Anaconda Fluid Boys/Girls Bikes - 12" for $39.99 & 16" for $51.99 + Delivery

60

Not worth the RRP of $99.99 IMO but $39.99 seems an OK price as the cheapest equivalents I could find online were around the $70 mark:

Boys 'Racer': http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Bikes-and-Accessories/Bik…
Girls 'Princess': http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Bikes-and-Accessories/Bik…

16" Models also available for $51.99 (normally $129.99)

Girls 'Princess': http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Bikes-and-Accessories/Bik…

I assumed pickup was OK but these may only be available for delivery… not sure sorry.

  • Similar models $48 and $58 at BigW . Not much different.
Anaconda sticker prices still a joke. Maybe worth checking if you live close by.

  • no pickup option on the website… add plus delivery to title…

These bikes have good and bad points.

The good is that, as far as I can see, they use proper ball bearings throughout. Some cheap kids bikes, 12" especially, use nylon bushings in the headset and crank (and sometimes wheel hubs) rather than bearings, and they are rubbish. These ones also have proper inflatable tyres, compared to some cheapies I've seen with solid sponge rubber.

The downside is that proper bearings are heavy. With a "normal" headset, bottom bracket (crank bearing) and hubs, you're close to the weight of a "normal" bike. Add in an absurdly heavy steel frame and other cheap (heavy) parts, and these things start to resemble a very sturdy anchor.

A basic adult mountain bike weighs about 13kg, a mid-range road bike about 10kg, a race-ready road bike can be down around 7kg. These kiddy bikes are quoted as weighing 11.5kg. That's not much less than the weight of the person who will be riding it. Equivalent to an adult riding a >50kg bike. It's going to be very hard work for them to pick up, or ride up a hill.

Also, these are designed to be ridden with training wheels. Training wheels are terrible things for many reasons (much better to start kids on a balance-bike with no pedals, to get the feel for steering to balance a 2-wheeled vehicle… most kids can progress straight from balance bike to pedal bike without using them). The seat is too high off the ground for the kid to comfortably reach and put a foot down, which is bad for learning balance.

$40 is reasonably cheap. But I got a 12"er from Aldi for $30 a year or so ago. Bearings throughout again, and better geometry for riding. That's what my girl went on to direct from her balance bike. Training wheels have never been on it.

  • I purchased one of these bikes from Anaconda for my son last time they were on special, and one for my daughter from Aldi. Both bikes are basically identical, right down to the assembly instructions. Both bikes have been through hell and are still going strong (2 years for Aldi, 18 months for Anaconda).

When I purchased the Anaconda one, there were 2 models available, one had the clip in training handle (pictured above) and one didn't. They were the same price and seemed to be the same SKU on their end. The ones with the training handle were the newer ones, so they are probably all that model now.

Look in the clearance section and the 16" girls model is $40 for the 2012 model. Looks identical to the 2013 one.
