  • or if you have overseas mailing address, you can join QFF for free using that address :)

    • You can but there are a number of downsides… you don't get a physical card which means you can't collect points at duty free / some hotels etc. Also you don't get (relevant) members only offers.

This isn't a bad deal. You can also get free membership before March 31st by applying for certain direct earn credit cards.

      • which members only offers are excluded?

        • Anything domestic you won't hear about for a start. And International offers too I guess. For example I initially signed up with my UK address and this meant all the members only offers I received were ex. UK and in GBP.

  • There is something wrong with the programming on this website.

Every time I try to sign up, I can an "Systems Error. Please ring Qantas Frequent Flyer Support Desk".

Qantas needs to fix the above website, because nobody can sign up.

    • I am having trouble signing up also…

Nothing against this posting - but I hate Qantas forcing to tranfer points automatically - there goes my choice!

Singapore Airlines provide the best value and I want to be able to chose where I want to transfer.

So Qantas want to charge the Aussies for a membership, but for everyone else it is free!

You just need to create a new member with some funky overseas address and as soon as you have created, you can go and update the address to an australian one and you get it for free!

    • thanks skinny. I don't have a credit card so I can't join for the original bargain. I booked a overseas flight via quantas and was looking for a way to transfer my points to a family member without paying $80 to join up as I don't see myself flying with quantas that often in the future. As a result I just joined with overseas address and immediately updated my details. I might not get a card but I can atleast trasfer my credits to my family member. Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate it.

Unfortunately this doesn't actually work in the long run. I spoke to Qantas about this when I moved to Australia from the UK. You could just update your address details but you are still left with an overseas account with an Australian mailing address. You won't recieve the membership card or full benefits. Also if Qantas find that you are an Australian resident with an overseas account they reserve the right to terminate your account. I have a friend who had been using her account for a number of years when she suddenly got a letter saying that Qantas had noticed she had not paid her $80 joining fee and that they were going to revoke all of her points. She pointed out that when she signed up there was no joining fee and so they admitted they had made an error, but it still shows that they do checkup on accounts and are willing to cancel points.

Just to make clear I completely disagree with what they are doing and think it's a disgrace they choose to charge only those who are most likely to make use of the scheme. Luckily for me I had a free membership coupon from my credit card and so I used that to change my account from an overseas to an Australian one.

Oh… and don't forget. Qantas are a memeber of oneworld so you could sign up for free with any of the other airlines FF schemes and earn points through them.

  • Don't worry, soon they will be giving away free membership to their loyalty program anyway. How can a loyalty program charge $80 for membership when you can get a flight within Australia for about $49 with other airlines.
