If you've bought any iTunes music/shows they'll stream magically from the cloud with zero effort. Yes it's a bastard to stream local movies (eg. from NAS) to from outside of the Apple ecosystem. But it's a powerful little puck, compared to a crummy $40 android stick.
I stream Plex to it from my iphone / ipad … not quite as good as an appleTV native client but pretty dam close. ofcourse then you have an $x iOS mobile device cost as well as a $x apple TV and a streaming source for your local media .. but together its a strong and simple solution. Also I've yet to use a better faster version of iView then is in iOS natively.
I also have a western digital media live streaming box as drazenm does above and never use it, the interface is slow to move through and it needs to add files to my NAS when it indexes them and rename them to work .. heaven forbid it get a movie wrong and you have to go through and rename your files again… it sits unused now.
The video airplay mirroring is all i need from Apple TV, but $100……… still thinking
The Interface, AirPlay, Netflix, Hulu plus and HBO Apple TV is awesome, especially for the tech illiterate.
Apple TV now plays movies form NAS or media server, using plexconnect and plex media center. So its far better than WDTV.

I dont understand what is with the forcing of the apple tv,just because its an apple product???
i have a western digital media live streaming box, it goes for $100~120 (i paid $50 last Christmas for it and it feels too much still), its considered to be one of the best (considered, not is, a big difference) it supports much more video, audio formats to playback then apple tv AND it still gives me hard time play-backing media, most commonly sound lagging behind video playback, yes there are some settings to adjust but it almost never works, the official product support is very poor considering the amount of units sold. Sad to say but i have a feeling that a $40~60 android mini pc would do a better job, so many free media players on the google play market, no way your gonna come across a file that one of them at least wont have a solution for your problem.
