had dodgy return policies, they don't answer questions like "will this work on my pc", they'll leave you standing at the counter while they go to lunch, etc, and yet people still buy tons of stuff there. Because it's cheap.

If you want all the frills go to a normal retail shop. If you want cheap above everything else go to MSY. It's simple.

    • +3

It really is worth saving the hassle and just buying the item from their next competitor for $1-5 more. I go to Arc computer because their prices are competitive and stock levels are reasonably accurate. Even then, you can always get through to a person in 1-2 rings to double check which I do.

Edit: oh and you don't have to play the line ride at MSY

      • +2

Yeah I can vouch for Arc, there's a branch near me and when I pickup I'm in and out inside of 3 minutes.

  • +5

but apparently it's nice on DDWRT and DDWRT

but whats it like on ddwrt?

  • +1

Eleven bucks for an 8 port switch? And a Wireless N router?

    Bargain! Tks trobed.

  • Switch ports are only 10/100 though, if if you are after a gigabyte switch this is not the one

    • +4

10/100 killed it for me. I was hoping to get one, but need gigabit. Otherwise nice deal, as a 8 port switch.

      • What is gigabit for tho? isnt 10/100 fast enough for movie streaming, games etc?

Sorry but I am just asking

        • +1

its fine for almost everything, but when you start throwing files around between computers its sloooooooow

        • So if you dont really do that too often then 10/100 is fine. I only stream movies and play games. I would only move say a file 4gb once a day

        • +3

Gigabit is addictive though, you can't go back once you have it.

        • +1

          then 10/100 is fine

          yep

my home network is a mix of 10/100 between my yamaha AV receiver, wifi gear, raspberry pi etc and gigabit between my PC's that i often transfer files between (i have one each of 10/100/wifi router and GB switch)

        • For $11 it's the price of a WIFI dongle. Prett cheap. Yes Gigabit is a must.

      • you show me a HDD that can keep up with 1GB ethernet that isn't an SSD and I'll see the added value of getting it.

        • any hdd, even 2.5 inch usb drive will far far outdo 100mbit. many drives get past 100mb per sec which is aroung gb speed

  • Just put order thru to buy 2 for pickup

  • +1

Hi, I am a newbie in networking. Could someone please explain to me how this router could be useful for my adsl+ connection if I already have a wireless modem router ? What additional functionality will it offer ?

    • Short answer is you don't need it. Slightly longer answer is if you are willing to learn how to configure DDWRT you can turn it into a wireless bridge to extend your wireless network to another part of your house.

      • -3

Careful recommending DDWRT without verifying it is supported.

Unless i missed something, the DIR-632 isn't even listed at http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database letalone supported.

If it was id be getting one asap, my PCs wifi card sucks, cant varies between 1 bar and 4 bars when my iPhone is always full bars at the same location.

        • +1

You missed something: the link in the blurb at the top of this deal. Here it is again:

          http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-632

I'd be careful though in case there are new incompatible revisions.

        • +2

They've only released an A1 revision. Can confirm ones I bought from MSY are this revision. People have reported DD-WRT working well with it.

        • can I have a few of these connected up and create a client bridge?

        • I retact my comment then, i didnt see that, and didnt realise the dd-wrt support list was not accurate.

    • Extra ports maybe.
Or else use for B end of a wireless bridge for some devices that don't have wireless and are difficult to get cables to from your modem.

      • +1

Good point. I too am in the same situation. I already have ADSL2+ modem/router but old G model. I don't have wired network in my house. So my TV don't have a connection for internet and the wireless signal to that area is weak from the existing router.
Hope you don't need to run a network cable from existing modem/router to this one to use it as a bridge. Please confirm.
If there is a url which explains the steps to follow to configure it as a bridge would be helpful too.
        Thanks.

        • +1

          http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged

It wouldn't be very good as a wireless bridge if it required cabling did it?

        • Thanks for the link.
I've bought the D825 dual band router from the previous deal. Just got it delivered yesterday. Now I'll have some work to do for this weekend.

  • Is this better than the Dir-615 that's on sale regularly?

  • Too bad I just ordered the DIR-600 for $17. But then again, this has two antennas. I don't plan to have two yagis.

  • Perfect timing was looking for a router to back the cable modem…
OP you made my day thank you very much:-)

  • +1

Just in case any one was wondering, MSY Ultimo NSW has stacks of these in stock, boxes of them behind the counter.

Picked on up only 10 mins ago, walked in, no queues. Salesperson was interested why they were discounted as well.

No need for it, but good to have in case my router decides to fry itself again.

  • +1

Love DD-WRT compatible and cheap router, they can be the brain of your wireless toy

  • Nice. Just got an Email saying I can go pick it up.

  • just picked myn up from hurstville all good another bargain nabbed :)

    • Did Hurstville have much stock left?

      • When he went to get it off the shelf i didt see many

  • +17

I just bought it and installed DD-WRT. For those of you that can't be bothered changing the Hex-Code to Asia-Pacific, here's one I've edited: http://www.mediafire.com/?6sdahk8rd65suvo
    DD-WRT Guide: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-632

    • Very helpful for those looking to install DD-WRT. Thanks!

      • thanks zKskita, happily running ddwrt now :)

trobed you should put that link in the description, with thanks to zKskita of course

    • you are good man.very helpful for us

    • Thanks for this!

    • +1

Champion. I was about to stuff around trying to edit it in Notepad++, but saw you'd already done it.

It took me a while to figure out that "Save settings" doesn't apply them - you have to then click "Apply" to actually use them.

      • Thank you! I'm so glad you posted this comment.
I updated all the settings to make mine a WAP, then disabled my other WiFi to check it.
ARGH, IT'S SSID IS STILL DD-WRT AND AN OPEN NETWORK?!

Got it all working now and my WiFi range is so much better and stronger, thanks OP!

  • Will this perform better than a WRT54G2?

ie. stability (most important), wireless signal, speed?

  • Ordered one for delivery. $19.92 in total.

Too many times I've gone to their stores and they either haven't set aside my order and sold it, or never had stock despite what the website says.

    PCcasegear FTW

  • When I first got the email from MSY, it was described as a wireless "SWITCH". Had to dig a bit to ensure it was a router.

Wireless is great on DDWRT (transforms this from appalling to great)

Wireless: The STOCK wireless is atrocious. I upgraded from the shipped 1.02 (2010) firmware to the 1.03 and it was no better.

Installed DDWRT, vast ==>>>> VAST < ===== improvement!

Stock wifi was patchy more than a few metres away. DDWRT, at default transmission power, is now steady and usable throughout and is at least now in the same ballpark as a Netgear WNDR3800.

Bargain at $11 IF you flash DD-WRT.

  • Awesome bargain but getting through the GUI in DDWRT is slow on this router.

  • $11 is about what a dlink is worth

    • you're thinking of Belkin or TP-Link. dlinks are usually pretty average routers with reliable results. This model does have some issues like dropouts though.

  • Got mine up and running on stock firmware. Haven't got the flaky wifi yet.
Can anyone confirm after the flash they could get 300mpbs?
Mine is sitting nicely on 130mbps as max.

  • I've never tried this DD-WRT , but would it allow me to configure this as a wireless bridge?

    • yes, it will let you do basically anything you can think a router could do. thats why so many people love it.

      • thanks nosdan.

Sure sounds like a good deal then once you whack that on it

  • Anyone using DD wrt with this as a wireless bridge? I follow all the instructions on the ddwrt site http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged and it seemingly works ok, I can access my network through wlan , but when I get to step 28 and I change th e operating mode to router, I can no longer access the ddwrt dashboard at the same address any more and end up having to do a hard reset! Had to do twice now! Any idea what I could be screwing up?

    • +1

ive only ever used them as clients not client bridge, whats doing the routing if you have it bridged? have you tried doing what you need in just client mode?

ill be out all day, but if your still stuck later on ill give it another shot in helping you out

EDIT: also if you can supply some more info on what your trying to do, what your trying to connect and how, people will be able to help you a lot better :)

      • Basically I have a fritz.box modem router at 192.168.178.1. I followed the instructions to set up the dir632 as a client bridge, to which I'm plugging in a pc to the lan port. I do manage to get it to a point where on the pc I can access the fritz admin page at 192.168.178.1 as well as the new client bridge which I set up at 192.168.178.19. Set dns and gateway to 192.168.178.1. On my fritzbox added 192.168.178.19 as a manual address on my network . at this point I have no trouble accessing files on my network. Didn't check if I had Internet. Then I do steps 19-26 and I can no longer access admin pages for my fritzbox or the client bridge at those addresses above. Then I have to hard reset and start again at 192.168.1.1. Any ideas? Thanks :-)

        • +1

Contact me if you want a config file for CLIENT-BRIDGED.

The DIR632 router will be in the same subnet.
All clients cable attached will DHCP from the main router.
Internet and LAN access for clients.

It wasnt too hard to set up from defaults.

        • +1

Thanks alxr, greenpossum nosdan, I think I worked it out now though!

I did use client bridged, and I managed to get internet working by setting Wireless->Basic Settings->Default GW Mode to manual and adding my primary router's address.

I then had an issue where it wouldn't detect my media server running on my pc (that is connected to the dir632), despite being on the same subnet, and being able to ping it from anywhere else on the network.

I found some others having issues like this on the ddwrt forums, if anyone else comes across it, try downgrading to ddwrt build 17967. Worked as soon as it booted up, with the same settings I had on the latest build.

    • I have the opposite problem. I'm trying to use this as a client router in dd-wrt, but somehow the wired clients (tv and desktop) are getting assigned IP addresses from my adsl modem directly. They are not able to access the dd-wrt firmware page, nor are they being assigned IP addresses from ddwrt's DHCP server, ie. they are effectively client bridged.

Wireless clients on the other hand are within the dd-wrt subnet and can access the firmware page. However, ddwrt is not able to get a DHCP lease from My modem and thus the wifi clients do not have internet.

And yes router is connected to the modem through the WAN port. My Workaround has been to have ddwrt have a static WAN IP to the modem. This way it is working as a client router, but it doesnt really Solve the initial problem.

    • +1

@spa: Did you continue with step 29 and access DDWRT at its final address, the one in your main subnet?

      • Yeah I think I got the steps mixed up in my post above, but I set up ddwrt at 192.168.178.19 which is in the range available on my fritzbox and I've set it up to always assign the ddwrt box that specific address on my fritzbox (should I have done this?) , but for some reason at some point I can't access it any more.

        • +1

Why not assign DDWRT a non-managed address outside the dynamic range? If DDWRT is using a static address it won't be requesting a dynamic lease, and furthermore the Fritzbox may refuse to communicate with hosts within the dynamic range that it did not get a lease request from.

        • I see.. Thanks I'm going to have a look into this tonight!

    Guys,
Just a quick feedback on this little gadget, bought it yesterday flash it with DDWRT, changed my Telstra CG3100D-2 to dump bridging mode, connecting this guy to the back of Telstra modem, works like charm. Very easy to setup, superb performance on wifi (not comparing with $200+ routers), VoIP and HD streaming. Absolute value for money. Bonus was 8 Port, whatever device that is next to this guy gets wired connection and wireless is mainly used on mobile devices such as smart phones and for tablet.

    • 86 Mbps?????????!

  • +1

Great - Picked up one this morning from Cheltenham. Now to wait for a deal on a wireless N PCI-e card

    • Just realised I should have got two and used one as an access point. Doh! I guess I will see if they are still doing the deal on monday. Had heaps of stock so I guess they will.

      • I,ve just tried for five hours doing just that…

The range is really really bad. I,ve got probably a less than 10 m between the two and it only works intermiitently…

I,ve got a preexisting ddwrt bridged setup which is basically bullet proof… I dont even remember the ip addresses for the devices to login. Plug it in and locks onto my network…

I cant say the same for the dir632s.

      • +1

Just place an online pickup order before the "deadline".

  • Anyone trying to install openwrt instead?

  • Sorry if I missed something but I managed to secsessfuly set up a "client bridge" however this does not transmit wireless only wired.

So I found that "repeter bridge" seems to do everything with the wired and wireless and I found the steps BUT I can't find the option in the firmware, does this not have the hardware to achieve this? Or am I missing something?

P.S. I can only do a wireless connection to the primary router that does not support dd-wrt.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hmmmm. Bought quite a few of these today.. They had heaps left at mitcham…

Install ddwrt …. on the first one.. And all went well… Then i
Thought i would upgrade my current router and client/bridges to these…

Hmmm the range and speeds on these is far worse than the stock wndr2000. And my ddwrt asus wl-520gc. And stock asus nt10.

Basically couldn,t get a good signal more than about 10-15metres apart.
Hmmm as a single router attached to my telstra cable modem… It worked reasonably…
Once a i tried a client birdge. … It was all fun and games. 5 hours later… And i,ve resorted back to my original setup.. Which is pretty much rock solid but speed limited…

I suspect i know why these are only $11….

    • How many is quite a few?

  • Hi. What is the power supply rating for this model?

  • Can anyone report back on on stock levels at MSY Ultimo? I've ordered but can't get there in the next few days…

    • just email them and ask if they have them and can put one aside for you. make sure you actually ask them to keep one aside tho or they will just tell you current stock and it may have sold out by the time you get there. pretty sure they hold things for either 24 or 48 hours after you ahve emailed them to put stuff aside

its how i always deal with them and its always worked for me.

EDIT oh and they will email you back usually within an hour or 2 to let you know and give you an order number etc.

  • Ultimo is out of stock, they said they would email me once more comes in,

  • To those who've installed DD-WRT on this one, what sort of wireless file transfer speeds are you getting? With Wireless-N 300Mbps broadcast, my wifi transfer speed between wired PC and wifi laptop is about 40Mbps. Thats awfully slow for an N router isnt it?

    • No gigabit ports, only 10/100. Depending on your signal strength, that's about the right speed. The highest I've gotten was about 55MB/s.

    • Well it depends how far away you are from the router…signal strength ….MOre info please

      • Wireless connected laptop is about 5 feet from the router. The PC hosting the file is connected via LAN cable, and the laptop on WiFi is on my coffee table in the same room. Laptop (Win8) shows signal as 802.11n at 72.2Mbps and Signal quality as 5/5. Seeing this, 40Mbps during file transfer seems reasonable tbh, but I'm wondering now why the connection is at 72.2Mbps at this distance when DD-WRT is showing TX rate at 300Mbps. I've turned off all other WiFi and cordless devices in the house for now.

There are two other WiFi networks in range on my channel 11 though (I live in a unit, this place is packed with home wifi networks all around). I wonder if that could be it.

    • Like i said before my asus wl-520gu (54g based unit) with dd-wrt connecting to an 300n router gives me much better range and speed compared to the dir-632 running dd-wrt.

Either the wl-520gu are fantastic unit … Or the dir-632 are just crap. Its hard to know..

  • Picked one of these up from slacks creek on friday as a gift for my folks. Use it to patch some WiFi holes. Works a treat although occasionally jumps from 270 Mbps to 1 Mbps. I think its the concrete walls or the stock firmware playing silly buggers.

  • "Ordered" saturday arvo for pickup at NM, haven't heard anything, but I guess that's normal for MSY's completely crappy customer service.

    • +1

I done same thing but different store i got email next morning very fast for me

      • yup same with me, elizabeth SA store

  • +1

Finally set mine up- using DDWRT seems to work very nicely. I don't think it can be beaten for $11. Upgraded from 54G and definetly seeing a big difference

  • Anyone order these before the promotion finish and not get their order fulfilled?

    • I ordered this on Sunday night from the Brendale store, but next day got email they were out of stock so couldn't fulfil the order. I emailed them back to check if Slacks Creek had any in stock, they said to email them directly and ask. I did and they said they too were out of stock but were ordering more and would honour the $11 order made with Brendale. They sent me an email on Wednesday to say it was ready for pickup, and I picked it up Thursday for $11.
