"Summer Blocktacular Sale!

We're having an across the board block sale for the next few days. We haven't had a site-wide sale in a while, so we're excited to try it. This is different from recent sales in that customers can buy blocks as small as 50 GB and as large as 2 TB, all at discounted rates."

My affiliate link is below. It won't cost you any extra but it will help me to fix up my ageing computer.

  • These newsgroupdirect sales happen every other week.
But having said that, I've found them good in terms of speed & retention, so if you're in the market for their services, it's good deal.

  • Perfect timing. 500gb plan for $20 sounds good, should give me a little playing room.

  • Whats the advantage of this over torrent or downloading from filehost?
    Just curious

    • Its the NSA vs the RIAA watching you.

    • My sugestion would be to pay $9 and get 100gb block. Work out how to install SABNZBD+, then find a good indexing site , or if you want free, learn to use binsearch.info. You need to work out how to create nzb files, which is not super hard, but it is a little bit of a learning curve.

Once set up it craps on torrents for some mainstream content in terms of speed and reliabilty of content. Also secure so no worries about announcing your ip address to everyone like on a torrent.

    • You can download at 100mbit
      You don't upload anything
Usenet is SSL encrypted, only your provider could figure out what you are downloading, and they generally don't keep logs.
You aren't responsible for distributed copyrighted material. Torrents can send you to court or jail in the US.
Everything scene related is on Usenet faster then torrents
you can automate all your TV shows and movies to be ready when you get home from work.

And so much more.. even streaming.

      • I've found that new episodes and movies don't go on usenet as fast as it does on torrents. Also, a lot of fakes/passworded going around.

If you download a lot each month, I don't recommend a block account. Get an unlimited account instead.

        • It depends on your indexer.

I'm assuming because you are getting fakes/passworded files you are using a bad indexer.

Remember, just because its not on your indexer yet it doesn't mean its not on usenet.

It even often tells you, for example

Added to site: 1 hour ago
Added to Usenet: 3 hours ago.

        • I use a few indexers (same ones I've been using for years), and they used to be updated very quick when new stuff comes out. Not any more.

Maybe because I'm not using some premium indexer you have to pay for.

          What do you use?

        • dog

        • You able to send an invite?

        • if you invite someone you are responsible for that person… not worth it considering how important the site is…

          Sorry.

        • ok, np.

    • Whats the advantage of this over torrent or downloading from filehost?

Speed is faster and consistent (it will max out your connection and won't fluctuate, you will know precisely when your download is completed), you don't have to upload or share, or maintain any ratios. No need to beg for invites to private trackers. Don't need to leave your PC on all night to seed or risk getting banned.

Retention these days is 1000+ days (claimed). Meaning it is stored on the server for that long, and you theoretically should be able to get 3 year old stuff no problems. On a torrent, getting something that old there will be fewer seeds so the speed will be slower, if you can get it at all (will depend on what it is you're after and how popular.. if you're after something obscure on torrent that's a few years old, good luck finding seeders).

      Lastly there's incription.

There are downsides however. Lately there've been RIAA takedowns, which can't happen on torrents (though they can send you threat letters via your ISP). And also you have to pay for the service.

  • I use Alt.Binz with a UsenetServer account which is like $10 a month for unlimited downloads and 1175 day retention and use NZBClub to find my nzb files.

And I also use Extmatrix, Netload, Depositfiles etc. accounts via JDownloader which can work out more expensive if you buy multiple accounts or you could use alldebrid.

I highly recommend using any of those methods over torrents.

  • thanks just bought 500 gigs

  • +1

I find these prices still expensive.

100GB is $9 even after over 50% discount. I pay about that much a month for unlimited. These blocks are meant for low quota users that can make it last for months.

If you can't make your block last for multiple months, it's bad value, since unlimited accounts are so cheap these days.

  • Good indexing sites people are using these days? Sinve nzbmatrix was shutdown

    • dognzb but very hard to get invite .
      ginga daddy
      oznzb

      • dog is by far the best.

        • what do you like in dog over ginga (which I have)? Still miss nzbmatrix and looking for alternatives.

        • basically everything is better…

  • Got a block (500gb seems best value), and tried last night. Some very recent files that were indexed were missing, and given they appears to have been grabbed a few times with no neg comment, I am gussing other providers still have the files. Still ok for backup though. I will keep getting blocks on various providers although maybe I should just go back to astraweb.
