Is ATH-M50 six times better than the $20 ATH-T400 we just bought from COTD?
Not quite, but they're approximately 5.3 times better.
I have one M50 and am waiting for the T400 to arrive. May give some feed back when it does.
Got my T400 from COTD today. Quite quick delivery actually from COTD.
Quick impressions after 15 mins of listening (and I am no audiophile reporter):
Package of T400 is less classy compared to M50, headphones sitting inside a large plastic box. Something you would expect from say BIG W's hangers. The M50 was in a classy white paper box, nicely folded too.
Listening to Royksopp's Happy Up There on my IPOD classic with line out to a FILO E11 amp - the T400 sounds similar to my Senn HD 212 Pro. It has more prominent mid range than the M50. But the bass does not reach as low as the M50 and does not impress as much.
The T400 on its own after a while it's ok but I'd probably use it more for movies as the speech is probably better on this than the M50. The cable of the M50 being coiled is far more easier to manage (given that it is being used on the IPOD) than the 3m uncoiled cable of the T400.
Overall, I am not sure if I should have bought the T400 as I already have a back up with the HD212 Pro but for those thinking of the M50, it is definitely worth it. I wonder how much better the more expensive headphones would be compared to the M50.
Cheers.
is it better than Dre Beats?
another dre fan?
Much better than Dre Beats. Although these headphones aren't ideal for portable use due to it's 3m cable length.
Very good headphones though with my IPOD classic and E11 amp, they show up the poor compression quality of some of my MP3s :-(((. These fold up quite well and if you got the coiled cable, they are not too bulky. Nevertheless, I am waiting for a special for either UE TF10s or one of the XBA3-4 series for portable use.
Please note the cabling for the Audio Technica: ATH-M50 is coiled.
While the Audio Technica: ATH-M50s uses a straight-cable
Cord Length: 1.2m coiled. 3.0m straight cable.

the title of the post clearly states that they are coiled
This is in response to Hirokuro's post

The $19.95 T400's are most likely better than Dre Beats
what do you reckon - are these better than my usher s-520's?
and better than "justin beiber" going "one direction"
I have those Ushers, pretty hard to compare speakers to headphones.
Personally, I didn't like them when I tried them, but I was in a busy environment and they may have been damaged. They get a lot of good reviews other than comfort issues
Excellent headphones. Bought a pair a few months ago and haven't looked back. They're great.
Was waiting on a deal for these for a while, cheers OP.
To clear things up, as an audiophile, I can vouch for Audio Technic ATH-M50's to be much, much better than Beats headphones. Beats are like Alienware, they are good, but overpriced. Go for the M50's, you won't regret it.
Definitely an overrated headphone.
They're good for neutral listening, ie if you're a recording artist - but if you want to enjoy your music, I would suggest buying something that has a bit more warmth or depth (eg Sennheiser HD598, was on ozbargain a few months ago for $180). The M50s also have a terribly strong clamping force if you have a big head - I couldn't wear them for more than half an hour at a time.
I've sold mine on head.fi - there's quite a large community selling these second-hand for ~$85-90.
Price is back down :)
I think I paid the $110 a few months ago. They are probably my favorite headphones now (and I have a few)
