You know the price of fuel must be overinflated in the first place to give this discount….

I wonder if this has anything to do with the phony a$$ news report I heard on the radio about fuel going up 10c per litre.
All because of the fall of the AU dollar against the US, and we arent even in the US oil market.

    • +3

Its already been shown that Coles Express is the most expensive fuel. They should make the fuel $10/L then offer $8.50/L discount so if you fill up 100L you save $850. Imagine how many pos votes that would get….

      • +1

This would bring the fuel industry into line with our Mobile Phone industry - $49 cap for $1000 of fuel!!!
Can't believe the public fall for this stuff ….

      • +2

Around me Coles express / Shell is normally 1-2 cents cheaper than 7-eleven and 3-4 cents cheaper than BP. so for me if I were to buy from non-Coles Express stores then I would be really getting slugged!

  • Thanks OP, yesterday afternoon at my local Shell/Coles the v-power was $1.78/lit !

I know this whole fuel thing is paid for instore already, but use it and the lowest point of the price cycle.

    • 100% agree. Work WITH the system, not against it, if you want to reduce your costs to the fullest extent

    • Can someone tell me what day of the week this is in Melbourne??

      • There used to be a consistent weekly cycle ages ago, but now it's hard to predict as it's over roughly ~2 weeks. Usually I use the ACCC site, and when the graph starts to level out a bit (ie. doesn't continue down at the same rate as previously), I fill up that day or ASAP. Note that the ACCC site is a day behind in reporting, so you need to be careful to keep notice & jump on it otherwise it suddenly becomes the peak price & you have no juice in your fuel tank :-(

Crap. Did my >$100 Coles shopping last night. :(

      Sucker

Go back to Coles today for a refund. Then repurchase everything for the voucher. Lol

This man deserves an official oz-bargain badge to pin to his shirt.

      • If I had only bought a couple of things, then maybe. Won't be the first time I've done something similar! But for a whole trolley full of stuff to get the extra 12 cents a litre to save $5 to $6, maybe not worth the effort as there were also items from the freezer!

        • remove that pin! now!

    • I did my Coles shopping last night AND I filled up my tank too. Double fail.

  • +2

When you see the prices go up you know the higher value coupons aren't far behind! Such a joke.

    • +4

You do realise that the AUD has fallen and oil prices risen? I think that may have more to do with the price of fuel going up than Coles running this promotion.

    • +5

Here's my reading from the graphs: Good time to buy if you're in Melbourne or Brissy, wait a few days for Adelaide, wait until Wednesday for Perth, wait a week or two for Sydney (unless you're lucky enough to find one that hasn't gone up yet) if you don't drive much / have a large tank. These are national promos and each state has it's own cyclical variations, no conspiracy theory ;)

Don't forget Terminal Gate Price, this is the highest it has been since early March. In Melbourne today there are many prices around 5 cents or more below the rising TGP e.g., so there are losses even before any discount offers such as this one are redeemed (albeit probably more than compensated for in your supermarket spend, unless you're not Coles or Woolies).

A friend works at a Coles/Shell service station and commented that he's forced by management to push whatever high profit margin product is on the counter. Two small chocolate bars for $3, a banana for $2, etc. He has to meet minimum performance targets of X extra sales per hour and there are secret shoppers who regularly check that the products are pushed. Why? Because at the low end of the fuel discount cycle the station is losing money on every sale after credit card fees are taken into account.

When I last bought fuel at Shell the guy behind the counter commented to his friend "it's like selling sand to Arabs" as it was the low end of the discount cycle and absolutely nobody was interested in inflated price bananas.

The staff of course hate this pushy kind of sales service and customers loathe it, but it's the only way for the station to make a profit when customers come in buying fuel below cost price and then grab another 5% off with ING.

Now service stations could of course make a decent profit on every litre sold and avoid the silly games, but all it takes is a neighbouring station to start lowering prices to attract customers and the discount cycle begins.

        • I don't remember ever being asked to 'upsize' when I go to pay at C/W, could be because I always pay for $5 of milk (same as supermarket price, woo) to get the extra 4c so they don't push their luck. There are 4 C/Ws closer to where I live than the nearest C/E so I don't bother with them.

        • You/he must live in an area where pricing is competitive then because in many places where Coles and Woolies dominate the fuel supply there is NO cyclical discounting, only vouchers. Not sure about Shell-Coles but at our local Woolies-Caltex they haven't permitted credit card fuel purchases for more than a year - because of the exorbitant fees being charged.

        • What are you on about? The 5% comes from ING not the petrol station!!

    • +2

If Coles and Woolworths are pushing petrol prices higher just so they can offer a larger voucher discount, why aren't Mobil, BP, and the smaller independents consistently 5, 10, or even 15c cheaper per litre? Looking at my local area every service station has prices within a margin of 2c (pre any discounts).

Are BP and Mobil enjoying huge profits because they're not handing back the profit margin on inflated fuel prices in the form of 16c fuel vouchers, or are Coles and Woolworths subsidizing the cost of fuel by the large profit margin on groceries? I think it's the latter.

      • Just fill up today, undiscounted price selling at 144c at Coles, but 138c at Woolworths. I am in Doncaster East. Better do your homework.

        • The vouchers are valid for a month so customers can choose the best time to use them.

I drove this morning through my suburb and noticed BP at 139.9, Mobil 139.9, Shell/Coles at 139.9 and Woolworths 138.9

  • +3

I don't know how the Coles one works because I have never used it, but I know with the Woolworths fuel offers you typically get a month to use them so while the price is up at the pointy end at the moment (well at least they are in Sydney), it doesn't mean you have to use it now. You can wait a few days until it gets back to the lowest point in the cycle and then fill up with the discount. Use the web site link below to help you track prices around Australia and when best to fill. It's not 100% but a good guide.

If you're in Victoria I'd suggest the racv site instead. With added bonus that you can search individual petrol stations around your area to some extent. It also shows 'lowest price today' however I've yet to figure out how to find the location :p

      http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/racv/Internet/Primary…

      • I prefer the ACCC site only because it's easier to see trends on their graph. I'd forgotten about the RACV site, handy to see what the current price is in servo's within a suburb or 2 distance. Though it doesn't seem to include Coles/Shell servos in my area for some reason :(

    • +2

Coles is the same - it has an expiry, I think a month. BTW, thanks next time I will park my car with an empty fuel tank at the petrol station for a few days until the price drops.

    • +2

It's also good to remember that at Woolworths at least, they always take the highest discount voucher on the card first, regardless of when you got it. So if you've got a 15c one and a couple of 4c ones, then you're better off waiting until completely empty to make full use of the 15c ones.

ALSO, sometimes, with the special offers, it takes a couple of days to show up on your Everyday Rewards card, so you have to keep an eye on your account.

in my observation Coles express shell price for unleaded in many places in Brisbane has been at least 3-4 cent higher than woolworth caltex for a while now.

  • my local IGA is better value buy unleaded or lpg at any servo and take the receipt to them and spend over $50 and get 10c per liter off your shopping bill anyday.

    • +1

Nice one. Thats if you shop at IGA though - personally did find IGA more expensive understandably because they are all AUS products.

      • IGA are NOT all AUS products. What on earth gave you that idea?

    • At my local IGA you can take an already discounted fuel docket to thei supermarket and they eill firther discount the price of your shopping

  • -4

Did you guys know that the spent 8 cents in a $30 or more transaction is the most valuable deal.

All you do is buy $60 worth and spit them in two transaction and you will have two save 8 cents vouchers which is 16 cents all up and you don't need to spend the extra $40.

One thing is you can only use one at a time at the station.

    • +1

Price of petrol is now on 3 weeks cycle in my Coles servo. Therefore if you have 2 dockets (they usually expire in 4 weeks), you can only use one of the dockets, unless you filled up not in the lowest price cycle.

    • +1

if you can use only one docket at a time isnt that just 8 cents discount for one fill up?

    • +2

How is an 8c reduction "the most valuable deal" ?

You can only use one voucher per transaction - that is to say, you can not use 2 x 8c vouchers to get 16c off.

Surely if you are going to spend $100 then 16c per litre off your entire tank is better than 8c per litre off?
The deals happen regularly, so you can then get 16c off next time as well.

  • What I said was, you can only use the one of the dockets if you want to fill up at the lowest price cycle due to 3weeks cycle. You can fill up at mid cycle two times and use both dockets if you don't mind to pay a bit more.

Great find.. OP.. You beat me too it..

Add this with the 1000 fly buys points and an extra 10c/L discount

Get the wife to follow you into the service station. Fill 1 car with fuel, the other car 1/2 with fuel and full with gas.
Go in and split the payments with paywave and save over $40 like I did last time..

    • do they allow filling two cars with one docket/voucher?

      • +1

they dont care as long as it's within 150 litres

        • Seriously? I was in assumption that max 150 litres/vehicle.

        • yeah, it is clearly writen on the docket that it is valid for 150 litre per vehicle.I think I should give it a try..

        • I regularly fill up two cars (or one car and one bike) and get the discount off the total. I make sure to fill both from the same bowser and keep it under 150 litres

  • This works to about an $8 - $9 saving for my car.

  • Coles don't have a servo where I live, so they hand out $5 coupons for every $30 you spend.

  • Filled up 136.9 in Albany Creek (Brisbane) yesterday, plus got 2 Cadbury chocolate bars for 65c essentially, because they gave an extra 8c/l off.
Drove 15-20 min down the road and the petrol at BP Milton was 19c more, 155.9. And then the Shell at Chapel Hill 5-10mins later was also 19c more, before discount.
Crazy how prices are so different each side of town.

    • Fuel might be going up soon? Just filled my car up at Oxley for 139.9

  • +1

just keep raising that petrol price australia, coles could do 30 cents vouchers soon and they'll be selling groceries like no tomorrow, poor IGA and ALDI

    • Depending on what you want you can save far more shopping at ALDI than a petrol voucher will get you. IGA has been doing petrol vouchers for a long time.

  • +1

Did shopping tonight and total was $101 - just made it haha :)

The discount certainly helps as Premium is 163.9 here in Coffs Harbour (NSW).

  • Great deal. I can't use it this weekend though. I made two shopping trips to Coles last weekend to get two 10 cent vouchers. I think if I'm careful I can save more on two 10 cent vouchers than one 16 cent voucher.

  • I only shop generally once a fortnight to once ever 3 weeks. So was able to split up my grocery bill into 3 parts and get 3 vouchers. Handy if you were going to spend anyway.

  • Hi guys, this deal has been extended until the 18th July

Here's the full page Ad from today's Herald Sun

I know it's 1c less than the Woolies offer but Coles might be more convenient for some people.

    • Thanks, updated.

  • Deal is now 20c/L, your move Woolies…

    • I used my targeted flybuys offer today and only needed to spend $70 to get my 20 cent fuel voucher. I guess this is good for the people who had targeted offers above $100.

    • Woolies response seems to be an extension of the 17 cent offer til next Thursday 25 July. The Coles offer has a shorter time period but is a larger discount.

  • This bargain had ended. Coles started a new promotion for a different amount.
Shoulda opened a new post so people can see the new promotion, not change your old post..

    • I made an edit rather than wait for a new deal to be posted as there was effectively no gap between each offer and the difference in discount isn't that large. If a new post had been made then it would come close to dupe territory. I wasn't sure which option was more correct so I'm happy for anyone to disagree :)

  • oh no. today's price is $1.67.
wollies and coles must be smiling so many people shop $100 this weekends.
