    • Looking at the latest Mac Pro, PS4 & Xbone… I think Industrial design going backward.

      • +1

The PS4 is launching cheaper than previously because:

        • adoption of third-party components
        • economy of materials (smaller overall size)
        • simple design

If you want something fancy-pants, they need to bring in creatives — the price will be higher. You could always mod your next console housing, there's hundreds of examples online.

Personally, I like the PS4 design. It's compact and understated. Then again, my focus would be on the software it's running :P

  • Have they announced AU pricing or are EB and all having a punt on it?

$549 sounds about right but I was hoping for $499.

    • Playstation AU announced the price of $549, Electronics Boutique and JB Hi-Fi shortly changed their place holder prices to that afterwards.

      • JB beats it by $1 at $548

        • HN beats it by $1 at $547

  • +1

it looks like a squeezed PS2 (original version)

  • I suspect harvey norman will want a piece of the PS4 action.

  • Dick Smith has the PS4 for $549. Seems the retailers are matching the updated RRP.

Harvey Norman has now priced the PS4 at $547. A whole $1 cheaper than JB.

    • $1 is alotta money!

you can go to the dollar store and buy something else!

      • +1

you guys missed a dollar in between: $549-$547=$2 ($1 additional bargain)! you now have to make another trip to the dollar store!

        • JB's price is $548, so no true ozbargainer would have ordered at Dick Smith.

Besides, I'm still waiting for the dollar store's EOFY sale :-)

  • I guess the PS4 will make for a cheap 4K blu-ray player when they eventually release the 4K TV support through a firmware update.

    • Always has been sony's strategy. Push new formats through consoles.

I dont think it will be the cheapest per se, since you can grab a bluray for about $99 now. Adding in new hdmi 1.4 shouldn't cost too much, reading bd-xl should be fixable via firmware.

      • Not a 4K blu-ray player though. Apparently the PS4 hardware supports 4K TV resolutions but they may release a firmware update at a later stage to support it. Much like when Sony eventually released 3D blu-ray support on the PS3 through a firmware update.

        http://www.stuff.tv/news/computers-and-consoles/news-nugget/…

        • oh no, I was saying you can probably get a bluray that has 1.4 and BD-XL capabilities for under $200-300. If you need a 4k player, buy a standalone player, ps4 isn't going to be as much value as the ps3 was.

It'll all be moot anyways, by the time 4k is gone mainstream, prices would've washed down by alot. I only know of 1 movie made available in 2k res, and videos shot with a 4k camera.

  • Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but you could also pre-order from Amazon UK, which is £299.31 delivered. $495 delivered. Since UK is region B, no blu-ray playback issues.

But then it's only $50 for Aus stock, which would have warranty. I'd probs get the aus stock for DVD playback also, because PS3 was dvd region locked.

    • You think you'd rather pay the extra $53-55 and get the Aus stock PS4 from HN, JB, Dick Smith or EB Games. No waiting for delivery either or potential warranty issues. Buy the PS4 locally and if it's DOA or has big issues can take it straight back to HN or other retailer for an over the counter exchange.

      • the YLOD ghost looms ahead :D

    • I'll end up with both a PS4 and XBox One at some point I imagine. Thinking about the regions, for me it seems like people buying both may find value in getting the XBox from a PAL/Region B region (AU or UK) since the games will no doubt be region locked, and the PS4 from the US.

That way you end up with both a Region A and B 4K compatible Bluray player and have the choice of local or overseas (UK/US) games for each console.

My only real concern with that is the warranty situation. Following the above, the XBox could be a local one but there's some advantage to sourcing a PS4 from the US if you plan to get both consoles.

MaiGawd. Sony have really done it!

EDIT - nvm scrolled through comments, missed that other link :(

  • The Aussie dollars tanking and the country is rejoicing

Better buy this now before it costs more than $549 after conversion

    • Weren't we at 1.06 not too long ago?

      @1.06 : US$415.97 = A$392.42
      @0.945 : US$415.97 = A$440.18

$50 difference.. Damn you Aussie dollar!!!

    • They don't charge us until the end of the year anyway so I don't think that's an issue for now.

  • For those who work at Maccas and wana buy the PS4, you can buy discounted gift cards on metime myBENEFITS.
    They include:
EB Games 10% off ($560 gift card for only $504)

Not sure but later on if they do the same bonus discount for EB Games, you can get 20% off (instead of 10% off) a gift card then use it to buy the PS4.
EB Games 20% off ($560 gift card for only $448).

(Note: EB Gift cards are bought in multiples of $40, I dont see any limit in it, & Valid for 12 Months)

So yeh.. this could be an alternative if you prefer to buy in Australia. So could save you around $46-$102 with $10 extra to spend.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2830/9012525924_811cc88f97_b.j… - The back of the PS4, 8 shape AC plug - So it kinda safe to purchase this.

I never import anything electrical overseas.

    • +3

Retail stores do it for you, derp.

    • Personally I import most of my gadgets from overseas. I think every phone/tablet (except the N7) I've had for the past 4 years has been imported.

      • I guess I should have been more precise. I meant the electrical appliances as I do not want to equip a transformer. After reading a bit more this device seems to be universal so yeah, it's a great price even with our dollar down.

        • Only thing you need to worry about is the region locking of your media

  • +1

    PS4 is already announced?
Omg…I cannot catch the pace of gaming industry already..
I thought PS3 is just open for sale for one to two years only?
    I felt I am old :(

    • +2

Ps3 has been out for 7 years dude…

    • +5

Quick dude you better finish your tiger woods 07 before they release a new one……

    • +2

You're not old, you have just been living in a cave. ;)

  • People are spending way too much time pondering the difference in the console price when the real issue is this:

    1 x PS4 Game:

    $60 USD

    or

    $118 AUD!!!!

    • +2

      No one pays that shit.

      • Dude, you'll be surprised how oblivious some parents are.

  • Got one!!, can always cancel before it is posted if AUD to too low, as they do not charge your card until it is posted.

    • I think the dollar should stay above 90c for at least the rest of the year. Might even get a little boost when Gillard is booted out.

  • So for now it seems Games will be Region free, but you wont be able to play your Region B(AU/UK) blurays on this….

  • First console to be hacked wins.
