MSI Cubi 5 12M Barebones PC i3-1215U $369 + Delivery + Surcharge (Redeem 1TB NVMe SSD & $50 Gift Card) @ SaveOnIT

190

Figured I'd chuck this up as it's a very capable little machine. Dual ethernet (looks to be 2.5G and 1G from photos on other sites), Thunderbolt 4, wifi 6 and Intel Xe GPU which supports AV1 decoding. It's a .66L machine that holds a 2.5" drive as well as NVME.

I wouldn't be too worried about it being an i3, it means the same number of P cores (2 cores, 4 threads) but half the number of E cores (4 instead of 8 in the i5/i7). Slightly less cache (10MB vs 12MB) and slower GPU, but it's not intended to be a gaming machine.

Surcharges: 1% card payment, 2.6% PayPal payment.

Doesn't come with RAM or drive, but there is a 1TB nvme + $50 egift card by redemption here - https://au.msi.com/Promotion/AUCubiNUCpromotion. Looks like Dec 31st is the cutoff and redemption by Jan 15th.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2024

  • I’ve got the NUC-11 i3 pro slim and it’s still going strong and low power.. love these machines.

    • If you want an i7 then it's significantly cheaper to buy this for $670(saveonit.com.au) and BYO RAM and drive. 512GB storage and 16GB RAM can be had for less than $100.

That said, the i5 version(saveonit.com.au) is only $498 as well. The difference between i5 and i7 with Alder Lake CPUs is very minimal(en.wikipedia.org), it's pretty much just the GPU.

    • Price beat at Officeworks for those models.

  • HDMI 2.1 with VRR ?

    • No, look at the bottom of the specs sheet, it says HDMI 2.0b
Edit: it does have DP 1.4 which I assume can do higher refresh rates on a PC monitor but not quite as much bandwidth as HDMI 2.1 (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

  • will this also have legal windows? (sorry new to this)

    • +1

      Unlikely. Its not mentioned anywhere.

    • +4

      Nope.
System is bare bones meaning byo RAM and storage, and subsequently OS.

  • Would this be a good machine for Home Assistant?

    • +3

I would assume it would be overkill if anything

      • +2

Agree. This is 100% overkill for home assistant. I have HA running on an i3-6100U, which is also overkill.

Or get this and virtualise HA, and run other systems as well.

    • +1

If you want something dedicated Home Assistant, then something with N95/N100 chip will be more than enough. That'll sip electricity. Should be around $200-300 depending on configuration / coupons.

  • Can you chuck an eGPu on this using the TB4?

    • +2

In theory, but I wouldn't. It's not a good gaming CPU with 2 performance cores and you take a big hit with eGPUs, it'd be poor performance. eGPUs are more aimed at laptops where there is no other option.

Buying a system from scratch I'd look for an ITX deal. The techfast one earlier with a 4060 was cheaper than this machine and what an eGPU enclosure would cost. And it had a full 6 cores (12 threads) and far better for gaming.
