What is your prediction on Oil prices?

      • +16

        or gold/silver/iron ore/russian brides/coffee for that matter

        • Coffee :)

      • +19

the prices will Soar to $250 a barrel

        start shopping for push bikes

    • This is an insane price for the capacity and performance

but still not past the 50c/gb mark yet

i bought my 512gB drive from Amazon de last year for like $375, which was a crazy bargain at the time

but personally this still isnt cheap enough to buy another just yet

though i imagine existing M4 drives to drop in price to the magical 50c mark once it gets more widely released tho! :)

Pardon me, hombre, but 512Gb SSDs are in the $300-$420 territory. Anything more than 512gb costs an arm and a leg. An SSD over 700Gb under $700 is awesome. This is for people aiming to have performance and storage in the one same place, and consequently comes at a price.

An i5 laptop is not aiming for performance. In most cases, people buying them will either not care for an SSD or will opt for a cheap 128Gb SSD so in all fairness, this is not comparing apples with apples.

      edit: typos…

your post knocked about 20 points off my IQ for just reading it

would like to see some reviews though before i spend close to $600 on a SSD

  • +3

theres a Grr8 5* review at the amazon link by a non owna cuz

      this one

Currently I do not own this SSD, since it's not yet available to buy, but it sure is great to see it "coming soon".
I would most likely buy this SSD, since it provides plenty of storage, and as official crucial website claims is "MLC NAND Flash", not the TLC, so it can be rewritten more times. Looking forward to it!

    • +1

At least he was honest about it, I like that. The information he provides is still a bit of use, and you know where it's coming from.

Currently I have not seen your next comment, since its not yet available to view, but it sure is great to know its "coming soon".
I would most likely upvote your next comment, as it will be positive and useful, not like this comment, so it will be read more times. Looking forward to it!

    Hold off guys
    Just noticed this

    Crucial
    Item Weight 141 g
    Product Dimensions 13 x 1.9 x 13 cm
    Item model number CT480M500SSD1
    Hard Drive Size 960 GB

Model number advertised as the 480GB. You may need to clarify with the seller

Seems too good to be true as Amazon have it on backorder (1 - 2 month delivery time)

    • The model number in the title is Crucial CT960M500SSD1, so the one you are looking at in the product details has probably just been copied and pasted from the lower model.

      • +1

Usually amazon will match items their product by item number, not titles or description ?
Best to rectify this with amazon

        • email has been sent, we'll see what they say..

        • product details has probably just been copied and pasted from the lower model.

Their is no 480GB model listed on amazon either, so its not a copy and paste

        • Looking around, I have found a few international retailers selling this for around the $580 - $620 region, so it is quite feasible that amazon are selling this for $567 also bearing in mind that the standard price is $780 which would be overpriced if it were only 480gb. So I think this will be the real deal.

        • would be worth waiting for a confirmation from amazon
Amazon UK prices are always abit more expensive than US retailers

        • 103270 Yen at Amazon Japan (preorder) http://www.amazon.co.jp/Crucial-2-5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%83%…

          That's over $1000 Australian

        • Crucial have explicitly stated initial prices are meant to hover around $600 though.

        • its supply vs demand that controls pricing
          RRP is just a number

    • +1

Might be worth putting a quick edit in the main description above just to give a warning.

  • Looks like the store entry has been removed. Seems something is wrong here…

    • I just tried to add to cart and checkout and got right through to the very last confirmation with no problems so still seems active to me. That was with the AVIDES seller, same figures as OP and no troubles with Australian delivery.

      • Ah it seems to have returned. For awhile the link redirected to imash seller and couldn't get to AVIDES.

      • to be honest, I meant money to spare lol

        • +1

then its either a granny flat or camry

  • +1

personally I've no use for such a large SSD, but impressive price $/GB

  • +1

And here I am with a 60GB Vertex 3 sigh

    • +3

Doesn't matter. Quick booting times :)

  • That is a monster!

  • WOW, prices keep dropping…

    The Crucial 512GB for $464

  • Purchased. Thanks OP.

    Leaving Info here below.

Benefits of Advanced NAND Flash Technology
The M500 SSD utilizes Micron’s award-winning, 20-nanometer (nm) multilevel cell (MLC) NAND flash to achieve terabyte-class capacity and enable a new level of SSD price competitiveness; the 960GB Crucial M500 SSD will be initially priced under $600.

The drive’s sequential read and write speeds reach up to 500 MB/s and 400 MB/s, respectively.

  • +1

wow. great price. good news for all SSD prices

    • next price drop …. samsung 840 pro :D

  • +2

    SO just contacted amazon chat

If you buy it from amazon.co.uk for 455.56 GBP, you are guaranteed to get the 960GB
If you buy it from other seller, they cannot guarantee that. They said third party selers use amazon item catalogue to add items to their store, so they might have added the 480Gb instead of 960GB. In that case, you would have to contact the seller to confirm AVIDES here

  • +2

That's the biggest SSD I've ever heard of. We're making real progress here.

But I'm used to smaller sizes and don't really require this much.

    • +8

      That's what she said

      • +1

        I knew someone wouldn't resist…

        • +4

          Resistance is fertile….

        • +5

          And sometimes futile

Alright, look the first review from Amazon here:

Something fishy here - This new SSDS is not yet advertised for sale on crucial's web page -
How can someone review it without even having used it ??
Is tis a way to secure preorders before even the manufacturer ?
Why does amazon allow this ?

My one star rating is only because I have to rate it to get this "review" published - I have not seen one nor used one but hope to buy one once officially released.

  • It's mentioned here that…

the 960GB Crucial M500 SSD will be initially priced under $600

    Might be legit?

Edit: ah, looks like I'm late to the party. Other people have already quoted the above :)

    • Does that mean 480GBs will drop under $300? Yum if so!

  • +2

Is M500 better than M4, or is it a budget version (like Samsung 840 is over 830)?

    • +1

Great question. Budget vs top of the line models differ by read/write speeds don't they? How do they compare?

      • Not just speeds but quality of the nand as well. They have fewer write cycles and don't last as long, therefore their warranty is also shorter.

I googled them. They are too new, no M500 reviews up yet. But apparently they are supposed to be better than M4s, but the price is budget priced. Not sure how they managed that.

I wonder how thick a 960GB drive will be however. Thickness is important if you're putting it into a laptop.

  • EDIT: never mind; easternculture already pointed out the ASIN inconsistency but didn't use that word, so I missed it before posting.

  • How does warranty work for these? Would we have to post back to UK?

  • Nice price if you actually need a ~1 GB SSD. Suppose would be good for storing network boot images or SQL server data but for home use??? Good for laptops I suppose 'cause you don't have to have an mSATA SSD + a HDD.

    • +1

Definitely awesome for laptops! You get oodles of super fast storage. Wish I had more money… but I need to invest in bitcoin. ;)

      • But Bitcoins are definitely in a price bubble. SSDs are not. :D

  • Links to imash now not to AVIDES.

Searched "960gb" in AVIDES storefront and it's not even showing up, seems like they either are sold out or removed it completely.

    "Dear customer,

unfortunately the ordered article cannot be supplied ex stock. Amazon transmits the actual incoming orders with certain periods, which are not corresponding to the real time. Therefore the adjustment of our inventory can be delayed and - like in your case - we cannot supply the demand for this article.
We are awfully sorry that under these circumstances, we are not able to accept your order.

Thank you for your understanding and please accept our sincere apologies for all the inconveniences that have been caused to you."

Email I got from them. It's a no go.

  • Damn - was just about to order

  • The least they could do with the current pricing/product error @ http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/99289 is correct the subject to reflect that its an error and move it to the forums next to this one.
