your going to get mad DOF :P
im grabbing because i shoot local afl and cant afford the 400-600 which are double the price.

      • Plus the mad bokeh

I have the 85 and 35 GM enough to render beautiful Bokeh, I can only imagine this. Lol

        • +1

85 1.4 is super versatile and is a money maker

but seriously best portraits are made at 135mm, still better at 200mm and longer

          • @shabaka:

it's subjective, 135mm or longer are way too tight and rob context imo. i think people prefer it because you can just blow out the background without giving any thought to composition and framing.

If you look at many famous portraits they're usually taken with a standard lens, around 50mm. I recently got into 35mm focal length again and I forgot how good of a portrait focal length it is when you have a lot of background/context to work with.

For studio work, crazy telephoto lenses most definitely do not belong there due to space constraint, it would have to be a standard-ish focal length.

      • At 300mm, is the DOF from f/2.8 worth it over f/4?
Because the 70-300 f/4 version is only $1700

        • You mean the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G or 70-200 f4? Sounds too cheap for a f4 zoom at 70-300.

        • 300 2.8 renders beautiful bokeh. creamy. 85 and 35 can't even hold the candle

but 300mm isn't too versatile. and bloody expensive

Canon shooters are spoilt by availability of old EF 300/4L IS which is a stellar glass and beats 200/2.8 at bokeh. but once again not too versatile. also if you got money and get lucky, 400/4L DO is also there. DO gives it a bit of onion ring in bokeh but still super pleasant. my best portraits were shot on 300/4L IS

          • @shabaka:

300 2.8 renders beautiful bokeh. creamy.

has more to do with the DoF than anything, much shallower on the 300mm.

Also, 300mm is a highly corrected sharp lens, i doubt it has good "rendering" or beautiful bokeh IMO. most modern lenses don't.

even though highly subjective, but smooth, beautiful bokeh is often a result of poorly corrected spherical aberration. you get weird stuff like halation (especially close up), crazy flare, busy bokeh, undesirable CA on bokeh balls etc, and lenses are usually not as sharp.

can still be mitigated but they'll never be as sharp as lenses that actually control them. A couple more modern example i could think of that has good rendering/bokeh: Nikon 58mm, Sigma 45mm, Leica 50mm Summilux ASPH.

i've tried shooting local league footy with a 300mm and find it's not long enough. if your using a crop sensor you should be able to get some decent angles from the wing position.

        • The lens is also designed to go with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters and one of Sony's high-res camera sensors (for cropping). With these teleconverters, the aperture is 'converted' to a still reasonable F4 (1.4x) and F5.6 (2.0x).

          • @Davesday: Yes, as mentioned with a crop sensor it should be enough from that field position. Otherwise you would need to invest in a TC. I founded also needing a 70-200 to cover any close up action.

        • ive been currently using 70-200gmii on sony a7rv and cropping in its been great . not quit far enough when they other side of field though but then heat haze has stuffed any shot up at that distance anyway when i used the 200600g
300 with the 1.4tc during sunlight will be great for me

      Gorilla Tape

  • This must look massive mounted on the A7C/A7C2.

    • +1

it's a tad lighter than 70-200 2.8 and better balanced (weight more towards the camera end)

I'd recommend price matching at Sony to avoid the Digidirect credit card surcharge.

I wish Sigma would make a version of this. It would be less than half the price

    • i think Sigma's focusing on pumping out niche products, they're working on a "unique" telephoto lens atm.

      • This is a niche product though. I had both the 120-300mm art and older 300mm 2.8 sigma lenses, they could just update those for mirrorless

Digidirect still haven't tried to warn me about their data breach. combined with the lying about stock and 3 month delays on product orders i think i'm done with this store.

Yeah they don't consider any of the following 'sensitive': Name, email, address, date of birth and phone number

      Don't support them.

      • Agreed, taking away my positive vote.

    • damn didnt know about that

    • yea, i only found out a fwe days back when i was doing a dark web scan on chrome.

i still bought a bag from them yesterday tho, 50% off.

  • Can these be Brodened?
