SSL & VPN? Is there much point?
I wonder what binary retention is like?

    • +1

      They say it's 1750 days.

Well if you every use torrents there is a use for VPN's or tricking sites to think you are else. As for SSL it's handy to stop your ISP from knowing what you are doing.

I just grabbed myself an account. 10 bucks is less than I was paying at Newshostings and they are both highwinds resellers :)

      • 1750 day will only be txt
sorry I meant SSL + VPN (together)

        • They say binary retention is 1750.

  • $9.99 is the same price as buying the VPN service from Octane, for that reason it doesn't seem too bad.

    • they also have 3 server in australia

      • For VPN, not news. Not sure why it would be handy to have a VPN gateway server in Australia for us

        • One reason if you travel overseas and you may want to access some au restricted sited such as abc video streaming and other sites

        • And some e-tailers dont allow you to use your credit card from overseas IP addresses
One example is "The Iconic" store

I've been using their $5 Unlimited usenet for years and it has been amazingly good.
(I have a block account from Astraweb, but it rarely gets touched)

  • First provider i ever used. After downloading 1-1.5tb on the unlimited plan they limited my speeds.
I asked them about this but they denied it and told me to cancel my account.
Good only if you plan on keeping your downloads to LIMITED

    • Unlimited is never unlimited to some companies, just s sales gimmick , they must have a fair use policy, did you read the terms and conditions when u signed up?
Like some phone/Internet companies, they say unlimited but their is actually reasonable fair use.
I dont know about tpg, but im on their unlimited ADSL plan and its true unlimited

    • -2

Well.. Considering the majority of download quotas in Australia are under 1TB, I'd think most people would be safe.

And how do you mean you downloaded '1-1.5TB'? That's a pretty damn large range there.

    • I've had thundernews for around 1.5 yrs and I've had no major issues. I dont downloadload terabytes of data, more around <500GB at most 750GB a month (housemates and I).

But good to know there is a limit I'll keep in mind

  • yes TPG is real unlimited I never read any fair use policy but 1-1.5tb is not an earth shattering amount

Bluray ISO, Xbox 360 ISO, PC games, MKV, HD TV shows etc

    • Just to clarify, you're negging because they limited your speeds after downloading terrabytes of pirated (illegal) material? Oh ok.

      • im negging to warn others that the unlimited tag comes at a potential shaping speed cost
and i will maintain my innocence in any court of law
usenet is used for more than linux distributions and i do enjoy downloading backups in case my originals fail

        illegal does not equal wrong
and legal does not equate to right

        • +1

          "illegal does not equal wrong"

I'm curious to see how you would fair in a court saying that. Good luck.

        • Probably badly, because its immoral to say point out any flaws of morality. Or the justice system.

    • if i didn't have 3 free VPN accounts (through promo's, usually paid subs), id only be getting this for the VPN.

    • Well it actually is.

They have to pay for the bandwidth. TPG is in a good position to offer unlimited because they own one of the cables out of the country. Bandwidth costs them next to nothing.

So their business model reasonably expects most people will do under 1Tb a month. If you keep doing 1-1.5 TB months of course they are going to drop you because you are losing them money.

      • yes they should be honest and call it the 1Tb max or your shaped plan
but i copped denials from them and was show the door

  • I used them to download around 1TB/year and had no speed issues. They're a Highwinds reseller, so keep that in mind with DMCA takedowns, not much of an issue for me though.

Moved to NewsgroupDirect given better value (I don't need unlimited), but Thundernews were fine.

  • What's the difference between this deal, and one from like private internet access - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/98614

    Which is the better bargain?

    • This deal looks like it has VPN (like your link) as well as newsgroup access.

      • Thanks. Isn't newsgroups free rss feeds?

  • How do you setup the VPN bit?

Bit of a Noob in this area.

        That is just crazy.

        • I know right?!

How can you expect someone to be capable of following that?!

  • I was always interested in getting VPN though I don't know how it works.

Does it cost my data usage from Optus through VPN?

    • Yes it does, think of VPN like a proxy.

Thundernews are pretty snappy with takedown notices. Not an issue if you're downloading legal material - but let's face it, if you're looking at an unlimited plan - you're not.
