  • Add ELNA' EL2000 SEWING MACHINE @ $99 for VIP members

  • I can't see the Brother JS1410 in the catalog

    • That's because it's not in the catalog. See here.

  • Can anyone comment about these cheap sewing machines. My other half has been wanting a cheapy for awhile but I don't want something that's going to gunk up and catch fire at the first sign of a string knot (clearly I know nothing about sewing machines)

Anyway if anyone who knows more than me could share some thoughts I'd be appreciative. I'll try googling it tomorrow but doubt theres many sewing machine reviewers out there…

    • Absolutely no idea whether it has anything in common with the one mentioned here, but I bought a Brother SE-400 sewing & embroidery machine about 8 months ago on Amazon for circa $400 (nearest similar machine here is about $1200+) and I am VERY pleased with the quality & capability. Build-wise, it's a cheapie, but it works infinitely better than the Janome machines we had in high school in the mid eighties, and the old Singer my Mum had when I was a kid. I think that technology has probably advanced to the point that even the cheapies are likely fairly decent.

Just looked at a pic of the Brother JS1410, it's a similar shape & style, probably the same frame and plastic case bits as the SE-400 Im talking about. Obviously a mechanical model though (but for $100, who's complaining!!!)

Aside: if you're a geek, you MUST have a look a the clear-case demo sewing machine on display in some spotlight stores. The guts of these things are REALLY intriguing!!!

    • Even though I am just an occasional sewing machine user, I still have had a few different cheapies (<$200 from Brother, Jenome and Singer) over the years. None lasted very long. So last time I needed one, I asked all my friends who do use one regularly (I have quite a few of those!) to let me try theirs and also recomment one to me.

The best one I liked was Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118 (about $450) but that was out of my range. Luckily I found during december sales the Emerald 116 for $299 (down from $400) at Hobbysew (I understand they have it at this price during mothers day sales as well).

Love the machine. Feels very sturdy and well made (as compared to other machines in the price range). Includes all the basic things you may need including attachemnets I dont know what they are for! It even comes with a hard plastic cover which is great. Very happy with it and would recommend it as a good basic machine.

Oh, and regardless of which machine u end up getting, here's a tip from my friends : make sure you get good sewing threads like Metrosene or Gutermann… sewing would be sooo much smoother/better/easier.

      • And another tip, if you have a Hobbysew store near you, call and ask them if they have any display/demo models for the Viking for sale. If so, they can be had for less money and are still serviced and fully covered by warranty.

    • I bought a Brother GS-2520 at Target last time they had it on sale for about 170. RRP is ridiculously high though (about 350?).

I'm quite happy with it — bought this model instead of this cheaper one because I didn't want to have problems sewing heavy fabric like denim. So far so good, although I'd say about 5 layers of denim would be a bit of an effort to sew. I only use Gutermann thread though.

My sister bought the cheaper Brother and she's doing fine with it. She only uses it to hem pants though. She's had it for about two years.

  • Spotlight has the Elna EL2000 on sale for $99 (ends Sunday), however as they very quickly ran out of stock they decided to reduce the Brother JS1410 down to meet demand.

    Re the Elna EL2000:

    1. It's a new product.

    2. You can always order it - though you may need to wait a couple or so weeks to get it.

    3. You'll need to join their VIP club thingy (which is free).

    4. Here's some more info on it: Page 1, Page 2.

    5. My understanding is they are selling below cost - presumably to encourage people to buy their fabric etc.

    6. Spotlight have been selling a shed-load of them.

    7. I don't know which is better, but i suspect it's the Elna.

I seem to know a lot about this…

  • So the elna is the better machine then?

  • The seemingly identical JS-1400 (based on the Brother website) is on sale at Target for $99 if that's more convenient for people. Sadly, I found this out after buying it for $134 two months ago :(.

    http://shop.target.com.au/p/brother-sewing-machine-js-1400/P…

  • Its more pricey, but this comes up half price at spotlight occasionally

I really like mine, especially as its beefy enough to hem thick jeans. And I managed to figure it out on my ownsome despite having only 4 sewing classes in grade 8.

So I would say it suits a beginner but its has enough functionality to be useful as you skill up.

    • …despite having only 4 sewing classes in grade 8.

I don't remember grade 8, so i think i'm in trouble when i eventually get mine.

      • Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. I don't remember any of my sewing classes either (although I do remember parading around the class wearing a pair of shorts — while everybody else was prancing around in the culottes we should've sewn!).

  • So Singer is not the best brand for Sewing Machines now?
