Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE $798 - JB Hi-Fi

320

I know this is not the best price now as the device has just launched last saturday. But for those who are wanting to get one now, here are the comparable prices for australian shops. Don't think you can order the S4 online at jbhifi, you need to grab one in the store. Stock are very limited, only 4 left in canberra city when I got one.

Jb Hifi - $798
Telstra - $816 (they have telstra software in it)
Harvey Norman - $819 (include 32gb Sandisk)
Dicksmith - $849
Samsung Store - $899

This is much better than grey imports that are around $789 price tags

  • My Galaxy Note II that I bought from JB was also Telstra stock so it came with Telstra software and logo.

    • doesn't seem to have any telstra software in it

      • Damn JB … I am stuck with the Telstra bigpond app that I can used because I am not with T

        • Go to the app drawer (the grid of all the apps), hit the menu key, and tap "hide applications". check the bigpond app and you won't see it anymore :)

    • I just bought my s4 last week from jb. No telstra software at all.

Lord Christ are they pushing the phone prices sky high, just not worth it,dont see a single reason to get the s4 over s3 for such price difference, please don't go now in every screen pixel, camera megapixel etc. detail for me, you couldn't pic point the difference with your eye, or give me the statistics that are gonna make you lol…future proof… there just isn't anything s4 can do that you need and would be pissed about that s3 cant do. Just too expensive.

This trending with a new phone model barely year apart, not even that much, is just ridiculous and unjustified, things are going too fast, too weird and scary…

    • +5

The model has worked for apple so well, Samsung are just taking over their market.

    • +1

I can absolutely assure you I and probably most others can tell the difference between 1920x1080 and 1280x720, even on a 5" screen.

The point around pricing though, I agree.

      • +6

        snake oil

        • Not entirely. Even if you can't tell the difference on the screen Android can not run external displays at different resolutions, so to put content on a TV or monitor this will be much better.

        • Galaxy S3 can output 1080p via HDMI…?

        • +1

          Galaxy S3 can output 1080p via HDMI…?

Source? The signal shows up as 1080i, but this doesn't mean the content is 1080.

        • Bruce: Could you please rephrase that? Doesn't make sense!

        • OK the signal that the TV sees from the phone is 1080i, which is the data on the cable. The phone needs to first render the content (photo, video, home screen, whatever) to an internal buffer which is then sent to the phone's screen and/or the MHL link. If the MHL like is 1080 and the buffer is 720 it will upscale the content to fit the transport, but you are still only displaying 720 content.

Only if the phone can have a separate buffer for the local/remote screen, or it can resize the buffer when only using external screens can you get actual 1080 content. As far as I understand Android can't do this. Hopefully Key Lime Pie will fix this anyway. Information on the internet over this issue is sketchy at best.

There's no argument the difference between an S3 and S4 is anything more than minimal. S4 is best suited for someone with a phone 2 or 3 generations old (Such as myself still on an S2)

      • +1

Yep Im on odds … looks like your on evens.

      • That's me, I currently have an SII - Gawd, what to do.

        • +1

I'd recommend buying an S3 for cheap ;)

        • Thats what im thinking of doing now … and im currently on an I8510 haha

        • Me too. Waiting for the i9305 to hit $350..

      • Even for those who are few generations behind, paying almost $800 for the S4 when S3 is only $400 doesn't make much sense..

    • +4

You're absolutely right, but the idiot part of my brain doesn't want to listen!

I find them pushing out a new model every year a good thing. I agree buying the newest model every year is a silly thing to do but some people like that, and they pay the early adopters tax to do so for bragging rights.

However with every new release also means the old model drops in price or is on a run-out clearance. More models come out, the faster the older ones drop in price, and that's the one I'll be buying. Same thing happens with computers/graphics cards and I'm sure pretty much any other tech I can name.

  • +6

They are turning into Apple. The price is just rediculous and I will not be buying another Samsung phone on launch again. Paid $747 for my GS3 at DSE last year (not even 12 months ago) and then a few months later they release it with 4G and 2GB Ram, and now they sell for about $350 online.

    • +6

Although with Apple products you would get a much higher resale value as they don't really allow retailers to discount there products.

      • +3

yeah that is a big +

      • Agreed, that's my only regret changing from Apple to Samsung. I used to be able to upgrade my phone for like ~$150 each year, now with Samsung it'd cost me like, $400+.
Samsung: Same crazy high prices, no resell value.

      • Apple allow retailers to price it at any price they want. It's illegal to dictate pricing (in the Western world) - it's called price fixing!

The way they make retailers stick to a low margin is by selling the goods themselves at a price that's only slightly higher than the wholesale price. It's hard for retailers to compete with this, but they make it up in volume and accessories.

Since there's only a relatively small difference between the wholesale price and the retail price, it also ensures that the goods have a good second-hand value.

    • +9

Early adopter tax. New top tier flagship phones always start off at this price and rapidly decrease months after release. At least Android products decrease in price overtime whereas Apple barely budges.

This has always been the case for new technology and quite frankly I see nothing wrong with it.

      • +2

        Early adopter tax.

        Exactly!
I think my Nokia N90 was around $1000 when i bought that. I think the price of phones has gone down overall, only people who say this is too high are ones who's always want the lastest and greatest but can not afford the flagship phones every 10 months. Oh and it was now 10 years ago I got my first touch screen smart phone the Motorola A920! I know I've got that brick lying around in a draw here somewhere.

        • +1

^ this post exactly. Flagship model prices have gone down considerably. When I bought the nokia n95 (I think that's what it was) and HTC desire HD they cost close to 1000.

      • Correct, this is the typical technology product lifecycle, expect this to be for qhd TV's and anything flagship in tech.

        It's the techie emotional/braggers price.

    • +1

If you foolishly paid $747 for your SGS3 (like myself) than you should know that if you wait a few months the price will drop severely as competitors phones hit the market. (Google I/O is in May, where they will announce a much cheaper Nexus device.)

The Galaxy S4 will be 600 to 700 in less than 2 months.

      • I guess foolish is in the eye of the beholder, if it satisfies ones emotional crave to be the first in Aus to own one, or that your a billionaire and price of 600 or 1200 is peanuts, irrespective down the track it's going to be cheaper, that person would seemed to have made a satisfying purchase.

      • yeah but that's the thing about wanting to own the phone from day one, obviously if you wait a few months it will be cheaper, but how much cheaper, and every year there is a new one so waiting is not an option for some

      • 28 Degrees MasterCard Shopper Protection is the way to go. Brought the effective price of my S3 4G from $788 down to $589 after 6 months of use.

  • -3

This isnt a bargain at all, such a ripoff in fact. I don't know why this is even posted. You can get the Xperia Z (which has equivalent specs) for under $600 local stock and is way better value for money.

    • +4

and you can also drop it in a glass of water, just for a laugh

      • +2

coat this phone with liquipel and you can do the same too. costs ~$90 for the coating though.

        • liquipel is a farce

        • +1

@jobler: Nicely backed up statement you have there. Well played, sir.

        • +3

common sense backs it up really.

Have you ever wondered why camera manufacturers go to such lengths to make a waterpoof camera when they could just liquipel their current range?

Come to think of it, why do people pay for flood cover in their house insurance when they could just liquipel the entire house?

The answer is simple. It doesn't work. It might stop water damage in some rain but put it in a glass of water overnight and see what happens.

          http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/awards/shonky-awa…

"Liquipel: it’s homeopathy for iStuff." - lol

    • -3

wow, that naive! If you call the S4 which is lighter, thinner, faster processor, larger storage capability, larger battery, IR capability, a barometer, humidity, thermometer sensors "equivalent" then yes, they are the same!

Is it a bargain, I believe yes considering RRP is $899 and its the cheapest local stock.

      • +3

They all have their pros and cons.. Xperia Z has a lot better build quality, has a nicer UI, is waterproof, and has wireless charging built in.

      • +3

So a company can wack on a high RRP and sells for less and you will call it a bargain?

Yep as it is it personality that matters!

that in 6 months will be improved on

well i bloody well hope so, its called progress… something that died at Apple along with Jobs!

Nexus 4 looks like a better deal to me

  • Good post OP
Kogan have (limited stock) $788 including shipping, just have to wait a week though

  • What about Kogan, I know they are grey import but there is a difference in pricing?

    • +4

For a $10 difference between grey and local….its a no brainer really!

      • My bad, didn't see the LTE bit and I thought it was 3G.

  • +1

wait 2 weeks its will be 100$ off else where.. Samsung phones prices drop like pigeons after the get pooped out history tells us.. and if u wait till august when iphone5s gets announced it will be most likey tracking arnd the 500$ mark.. the s3 did, no reason y this will too

    • That's very true. Look at the Note 2 for example from Kogan. Price reduced down to $500 from $730 2 months ago.

  • +2

not sure how samsung think theyre gonna get away with charging $100 more than a brand new HTC One, which many people think is the better phone anyway…

    • Because the S3 is the most popular phone ever and this is the follow up? Exactly the same reason that apple can charge whatever they like and people don't even know what they are buying.

    • The HTC One camera is rubbish, and still RRP is $759 at most places including mobicity.. I think I'm going to go the Sony Z as the camera is decent and still quad core. The screen is nice too and you can negotiate with JB's down to $590.

      • +2

If you've seen some comparisons you wouldn't think Xperia Z's camera is better.

      • -1

The screen on the Xperia Z is pretty disappointing when you compare it with the One or the S4. It's how the S4 would look, with a matte finish screen protector.

    • They will because they are slowly taking Apple's market, and those people are already used to forking out their entire incomes for a 'premium' device

  • +1

I wait a month time and price will fall down to below $700.

  • Kogan now have it for $739… Yes they are grey imports being i9500 but at least they have the dual Quad processors :)

I'm also on Vodafone and 4G/LTE doesnt interest me.

    • I don't even need one quad core.

  • +2

If you ever need to do a repair on your s4, and i hope that you never will, but i had to do one before on my s2, this guy is an absolute legend at fixing them and uploading instructional video's on youtube.

check him out and bookmark it !!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm4f2XjQLAM

  • Wait for a year then get S4 for what S3 is worth right now.

You don't always have to get the latest and greatest. Besides its not that "great" compare to S3

On another note, does anyone know if S4 uses standard MHL HDMI connector now? S3 had a differnet one which pisses me off compared to S2…They make you buy Samsung Geniune accessory for that, same as USB OTG.

  • +1

wait 9 months > price drops to $400 > SG S5 comes out > wait another 9 months > S5 Drops to $400 > S6 comes out > wait another 9 months etc etc > keep waiting for the rest of your life > never gets a new phone

Yes, I understand waiting a month or 2 may save you a a $100 or $200… (and 9 months maybe $400!) however if you had the phone in your hand for that month or two, would you not be enjoying the phone for a little bit longer? Isn't the utility (#economics) you've gained from using the phone for a month of two, larger than the price difference? Haha just a question to all my fellow OzBargainers really, what are your thoughts?

(My thoughts: I personally think the S4 is a little too highly priced, when you can get a similar S3 for literally less than half the price. Is the S4 really twice as good as the S3? or the Nexus 4?)

    • Some people think its worth it to get at launch @ its peak price levels.

Others will wait for few months to see a price drop.

and for all Android phones to date, they never retain their value same as all other electronics. Only Apple's iPhone depreciation is less overtime.

You can use analogy of eneloop batteries compare with normal ones.

Its all subjective, and personally I think its not worth the upgrade from S3>S4, and its not anywhere 2x as good, plus I can't afford to waste money like that.

I'm not a fanboy and I don't need to chase the latest and greatest (which again is subjective if S4 is all that great)

  • +2

Build quality still looks cheap as chips

    • as per usual but some ppl still buy. their marketing department is doing an excellent job.

  • +1

held one today, it feels so cheap with all the plastic. its really light which is great (compared to my lumia 920 lol). but too cheap of a feel. I wonder how long the battery will last with all those cores which are never used.

    • More cores at a lower clock is generally better for battery life, but there are a lot of factors so it is hard to make blanket statements.

    • Agreed… The s4 battery cover is super thin and seems like it over heats easily :/ sigh. Battery also drains quite fast bit then again I've been using it a lot. The phone itself is not flimsy though. I agree with everyone… Just wait a few months for the price to drop.

  • I went to JB Hi-Fi Springvale today, they only seemed to have some old HTC and the S3. Worst part was there were absolutely no staff around to ask even though the store was dead.

    • should have stripped off your clothes, grabbed a few expensive items and walked out

  • also $798 at big W now in their latest catalogue
