Shame it is a Maxtor, but great deal otherwise.

  • Is it 2.5" or 3.5"?

    • Nearly 100% certain it is a 3.5"

Too cheap for a 2.5", but then again, I'd like to be wrong.

  • +1

I believe if it were a 2.5" drive it would be a One touch III (mini).

  • What's the capacity? Is there an online link to this HDD from a comparable retailer? I'll check Sydney CBD today for stock. Unless anyone else can say if this is also stocked in NSW…

  • +4

Sorry, but I can't find this drive listed on the relevant page of the AP website http://www.auspost.com.au/BCP/0,1467,CH4124%257EMO19,00.html
They have the Maxtor OneTouch III Mini 120GB & OneTouch 4 Mini 120GB both at $59.
Also the WD 120GB Passport for $59, so I think I'd take the WD Passport drive over the Maxtor myself.
Also, also, they have the WD 1TB My Book Essentials for $219, which I think is as good as the recent/current HN & OW specials (& certainly cheaper than the $249 I paid 6 months ago).

    Cheers,
    Live Long and Prosper.

Thanks for the info, teaearlgrey! The WD Passport 120Gb looks like a good option.

A 54000 rpm 2.5" would be nice (to swap into a netbook to replace an 80Gb drive!). Though the small-size HDs on AusPost aren't as well priced.

I just picked up this HDD for $39 at Macquarie Park, Sydney. Apparently it was the last one in the network (not sure what that means though!).

  • +1

pretty good though….even the case it self already cost around 20bux

  • +1

it is a mini edition im using it right now to run windows 7 its great

    • so no power req?

  • ?? not quite sure what you mean but it just plugs into a usb slot on your pc for power

    • Cheers mate, off to get one now (yay for post office being next door to my work lol)

      • Didn't have any, what store u get yours?

  • +1

Got a WD 120G Passport @ Ringwood, Vic. The said they had one out the back, but couldn't find it. I got the one out of the display cabinet.

  • Sydney GPO is absolutely hopeless.
It could take 15mins to get served, after queueing, then you'll find the staff don't have access to the Aus Post website or even to a product list.
Obsolete models on the shelf behind the counter (at old dull prices, not the specials on the website) are for sale and that's it. :(

OfficeWorks on Sussex St has no similar products, so strikeout for these two.

I'll try my suburban Post tomorrow but I'm not expecting anything.

Has anyone picked up a good deal at a suburb in Sydney other than Macquarie Park?

    I bought the $59 WD 120gb.

$39 Maxtor: Their system shows Toowoomba, Pacific Fair and Warwick as the only SEQLD locations who have stock.

  • Awww, they sold out on the 80gb one at the one in St Geroges Tce in Perth… had to settle for the 120gb one for $59…

    • dammit I walked past their today… could have grabbed one

  • How can you check if they have any in stock at your local PO ?
Also, I cant even see the 39$ version even listed anywhere.

  • +1

For the people who could buy the 39$ HDD, can you mention the catalog code ? Something like 99776

    or 27927.
    Cheers!

  • +1

the catlog code is 98701 cheers

  • +1

This is extremely good value, especially from Auspost. Yes it's a Maxtor but I've had no issue with Maxtor brand.

  • Cool. Can anyone mention a link for this famed 39$ deal. It is definitely NOT on AusPost's website. Do you have to call the PO to check ?

  • yea you have to call them and ask if they have any stock for catlog code 98701

  • +1

got my WD 120 gig passport for 59. got heaps in W.A. ………. no stock in officeworks to price match or beat 5%……..

  • +1

Thanks for this one. A helpful Post Office staff member located last two Maxtor 80GB drives (98701) in Tasmania - price now $29. Bargain!

Here's link to list of drives, etc, on Australia Post website (under 'Drives & Digital Storage'): www.auspost.com.au/BCP/0,1467,CH4124%257EMO19,00.html

This list now shows 120GB Maxtor III Mini Hard Drive for $39 (cat. no 99776).

Thanks for the bargain guys, just got the last one (80gb Maxtor) for $29 from East Melb branch.Their cabinet is now clear. The operator said there is another one at 277 Williams St. For the 120gb WD, there is one left in MElbourne A'Beckett store for $59. good luck.

    • Checked out A'Beckett Street post office - no 80 or 120GB left unfortunately

  • Sumner Park (QLD) never got any. :(
Anyone know of any in Brissy?

  • +1

OK. Heads up for everyone - I called up the post office 131318 and was told there is no stock in NSW. I decided to try the Surry Hills PO and the Strawberry Hills PO. Lo and BEhold, the Strawberry Hills PO DID have the 120GB HD for 39/- so I bought the last 2.
If you are told over the phone there are non left, still check out the bigger PO's around you, there may be a couple of pieces left..

  • Thanks for the update zcream. No luck at Sydney GPO or the one in MLC Centre.

PO's on the Gold Coast are sold out and a couple that my father visited had a sign up stating that - Must have been a popular one for them. What my father did find (I'm in NZ and we're each after a usb powered hd) is that Harvey Norman on The Gold Coast have Maxtor Mini 160gb for $88, 250gb for $112, 320gb for $142. Prices elsewhere as per staticice $92(160gb), $129(250gb), $155(320ggb). Cheers M.

  • Hi guys, just ring 131318 and asked the operator to locate Maxtor 80gb with product code (98701) or Maxtor 120gb (99776).
I just picked two up, 1 (120gb) in a Melbourne city store) and travelled to another nearby store for the 80gb. good luck. Should be still some left if you don't mind travel a bit.

  • cokekfc - which stores did you go to?

    • Atlas - one at Melbourne GPO and one at 35 Collins St East branch. good luck.

  • I just got a Maxtor 80gigger and plugged it into my computer at work (USB 1.1) the external hdd came with a y splitter usb cable to get more power to the device which was also plugged in. It gets detected in windows and identifies itself, but doesn't appear in my computer/device manager.. And was/is making a clicking noise. I'm thinking there mustn't be enough power from this computer. Hopefully it will work on my home computer…
I personally didn't have much faith in Maxtor products to begin with! But couldn't pass up this deal!

  • koonit - you could try getting an externally powered usb hub which should work

    • Having a powered USB hub kind of defeats the purpose of getting this for it's lack of needing an additional power plug.

Has anyone noticed (or bought) the 500GB Maxtor OneTouch III drive listed on the Australia Post page? Exceptional value for $69!!

Hi everyone, purchased 2 x 120GB hard drives at GPO Melbourne today. Bargain price of $39 each… thanks for the deal!

  • +1

    All gone in Albany.
Does anyone else think it's very strange that Auspost don't do mail order?

    • Good pick-up albanywa.
The more you think about it, the funnier it is!
      [ :- { )

    • +2

You can do a mail order via fax or email (need to call 131118 and get them to email you the order form)… although I find it extremely strange that they don't do online orders!

  • This review is old (from 2006) and reviewing the 100g model so it may not apply, but some user comments seem to suggest that reliability may be an issue: http://www.cnet.com.au/laptops/accessories/0,239035630,24006…

But from what I can tell, it appears to use an ATA drive so it could possibly be used as a replacement drive in an old notebook.

    • Is that; Parallel ATA (P-ATA=IDE), or Serial ATA (SATA)?
      [ :- { )

  • When does this offer end? Is it available at all Australia Posts'in Oz?HOWMNY GIGS IS THE $29 one? And is it internal or external (USB) drive?

  • $29 one is 80gbs and the offer never ends they will just keep getting cheaper till they sell out i guess

    Parramatta
    North Ryde
    Hunter

Any post office can check this on the computer for you.
