Stevia is awful. That's the rubbish they put in Pepsi Next… I bought a can once and threw it out, couldn't finish it.
It definitely does not taste like sugar…

    Also,

Artificial sweeteners used in these drinks are meant to give the taste without the calories but a major review of scientific studies suggests they may instead interfere with the body's normal energy regulation.

    And,

In 2012, FDA posted a note on their website regarding crude Stevia plant: "FDA has not permitted the use of whole-leaf Stevia or crude Stevia extracts because these substances have not been approved for use as a food additive. FDA does not consider their use in food to be GRAS in light of reports in the literature that raise concerns about the use of these substances. Among these concerns are control of blood sugar and effects on the reproductive, cardiovascular, and renal systems."

    • I had heard good things and then some time back I noticed stevia tablets at Aldi, tried them and they made my cuppa pretty much undrinkable. Very disappointing indeed.

For your newspaper article, I'll take that with a grain of salt. I'm rather cynical about reporters and newspapers of late. The wikipedia reference is more useful, I recommend everyone read it if they have concerns.

With respect to your quote "FDA has not permitted the use of whole-leaf Stevia..", this isn't whole-leaf Stevia being offered, so the quote does not apply to this deal.

The wikipedia article you referenced does say there are some possible worries, but also says "the bulk of studies show an absence of harmful effects" and "Japan currently consumes more stevia than any other country, with stevia accounting for 40% of the sweetener market". Japan has a lot of people, if there were noticeable negative effects, you'd think they would have shown up by now.

The wikipedia artice also says that the FDA has approved purified versions of Stevia. Which this offer apparently is.

I've applied for this before and it never arrived. However for those interested my wife has some of it in the cupboard so I've just made myself a coffee with it (first time I've bothered to try it).

Overall as a sugar alternative it's not terrible but I certainly won't be having it again, slight aftertaste and not as sweet as sugar. I love my coffee and it ruined it for me but its not like it turned it in to an international roast or Nescafé blend 43 (or 20 or whatever blend it was…. Maybe they should've kept trying….).

    Long story short rankings :

    Nescafé - 1
    Gloria Jeans - 4
    My normal coffee - 10
My normal coffee with Hermestas - 6

So not terrible but I threw it away and made a proper cup afterwards.

    • Same here. I applied last time but never received the sample.

  • How does it compare to CSR 'smart' white sugar with stevia?

    • Sorry I should've made it clear that I use white sugar normaly, not sure if 'smart' sugar is any different…

I wouldn't bother with these guys. They had it going last year, and no one ever got any samples. Also, this brand in particular tastes like crap.
