  • Good deal!

Undecided between this and the GX1, are people who bought this last time happy with the camera?

    • +5

      Panasonic DMC-GX1 wins
      * pic quality (V1 is much noisier)
      * fantastic enthusiast controls / direct access buttons and user-assignable function buttons (V1 has far too much menu-diving in comparison)
      * ability to manual focus on the lens barrel is faster than V1's inability to do it without pulling up controls first
      * has a finger-bouncable flash that is integrated more conveniently than the flash accessory here, but it can only tilt, not swivel, and it's pretty weak at low ISOs
      * standard hotshoe allows many full-sized optional flash units to be used (Nikon V1 has proprietary accessory port)
      * sheer megapixels (16 versus 10)
      * ability to turn off image preview between shots so you can return to the scene quickly, unlike the V1 whose only remedy is to half-press the shutter to return more quickly to the scene after a shot is taken
      * general feel in the hand is better to me than the blockier and less grippy V1

      Nikon V1 wins
      * has a viewfinder (indispensible when in the sun and other situations like simply wanting to be more staedy)
      * viewfinder and LCD are both better in terms of pic quality / response
      * bundled flash in this deal is more flexible (can tilt and swivel) and is more substantial than the DMC-GX1's
      * despite the noise grain, pics are well-detailed
      * high-speed modes can be useful and gimmick modes may be useful to some
      * better for video than the DMC-GX1
      * silent electronic shutter can be chosen
      * nice chunky battery with good capacity

      • +1

        who wins?

        • +1

          Depends on your priorities :)
          I have both.

If I could only choose ONE, that's tough…because the GX1 has no viewfinder and I find that essential for outdoor stuff.

On the other hand, the GX1 has better pic output. I'd prefer the DMC-G3 over both of them, but the Nikon V1 brings some goodies to the table too, especially if you haven't experienced the joys of better lighting with the tilt-and-svivel bounce flash, which can be had for cheap here and whet your appetite for better units, but at the cost of future expansion with that proprietary accessory port (something which the Panasonic doesn't suffer from. If or when you decide you want a full-sized flash unit, you can take your pick from many manufacturers).

V1 is simply the better video machine, but the Panasonic is far easier for an enthusiast to use and get joy from in daily pic-taking (button-wise) and the (undocumented) finger-bouncable flash might be good enough for you…it's certainly integrated with less bulk than the V1 here and you can't leave it behind.

Assuming you want to expand further, lens choice and pricing should be looked into as well.
          Tough one :)

It depends on what you find more important.

        • Damn, I missed the black, or would have been pretty dam tempted. Just curious cheepwun, how do you find the autofocus of v1 in bright conditions. I thought it's autofocus when bright, particularly for moving objects, was supposed to be best in class for mirrorless?

    • +2

Yup, very happy with it, but still learning the features. Took it to Japan and it was good for sunny/overcast conditions and also at night. The night time shots were good even without the flash (it's quite powerful and I didn't want to annoy the shoppers). The electronic view finder was really handy, and so was the ability to quickly change exposure compensation.

I can confirm that Nikon does eventually process the application for 2 year warranty. Had to wait a couple of months but it did happen.

    • Yup I'm happy with my purchase. It's a good camera quality wise but don't expect too much from it though.

  • Yaow. That's a very good deal.

  • Will they give this price instore? I have a $200 gift card but they don't accept gift cards online!!

  • I know it's a very different camera… But how does this sit in comparison to the Canon Powershot S110?

    • I think it's better.

I was tossing up between the Canon S110 and Nikon J1, I chose the J1 - been using it for a week, it's mad! Bought it because I needed a more compact camera for travel.

From what I've heard, apparently the V1 is better than the J1.

      So imho V1 > S110

However the S110 is much more compact, and easier to use I guess :)

      • Just wondering, did you consider the Fujifilm X10/X10s?

        • +1

I did, but it was way out of my budget :(

Edit: Sorry I meant Fujifilm X100S
Not X10… not sure what that is! :P

Edit #2: My Mistake, I in fact did. That was the one going for ~$370 on Kogan? I definitely did, however preferred the S110 to it.

Sorry that my comments are all over the place, my mind is not working! Meant to be studying for exams lolololol never happening…

Edit #3: The retro look of the Fujifilm is awesome though, some people may get it just for that!

        • Yeh… The Fuji does look awesome. Just that little bit over my budget though. I've got JB down to $305 for the S110 which I'm pretty happy with.

        • Oh wow! That's good man (S110) for $305. I think you should get it if you're after a compact, reliable and quite straight forward to use camera :)

  • +4

pretty incredible that you can shoot 4K raw video on this (albeit only for a couple of seconds): http://www.eoshd.com/content/9806/nikon-v1-shooting-4k-60fps…

  • +1

Damn! Excellent deal, kinda regret buying my Nikon J1 Twin Lens Kit last week….

    • +1

You have great reach with that telephoto; I wouldn't be so sad; it's a good deal. Here we have a flash accessory but no good zoom to bring distant objects close.

You still have good glass at a bargain price, and the glass lasts.
      Both good deals anyway.

      • -1

Haha true, I doubt I'd use the flash accessory too often anyway.

    • How much did you pay? Got 1 today from DS for $168.

  • Camera is showing as out of stock now.

    • out of stock for the black one, but the white one is still in stock

      • Yep, sorry forgot to mention it was the Black out of stock.

      • Good for a laugh.
Ted's have very limited stock in white at the bargain price of $1,099.95
        http://www.teds.com.au/nikon-v2-10-30mm-vr-white

        • How come that one says 14.2 megapixels?

        • Ted has been hitting the bottle ;)
They have the v2 description with a pic of the v1 (and heading of the V1).

  • +1

    ORDERED.

  • +1

    Sweet deal. Very tempting.

  • +3

If you can find it in store, DSE is selling the V1 Black Twin Lens Kit for
$204 (50% off their last price of $408). Their system code is XG3558 if you want to call around for it. At this price it is an absolute steal. I bought the last one from DSE Belconnen, ACT.
Note: although they have taken it off their website, some DSE still have stock in store.

    • +2

At that price, you couldn't refuse.

      • And to think I was pleased with $320! That's outstanding.

        • The thing is, the cheapest I can find SB N5 Speedlight Flash is $219 not including shipping.

So in a way, this deal is pretty awesome too!

        • pretty sure there is nil stock in melbourne

        • My order has it included, I think it sold out 50 minutes after.

With the flash it's a great deal, without it, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

    • Saw a white V1 twin lens kit at my local DSE (display model) for $300, not $204…

If you guys had the choice, would you get the 30-110mm telephoto lens, or this SB-N5 flash?

      • depend on your shooting preference.. I prefer the flash for indoor shooting over telephoto..

also the price of the flash itself (if need one later) more expensive than buy the tele lens :-p

    • Damn!!! I purchased one that was not on display from the Tuggeranong store for $409.50 on Saturday. I had the choice to go to either the Belco or Tuggeranong store but thought I would go to Tuggeranong as the camera was in the box and not on display like the one in Belco. The salesperson in Cvic did not tell me that the one in Belco was going for $204 thought! How could you go wrong for the price.

Out of curiosity, when you did buy the camera from the Belco store?

  • do not have flash in stock

    • Confirmed. Insufficient inventory of flash unit.
Looks like it's all over folks (if you expected the flash unit bundled).

  • Ordered white one for missus
    Thanks OP!!

  • +1

there's still stock of the flash unit.

  • +1

I brought the Sony nex7 last year prior to my trip to Europe thinking I sell it considering I have 3 different lenses that I don't use and this seems like an amazing price… Any thoughts? Buy this?
Pricing on other lenses for this one?

    • +1

Sell it. I sold my DSLR gear recently cause I just don't use it enough. In the market now for a compact interchangeable. Missed out on the Pentax Q:( that would of been perfect!

      • brought this camera had a play around with it, packed it up and returned it.
i think my sony nex7 is wayyyyy better..
got a refund on it from david jones no questions asked.

  • +2

It comes up as no stock for the black camera, and no flash for the white one each time I try to order ( probably not a bad thing for me, I have too many cameras anyway )

  • -3

very tempting, but i'd spend a little more and get the nikon 1 j3

  • Bourke Street (MEL) has stock for 359, white camera with black flash

  • +1

Gave it a crack and went down to the Adelaide CBD store as I'm here for work. They have plenty black ones in stock with free flash and even were happy to do the extra 10% off price bringing it down to $323.10… so I caved in and brought one nice :@)
Now off to find a bigger lense for this toy!

    • +1

nice - btw it's lens not lense (plural is lenses) :)

      • thx mr spelling bee!

  • its here. :)

    yeahhh

    • Delivered already? Impressive!

  • Just picked up a black unit and black flash in DJs Chatswood - they still have stock of black and white units and black flashes.

Mentioned extra 10% off offered in Adelaide store as per mentioned on OzB, so salesguy gave it no sweat. Price down to $323.10 :D

Just over the $300 TRS minimum too woohoo

  • Hornsby David Jones still has stock as at midday sunday of white and black and the black flash, if anyone was looking for stock.

  • +2

I grabbed one of these just yesterday from the Adelaide CBD store. They still have reasonable numbers of the kit in stock but the flash units are running out. Best watch this if your still thinking about getting this deal in the near future.

As for the camera… If your not a D-SLR pixel peeper, your gonna love this camera for the price. I might be as bold to say the this is one of the fastest/snappiest cameras I have ever used. The auto focus is truly amazing.

Need a spare battery for your Nikon
    D600
    D7000
    D7100
    D800
    D800E

This V1 uses the same and you get the charger. No brainer deal for me :)

    • Was that a white body or black body. I didn't realise same battery as the dslrs.. that makes it more tempting! Just got to get a friend in adelaide to do me a favour…

  • Seems DJs have taken the deal off their website. Looks like its all over. Probably due to flash units being out of stock. I got the black version.

  • The deal for 359 in shops is still active. I picked up a black one (with flash) at the Melbourne CBD store - though I couldn't get the extra 10% off :( They said still got a bit of stock left too.

Oh, and the web link still works for me too.
