Dimmi: 50% off Food at a Different Good Restaurant Every Week. NSW, VIC, QLD, WA

241

This one keeps on giving. Dimmi offers 50% off the food bill at one good selected restaurant in NSW, VIC, QLD, WA every week (drinks are at full price). Easy online booking. No upfront payment.

Book between Tuesday and Thursday. Dine some time in the next few weeks.

Unlike those typical voucher deals you don't have to pay anything up front, and you usually have the whole menu to choose from, not just some special selection. Just make a booking online, turn up, enjoy the food, and at the register 50% will be taken off the food bill. Also unlike typical voucher deals the featured restaurants mostly have great ratings on Urbanspoon (3 out of 4 this week).

Bookings using this special deal are usually available for mid-week only, i.e. Tuesday to Thursday.

This week's restaurants:
NSW: Essenca Italian, Surry Hills, Urbanspoon rating 93%
https://www.dimmi.com.au/restaurant/essenza-italian#deals-19…

VIC: Panama Dining Room, Fitzroy, Urbanspoon rating: 86%
https://www.dimmi.com.au/restaurant/the-panama-dining-room#d…

QLD: The Villager Hotel, Brisbane, Urbanspoon rating: 69%

WA: Saffron Indian, Inglewoode, Urbanspoon rating: 89%
https://www.dimmi.com.au/restaurant/saffron-indian-restauran…

Make sure to check the small-print of each offer. Sometimes they have limitations like "no BYO".

I really like this concept and hope it deals the death blow to the old voucher sites. My understanding is that Dimmi only gets a low fixed fee per booking and not a high percentage of your spend. That makes this model so much more sustainable in the long run and will motivate really good restaurants to participate. Restaurants can fill their tables in off-peak times and we get to eat great food at half price. Win-win.

    • You should have a word with your friends! Seriously, I understand the convenience of simply splitting a bill over having to work out what everyone had. But if your friends start adding up things, they may as well do that to the whole bill, not just for the drinks. Anything else looks like they taking you for a ride…

I agree. That is why I don't go. Generally I try to organise something so we can all go out, but it is on my basis. For example, I organised a multi-course meal and I got to choose all of the menu items before we went. They could either go or not go. I had bought the banquet on an auction so they were all very happy as it was a bargain. The place was BYO only so it was a beautiful thing. I hit the piss and then had my friend drive me to the airport for my redeye. Saved me $60 in taxi fares.

          Sounds like a fun night!

      I'm confused.

Your an ozbargainer and you don't add up everything you have ordered and only pay that?

I don't mind rounding up from $38 to $40 for example just to make it easier, but thats it.

Are there really people out there that pay an extra $10-$40 just because their friends want to split the bill?

Most of the time these friends will know exactly what they are doing and the fact that they are getting a discount because of their policy.

I don't go out with them on these nights. If I want to do some charitable giving, I will pick the groups or individuals selectively.

      • Research has shown that one of the most negative things for many is the "pain of paying" (probably more so for people on OzBargain than elsewhere). It can seriously distract from a nice experience like a good dinner.

Splitting the bill means that every participant feels that pain every time. Splitting it unfairly like in the above example makes it even worse.

The best solution if the same group goes out frequently would be that people take turns paying the whole bill. Only one person experiences the pain each time, others just the pleasure. Since the pain curve flattens off - paying $200 feels not 4 times as bad as paying $50 - the overall amount of pain is minimised.

Could work well in theory, if people are fair…

        • We split bills if everyone drank, or everyone ate vegetarian.

If you're the only one drinking, you pay for your drinks.
If you ate a steak and I had vegetarian noodles, we're itemising the bill.

          Much safer :)

        • Even still I find its very easy for each person to have a very different final amount purchased.

Someone might seem to have a similar bill as everyone else when its actually $20 extra.

I find there's always someone who pulls this kind of thing and pretends like everything is equal.

It's really not that hard to work out how much your meal was and just pay that. Don't blame the restaurants for the crappy splitting system that you and your friends use.

Not blaming the restaurant for the crappy splitting system that some people try to get me to agree to. Blaming them for not letting voucher users BYO. Non drinkers get the full discount. Drinkers have to buy overpriced grog that may not even be to their liking.

        • Nah, we just drink before we go ;)

  • I signed up to subscribe to their deals and this page came up:

    Welcome to the Dimmi community
Here at Dimmi we're bringing diners and restaurants together to create better experiences. By sharing deals, menus, reviews, live table availability and more, we want to help people find the right dining experience for any occasion.

Book and Review 4 times & we'll treat you to a free meal valued at $50.00

We'd also like to reward you for taking part. Book and share your experiences with the rest of the Dimmi community and start earning points towards your next free meal. The more you share, the better it gets for everyone. Did we mention we'll reward you with free meals?

We hope you have many wonderful dining experiences to come!

    Sounds good.

Yes, that is an added benefit, you can collect points and get your $50 off after just 4 meals with review (1000 points for dining, 1000 for reviewing, 8000 required for $50). Note that points for dining are only added to your account once a month, there can be as much as 5 weeks delay.

The only downside in WA specifically is that those $50 can currently only be used at 3 restaurants and only one of them is what I would consider "good". Not much of a choice in that respect. And then at Perth prices 50% off is often better than $50 off…

      • I guess if you travel to the eastern states you could use the points there.

Can you tell us one or more of the places where you can use the $50 in WA?

        Thanks

Also, can you just keep accruing points? Or is it limited to one $50 deal per account?

        • You can see the places here: https://www.dimmi.com.au/my-profile/where-to-redeem

I would expect that you keep accruing points and can convert every 8000 points into a $50 discount. Can't be sure since I have not gone past that mark yet. Of course like so many other reward programs nothing stops them from changing things.

        • Villa D'Este is nice. But not as nice as it once was. Dunno about the other two. Villa Picasso is probably crap as they are CONSTANTLY offering group buy vouchers. In fact, I remember all of them offering them.

        • Silk Road surprised me after hearing a lot of negativity. Service was excellent, and the servings were much bigger than expected. Had to take most of my meal home (so it was lunch the next day as well). I'll be going there when my points kick in!

  • I've claimed abot 2 or 3 free meals from Dimmi. IMO its an excellent service. If I'm planning on going to a particular restaurant, I'll try to check if I can book it through Dimmi to get the rewards points. This even works with some restaurants that I plan to go to using an EB voucher.

    • Cool, I have yet to claim my first free $50.

Dimmi is off to a very good start, I just hope they keep improving. I first used a similar service last year in France, La Fourchette, and they are way ahead of Dimmi. Many more restaurants, great Andoid app and you can make changes online (with Dimmi you still have to call the restaurant for that).

  • Just be aware that some of the restos are grossly overpriced to begin with and then even with 50% off are still hugely overpriced. YMMV but I'd pick them carefully.

  • Looks interesting, will be keen to give it a try sometime. Maybe when a better restaurant is available in Brisbane.

Their counter is interesting: This great special expires in: 0 hrs : 0 mins : 202908.84375 sec

Edit: Looks like the faulty counter is cause by (an ancient version of) IE.

  • I can vouch for Essenca, been there twice now. First time used a voucher, second time paid full price. It allows BYO, and the staff are all very friendly and professional. Make sure to try their scotch egg. Not sure why they are even doing it, but definitely a bargain at 50% off.

    • +1

Its just marketing, to find new customers: get people in with a discount, impress them and hope they come back at full price some day soon.

In that respect Dimmi is the perfect replacement for vouchers. Compared to deal sites that all keep around 50% of the already discounted price for themselves it is very cheap. It also takes care of the booking process and automatically makes sure that only a specified number of discounted guests get in every day.

Compared to ongoing voucher schemes like the Entertainment book it still has the same advantages with booing and "wear levelling" and it is not much more "expensive" - not all people skimp on drinks, so a "50% off food" deal can be pretty similar to a "25% off the whole bill".

From the perspective of us customers the advantages are obvious too. No more up front payment and expired vouchers. No waiting on the phone or leaving of messages to make a booking.

I hope online reservations for restaurants take off big here in Australia too! Just like with hotel and airline bookings everyone can benefit from highly variable pricing: businesses can get bums on seats in off-peak times and flexible customers can score a bargain :-)

  • has anyone used lunchalot.com? is it similar to Dimmi?

    • Didn't know about it until you mentioned it. Seems to have a similar concept.

I find the lunchalot website very sluggish and amateurish (back button kills the search) and this week's discounted restaurants for Perth are not exciting and the discounted times very odd.

I am all for competition, but so far Dimmi wins.

  • Never liked these sites always a con when they adverise normal prices.
