      • +1

thanks for catching that typo - it's meant to be 22 march not 22 april - will inform to correct :)

    • Joining is a one off, provided that there's activity within an 18 month time period (fairly sure it's 18 months).

      • Joining is for life. You only lose your points balance after 18 months of no activity, you still keep your membership.

    • -1

      this one works! thanks

  • I seem to be able to join up right now, using the Avis link

isnt qantas FF always free through woolworths rewards?

  • +1

Wait, is this for the reward points thing, or does it get you access to their airport lounge?

    • +2

      oh you wish…….

Look at the normal price of qantas club lounge access and realise what you dreaming of. This would be the "bargain of the century"

And would be totally useless if true, as every freeloading ozbargainer would be at the bar scoffing down all the free alcohol, if you could even get into the terminal let alone the club.

      • -3

Qantas lounges have majorly deteriorated in quality. Velocity lounges are even better.

        • -2

I hope you're joking. The international lounge in Sydney and Melbourne are among the best in the world.

        • My ranking of QF and VA lounges in Australia (VA don't operate their own international lounges at the moment): Qantas First in SYD and MEL (International) > Qantas Chairman's Lounge (Domestic) > Qantas Business (International) > Qantas Business (Domestic) > Virgin Australia (Domestic) > Qantas Club (Domestic).

        • -1

As a true ozbargainer… can you explain these 'lounges' to me? I have no knowledge of such places.

    • +2

The one with access to the lounge is the Qantas Club card, this is simply for the frequent flyer program.

    • +1

Or if you reach Gold FF status then your QC access is complimentary

    • +2

Normal airlines have frequent flyer schemes that they actively try to get you to sign up to. For free.

Qantas have the same type of scheme, but for some reason think someone is going to PAY to join such a thing. eg pay to be marketed at.

This seems to be symptomatic of the crassly poor customer focus in Australia, and Qantas's insane inability understand the marketplace.

I can understand how you would get confused, yep, I too would expect something for the money - but nope, they really are that dumb.

  • +7

This program is dead. It has been watered down so much with fuel surcharges and taxes still make it about 75% of the ticket cost. You are better off wasting the points on ipods or gift cards, which are burned at a stupid rate. Credit cards linked to QFF were the death of this.

Return trip to Singapore vs buying Wish gift cards

Quick summary: Trip wins with points buying 0.86 cents each, versus 0.69 cents.

      Notes from Calculations

      FLIGHT

      Singapore Jan 2014, Fri 17 to 24

QANTAS classic seat rewards: 60,000 points + $464.92 (1 stop over on way there, 0 on way back)
Bestflights.com.au: $982 (Emirates, 0 stopovers, admittedly a sale but not there are heaps of stopover flights around this price)

60,000 points reduces the flight price by around $517
      Around 0.861 cents per point.

      GIFT CARD

47250 points buys $325 of Wish gift cards
      0.687 cents per point

      • Or to extend it even further a return flight from Mount Isa to Brisbane may 22-23:
        Cheapest available (Qantas) $597
Classic award seat: 24000 points plus $112
        24000 points = $485
        2.021 cents per point

It is about the only place in Australia where points are regularly an effective use for flights.

      "This program is dead"

      I completely disagree.
I have Citibank Citibusiness Gold card, $1 gives you 1.25 points. Put EVERYTHING thru this card. Make sure you pay no interest on the card.
Ring Citibank each year, and they waive the annual fee, normally $149.00. Just use the card, and forget about it. Pick up bonus points every now and again from other QFF partners, like Cellarmasters, BIG W, Dick Smith, etc, and every 4 years or so, (on an average wage) you will have enough points for 2 x RTW Business class fares, points required for this are currently 560 000. To buy a One World Qantas RTW Business Ticket, for one person, is somewhere in the vicinity of $10 000-$15 000.
So that's at least a $20, 000 air fare, for doing absolutely nothing. (admittedly, you do have to pay for taxes, or at least we did, last time we flew business round the world. Taxes were approx. $400 each)

Not dead. Not by a long shot. Just have to be patient!

      • -1

It is dead. Velocity rewards give much better bang for buck.

        • Like everything, we can respect your opinion, however as another opinion, after flying Virgin, I wouldnt do that again soon.

        • Have a nice day, Richard.

        • Yes but you don't have to fly them, you can fly singapore, delta, air nz, etihad and others.

      • +1

        560000 / 4 = 140000
        140000 / 1.25 = $112000

So yeah, if you spend $112000 a year, or a bit less if you pick up some bonus points then you can get this benefit. Not sure that's relevant to too many "average wage" earners though.

      • lol, I wonder if any non-business Citibank customers have had success waiving their annual CC fee…

    • +1

I like using my points to upgrade flights to get better seats eg. front row on long haul international (I'm 6'6"), or occasionally class upgrades.
I find these to be worth the points and there's no taxes etc.

      • What, to save ~10 minutes worth of plane exiting, immigration, waiting for bags, and queuing to exit?
I'll take the gift cards thanks!!

        • +2

front row don't have any seats in front, and therefore those with long legs such as me (6ft 6in tall) don't feel cramped. On a 14 hr flight to LAX, more than worth the points!!

        • front row don't have any seats in front

          Don't forget the cockpit… :-P

  • +1

What can this do that EDR card + Qantas can't?

    • +3

      nothing

  • Any idea what an AUS - USA return flight would rack up in points and what the equivalent reward would be?

    $20 gift card?
    domestic airfare?
    etc?

    • +2

$100 woolies gift card plus some points left over

    • +1

If you don't mind going on a cheaper airline than qantas, you'll save more than the QFF points will get you - a LOT more.

    • +1

Flew to LAX last September from PER. I got total 19,064 points. Equal to $100 gift card + bits

      • Cheers for all the replies.

I booked during Qantas sale, so price differential between Virgin et al. was negligible.

  • Honestly I fly virgin a lot and joined velocity they seem to be better point value when redeeming things like flights and vouchers. It's free and also they generally offer a yearly 20% extra point value when transferring from other ff point programs. Dunno cant find any value in qantas what so ever even when shopping at woolies.

  • +1

Or just sign up with an overseas address (It's FREE) and change address later. They will send your membership card overseas but all you need is the member number which they will email you anyway.

  • Nice

  • I think I was joined up as a kid. I seem to recall having a Qantas card when I was young. Anyone know the best way to check if I'm still a member?

    • +2

You could probably call ask them?

      13 11 31

      • thanks

  • Hi guys,
I have just signed up to qantas' frequent flyer program. I don't fly or anything and don't really do a lot of grocery shopping over $30 at all. Do you think it's worth me transferring the fuel docket to flyer points or to keep it as the dockets…which one is more worth it?
    Thanks!

  • Tax Considerations
Qantas recommends that you consult a taxation adviser to ensure that you understand possible Taxation and Fringe Benefits Tax implications, if any, related to your membership of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

What has this got to do with tax?

    • +2

If your work pays for flights but you collect and redeem the points for personal use, this is considered to be a fringe benefit and you are meant to declare this and pay tax on it.

      • +1

When I was employed by the fed govt I was never allowed to collect QFF points

  • +1

Just realized there's no age limit so I signed up my 3 year old for our flights to Sri Lanka next week, which I will do a "family" transfer of his points to mine when we get back.

    • Ha watch it, this might be seen as taking advantage of a minor. In 15 years they may sue you for misappropriation of flyer credits. :)

Then you'll be back here looking for discount lawyers…

  • Worked for me. Thanks.

  • I was able to join for free with Woolies. Doubt if Ill ever get anything out of it, but since I never buy fuel from Coles/woolworths I took this option. Rather support the independants for fuel.
Dont ever recall having ot explained to me there was an annual fee!!
