  • Is that model better than this $79 one at OW?
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

    • The OW one is the older model, probably the same drive internally though. Not sure about these newer ones, but that older one was prone to overheating due to crappy case design.

      • Okay, thanks!

  • Got this last time from Dicksmith when it was on special for $79 and it failed within 3 months and was used once to backup about 1.5 tb of data.

Would not let me read data back off it and made clicking noises.

I used a hdd tool and found the actual model used inside, STDM001 from memory, and found heaps of negative reviews when i googled it.

I took it back to Dicksmith and they did refund me which was really good on them.

    • sorry, the part number that I googled for the hdd is st2000dm001

If its the same inside these ones, beware !

  • not a great price, these were selling from several sources for $79 a month or two ago (wish I'd held off for the $179 4TB drives, similar $/GB but less power/cables)

  • Does this one work with MAC??

    • I can't see why not since the drive uses USB. You'd probably need some NTFS tool so you can mount the NTFS file system on the Mac operating system.

Here is a guide which shows you how to enable writing to NTFS in Mac OSX. There is a free utility called NTFS-3G which does it and supports Mac OSX Snow Leopard. Any newer Mac operating system and you need to use OSXFuse driver instead which is noted in this guide.

      • Surely far easier to just reformat as exFAT which will work on OSX and Windows XP SP2 and above. Although might have issues with devices like TVs.

        • Yeah probably is quicker. And yes may have issues reading exFAT with TV set top boxes and PVR devices etc although most of them can read NTFS. So if you want to connect the HDD to a set top box or PVR avoid exFAT.

  • +1

The previous 2TB Expansion USB 3.0 model is selling for $50 at Australia Post.
