Always good to see CPL deals. Not a fan of green drives but nice price for a basic PC…

Hanging out for another i7 4770 deal :)

    • +1

It has a SSD drive as primary, and green drive as secondary

    • Excuse my ignorance but what is the disadvantage of green drives? More energy efficient but slower I'm guessing?

      • +5

Basically this yeah. They're generally pretty slow. I use two green drives currently though and cant really fault them, but neither are my boot disk.

      • +1

They're fine for storage but useless as a primary partition to run an OS or frequently-used applications from.

        • +3

I disagree entirely. I don't really have a problem with the wait on these drives, yeah if you're constantly loading new files or playing intensive games which are frequently accessing files they probably aren't ideal, but if you're just writing word documents, never shut your computer down, they are fine…

        • Well you don't have a problem with it, fine. But that is subjective; I've actually used 5400/5900RPM drives as primary partitions before and even the difference between them and 7200RPM drives is very noticeable.

Regular PC maintenance chores such as antivirus scans, defragmentation, copying/moving files, downloading large files, installations, browsing through large folders full of thumbnails or large .mkv files, etc… become painstakingly long tasks. Never mind playing games.

Agree with Amar - green drives blow chunks.

Try loading BF3 maps on a single green drive vs a 7200rpm drive vs an SSD.

The wait times can be double on the green vs the 7200rpm and doubled again for the ssd.

        • +1

If you read my comment you'll notice i specifically referenced intensive games as a no no….

I have a WD green for my storage of files and photos, and another 3tb WD green for my media which are pretty much all 720p MKV's. They play perfectly fine, thumbnails immediately…

Don't get me wrong, theres a speed difference. Theres a reason i upgraded from 7200 to SSD for my boot drive, but for general storage, using WD green drives is perfectly fine.

People on ozbargain need to remember that not everyone is a computer geek obsessed with the very best. Some people just want a decent cheap computer that just works.

      i disagree

the new model green drives are really fast, check crystalmark disk benchmark scores for real world speeds

  • Good price, but don't like the generic 400W PSU. Hate the idea of putting a new Haswell chip on generic power.

  • Great choices for a budget build, although not a fan of the PSU

  • Upgrade the PSU and you've got a deal.

An i5 at 3.00Hz? That's some massive underclocking you've got going on there.

    • I'm sorry for my noob question but how is it underclocked it's a non k CPU. Still good a CPU at this pricepoint. That psu would probably make it a no go to add a quality gpu.

      • +2

        It's a joke - they wrote 3hz instead of 3ghz

        • +4

In qwertyson's defence it was a particularly bad joke.

        • Hahaha my bad guys, i geddit now.

    • Sorry, was a typo. Fixed now. Thanks.

      • Didn't realise it was a typo!

  • +1

Looks good, but as above I am not a fan of generic PSU/case. Slap in a GPU and you would have a decent budget gamer

  • how much is shipping cost to Melbourne ?
is there a pick up option?

    • Hi superkieu, you can pick up or $10.50 for shipping.

  • Put in a better PSU, remove DVD and HD, I will be interested.

  • Hi,

How much would is it shipping to Coffs Harbour. Also, how is it for a copy of Windows 7 to be included. I have emailed you, but i am yet to get a response.

  • Would this be able to play FIFA or Need For Speed?

    • With low resolutions and details, yes, at average framerates. For a decent experience you really want a dedicated GPU though, and I wouldn't put a dedicated GPU on the 400W generic PSU.
