Ok this deal requires careful consideration. I have it on good word this is a school order in the 1,000s that the education department reneged on because the screen only responds to the included stylus, not to finger touch.

Also be aware this is 1.9kg and thick at 27.7mm - Win7 Pro which is a bit old hat. The colour is also divisive. I also feel that Toshiba have orphaned this one a bit as online support resources are scant. The retail i5 model is $1,600+ so obviously Toshiba are taking a bath on this. Also when they say "refurb" put your mind at rest, its just a cancelled order so no human has actually touched it besides the OEM factory staff.

No USB3.0 - also it seems it has upgradable memory to 8Gb and the msata ssd and cpu should be upgradeable but without any service manual I cant say for certain.

Also the lack of touchpad and the odd nipple/mouse control on the right side will take a fair bit of getting used to.

Very odd duck.

Also centercom lol. I am guessing many more stores will have this once it filters thru to their systems.

  • Good to see it has a pen, but an i3 ~~~ meh, I will get one if i5 or i7 installed.

    • Why? Almost any task that needs an i5 is really not what this is designed for. i7 even more so.

  • +1

i3, windows 7, no a proper touch screen, USB 2 only.
    Doesn't seem so attractive

    • Can you point to a convertible tablet/laptop with better specs for anywhere near the price? If so, I'd be very interested.

    • I you want it to write on, a Digitizer Pen should give you a lot more control than a finger or capacitive stylus. Also on my Lenovo tablet, I sometimes turn off touch since it means that I don't have to worry about brushing the screen with my palm when writing.

Having the ability to turn touch on and off is clearly better than never having touch of-course. And lacking both touch and a touchpad is a bit weird.

For people who want a Digitizer pen however, this is the first time I have seem a good buy on such a laptop.

BTW, it is a bit off an odd device in an number of ways. Probably a good idea for Ozbargainers to think about whether they like those oddities. For example, one commenter found the device too cramped for a laptop and too heavy for a tablet; see the review at: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/13/toshiba-portege-m930-prot…

  • Price looks OK for what its supposed to be.
i3, i5, i7, doesn't really matter depending on what you will be doing with it.

  • Centrecom - no thanks. Bad experience!

    • I don't think many people on Ozbargain would really care about service when there is a bargain to be had. That's why people keep bad mouthing places like MSY but they still crawl back to them because they usually have the best prices.

  • There aren't many choices with a digitizer at this price but damn that's big and heavy to use as a tablet

  • according to friends at a school which uses these, the keyboard is really cramped and hard to use

  • +2

These aren't the best laptops, I used them last year at school, and the fact that there's no touchpad is really annoying because the mouse control on the side is really fiddly and takes a really long time to get used to. The keyboard is really cramped once you push the screen up and convert it into a laptop, because the angle that the screen is positioned at leaves little space for a keyboard and basically, typing with the keyboard is really awkward since there's not enough space. The screen is much better than an older version of the Portege series, but is really prone to scratches because when the laptop closes in tablet mode (so the screen is facing outwards I guess, (kinda hard to explain…) unlike the other transformer PCs where the tablet is removable and able to be placed back onto the laptop dock).
The quality of the glass is also debatable, many of the students at my school have cracked screens, and a few have even said that the glass cracks simply when tapping the screen with the digitizer pen..

All in all…. Think before you buy.

    • Thanks for the review

      • Haha no problem
