Skype Video Messaging Now Available to All Users - FREE Unlimited Use from Today (Save $5/mo)

750

Video messaging is now available to all Skype users.

It was limited to 20 free messages before a Skype Premium subscription for $4.99 a month was required for continuous use.

You can send and receive as many video messages as you want – completely free of charge. Video messages can be received and viewed on any platform or device running Skype.

We’re excited to announce that video messaging is now coming out of preview as a full-fledged (and free!) feature in :

  • Skype for Windows desktop,
  • Skype for Windows 8
  • Skype for Mac
  • Skype for iPhone
  • Skype for iPad
  • Skype for Android
  • Skype for BlackBerry.

Just like the millions of users around the world who have already previewed video messaging, you too can now record and share a personal video message, even when your friends and loved ones are not available. The best part is that they’ll be able to view your video message as soon as they sign into Skype. Skype Video Messaging is easy and convenient, and only the contact you’ve chosen to receive your message can view it.

While this can be a pretty handy feature, I'm not sure it's a 'deal' per se

    should be in the forums…

paid service - now free , qualifies as a deal

Im sure some people use this feature, maybe not the majority but i do feel some people would benefit from knowing about this offer, hence i posted it here

        It's permanently free though

Well, Skype is currently owned by Microsoft, so perhaps "available until withdrawn" is more correct. Remember Microsoft's "PlaysForSure" music?

Kudos to Microsoft however. I thought they had bought Skype to monetize it, so making a part of it free is a pleasant surprise.

        • +1

It's probably about reaching a critical mass of usage where they can then monetize it by attaching advertising to your video message somehow. Only once they reach x-million video messages per day can they then avail it to advertisers.

Much the same way as newspapers give away subscriptions (or sell them for very low prices)… it's all about circulation numbers for advertisers.

    who does video messaging anyway?

    • -6

A certain demographic of ethnics where technology develops

    Skype for Windows desktop,
    Skype for Windows 8
    Skype for Mac
    Skype for iPhone
    Skype for iPad
    Skype for Android
    Skype for BlackBerry

Glaringly missing is Skype for Windows Phone 8.
What are you upto MS ?

Actions like these would ensure that I go back to Android with my next smartphone purchase

Wow this is hilarious. They buy Skype and they still can't get the latest features on their own platform?

  • +15

And it's easy and convenient for PRISM officers as well. :)

    • +1

PRISM officers have that power in Australia too ???

But they do in Us where Skype (or Microsoft) is.

      • It all depends where the servers rest and where they intercept the traffic. If it goes through the US then they will take it.

It's easier to justify the spying of other countries citizens than its own, so they wouldn't really give a crap Australians complained about being spied on.

They can store upto 20 Terabytes of data a minute in the 1.7bn data centre they have built in Utah. They are capturing everything without really knowing how to search it and what to do with it all…. yet.

        • Same approach as OzB!

Store (buy cheaply/signup for free) and think later! ;)

      • have you seen what is almost finished building in Canberra?
basically just another arm of the NSA.

        • The one china now has access to? LOL

      • They are just watching our Asian neighbours from that little base known as Pine Gap…….honest.

  • How do I get this so called deal? Download Skype?

  • +7

Yawn,, there were always plenty of free services to do this even before.
    case in point - Tango.

    • Tango was/still great at video messaging well before skype made it a feature now.

I really "love" these discussions if it is a deal or not. It is definitely a useful addition to Skype (and I was not aware off that it is now free … so thanks a lot!)

  • Really nifty. Pretty cool stuff. I didn't even know it existed.

    • So do I.. Lol

I wish Skype/Microsoft spent 1/100% of their efforts to fix that stupid msn messenger integration!

  • +1

how is it any better than just recording a video and emailing? genuine question.

    • It's not, but it removes one step in the process and people like to be lazy (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

  • Useless feature. Never used it once. I'd just type an im or email em. always though its free. To charge is stupid for this.

    Sponsored by The NSA™

  • Any correlation between MS doing this and Google releasing Hangouts a few weeks ago, which has free video messaging/conferencing?

  • Tagged & Collated.

    Many Thanks,

    What about Skype for Linux?

  • does anyone know if skype can also do recorded msgs and the contact can hear it when ever they login? or anyone know of an andorid app that does? i think iphone has something like that.

I don't want to use too much data with video and taking is faster than txt.
    thanks!

If anyone can tell me a way of getting premium for $4.99 a month I'd greatly appreciate it. I only need it for occasional conference calls, and have only been able to find it for $10.99 a month. The half price cards at Woolies will come in very handy, but if I can drop the cost to half price again, it would be wonderful.
