Origin "we suck at maths" Sale - Battlefield 3 $10 (from $50)

1190

Hi all,

Origin has an up to 50% off sale, yet one of the first products listed is Battlefield 3 down from $50 to $10. Pretty sure that's more than 50%. Most however are at that 50% mark.

Their maths issues not withstanding, it's a sale, check it out if you want.

Explains how they calculate required server capacity.

      • +13

        Not sure if serious…..

Most personal account breaches are due to user error, or general practice error. It's just easier to scour for personal information then to crack multi million dollar security systems.

        • -3

email address is not changeable, I don't know how they changed my password.

After I received the notification password changed. I immediately use the forgot password function and changed my password. After I changed my password I received another email somebody requested password reset again.

BTW, I didn't use Origin for a few months already.

        • +7

Change your email password, and check your system for keyloggers. As Ryugen stated, they'll have hacked your account, not Origin's security system.

        • -6

I don't think so. I checked malwares for customers everyday.

If you checked whirlpool you will know I am not the only one.

Just like Yahoo got hacked a few weeks ago and they never said that.

Don't believe those big companies everybody got a chance to be hacked.

        • +5

Maybe so, but in this case its true.
Happened to me too and they wont give the account back because I forgot the security question (Favourite EA Game)

I work in IT and I'm pretty darn anal about my home machine, the only place I logged into Origin. The account now belongs to someone in the Ukraine (I can log in to origin account website via my xbox or ps3 account being linked, but cant make any changes)

Online help was bad (even with cd keys and credit card numbers)
Phone support is 1900 aka paid per minute in Australia
Email support has been 2-3 months already with no update.

        • +3

Same thing happen to me as well. My account was linked to PS3 so I was able to log in and see the ass fake details. I managed to get my account back via contacting EA through FB but it was painfully slow..

        • +4

Steam seems to be more secure than Origin

        • +5

2 personal based stories with no facts? Well, you've sold me.

        • +3

I believe you man. About a week ago, my origin account was hacked by some Russian dude. My rig is clean and used only for gaming. No malware. I don't know how they can change the password without accessing my email. And origin phone support sucks. I waited for two hours before I had to go to work.

Plenty of people in the same boat. Origin obviously has big security problems.

        • +4

Four personal stories and counting. anyone else with a hacked origin account feel free to weigh in.

        • +1

My Russian friend changed the security question. I can't even answer it because its in Russian.

2 hours waiting on ea's support line being "escalated". They can root my boot for all I care. I would rather play cod than have to put up with this crap.

        • +4

My account got password changed, my email is not hacked (Gmail shows IPs), I'm not a computer illiterate retard, my password was secure and definitely is not in any dictionaries (or if is would take 10 years to crack.)

I'm not saying Superforever is innocent here, but somehow my account was hacked when everything else I own remains secured, and my email wasn't compromised.

        • +1

It's your life. I am just giving you my 2 cents. You can take it or leave it. I really don't care.

        • +2

I had my account stolen, took about a week to finally get it back.

After getting it back I found the nickname was changed to Heteros211 with a real name of Андриян Николаев…… silly Андриян.

        • +1

Same here, my new name is Александр. They didnt access my email either. Does anyone know how they would be able to change the password without accessing email?

        • Last year I had a notification from steam that their servers had been hacked but I ignored it lol. Soon after that I got an email saying the linked email and password had been changed. I managed to retrieve the account with a photo of the key for skyrim though. So it happens to steam too, just sayin'.

        • I had to contact phone support, use Skype mate and call the USA. 20 mins phone call and it was free. ;)

        • What time did you call? I tried calling in the morning when it was evening over there and was waiting 2 hours.

        • Check out this too:-

"Origin Users are suddenly getting hacked a lot"

          http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/11/origin-users-are-suddenly-g…

        • I didn't phone them, I just used their 'live support' and then when I couldn't answer all the questions (I didn't use my real date of birth and I couldn't remember that I had a copy of Sims which is thanks to OzBargain) they just created a support ticket where they eventually got back to me.

        • Finally more peoples on my same boat.

        • +2

That concerns taking over the PC through the client, not taking over the origin account.

    • This joke will never get the positive votes it deserves

  • +35

The title is the best thing about this deal.

  • +3

Storewide is a bit of a stretch, no discount on SimCity.

    • Sadly it doesn't include games released within the last 30 days.

I really wanted all the new NFS DLC for half price! Oh well…

    • +1

      Storewide*

*Excluding what ever we have a chance at still selling or we already don't make enough money on to justify the sale

  • -3

This is an 'up to' and store wide is limited to the titles they choose. Most if not all high price items are still around the $60 mark. No deal thanks, still cheaper everywhere.

    • +1

More false advertising from EA. The definition of storewide is "including all or most merchandise in a store". Instead, EA has discounted around 40% of their titles.

Even at 50% off the sale prices barely beat the local prices in Australia at places like JB Hifi. The Sims 3 at the EA sale is $39.99, but at JB Hifi it's $34.

The only good deal there is the $10 Battlefield 3. OP, please change the link to the Battlefield 3 (http://store.origin.com/store/eaapac/en_AU/DisplayProductDet…).

      • EA is a distrubutor, they have to have a fine line between selling to stores and online cost. Company can easily cut them out like Harvey norman did to to the nintendo wii (first few years) and Kmart/target with vita.

      • "Instead, EA has discounted around 40% of their titles."

Title reads: "we suck at maths"

        :P

  • +2

    "we suck at maths" sale

    Lol

And they also suck at encryption and security

are mexico getting our 50% discount?

      • mexicans get 50% for everything

        • +1

They get pretty much 100% off everything when you consider they average about $600 every 3 months.

    • +1

      mexico is poorer

  • +2

The C&C Red Alert 17 games bundle for $20 seems good.

    • +3

Just be careful to read some reviews. This isn't a reworked collection, this is a handful of buggy games thrown at you with a 'good luck'.

      • also check amazon

        • +2

plus the original Red Alert and Tiberian Sun are freeware.

        • How do you get those games? I tried to find somewhere to download it, but their site is a mess.

        • there site got red alerted

    • +1

Although Origin is listing it at $39, the regular price at JB Hifi for that bundle is $30. If you wait for sales, I bet you can get a little better deal than $20.

  • +8

    Titles of note:

    Crysis 3 - $39.99
    Crysis 3 Digital Deluxe - $49.99
    Dead Space 3 - $39.99
    Assassins Creed III - $48.96
    Battlefield III - $9.99
    Battlefield III -
    Command & Conquer™ The Ultimate Collection $19.99
    Mass Effect 3 - $29.99
    Fifa 13 - $39.99
    DragonAge Origins - $9.99

The associated deluxe/Premium editions are also discounted but there are too many to list.

There are also a heap of NFS and Sims titles discounted too.

Not bad pricing if you like Origin, though I imagine many can be found cheaper elsewhere :)

    • Mass Effect 3 DL is cheaper from Amazon (Normal price, and the DVDs are cheaper still)

  • Apparently they suck at terms and conditions too, says "Up to 50% off storewide" but no discount whatsoever on SimCity!

    • +31

      0% is up to 50%.

      • The old nullifying clause.

When I see one of these "Up to XX% off" signs in a clothing shop I usually stop and ask to see something that's the maximum XX% off. Last time I did it was in a "glue" store and it took the attendant 10 min to find something. There were two only of the something and they were both hidden deep in the back on an obscured rack.

  • +6

    i wish they'd just use steam….

origin is up there with windows live.

    • +6

I don't really see the problem with Origin itself. I agree that I'd much rather have things on Steam, but I don't think Origin is actually any worse - it's not like it crashes regularly, or has to constantly restart. If anything it's much better than Steam in that regard.

    • GfW LIVE is dead, so there is always hope. New CEO….

Not buying EA games will help.

    • i hate EA origin so bad

but ironically i have more games on origin than steam

origin: Crysis 3, Mass effect, battlefield 3, BFBC2, Medal of Honor warfighter, sims etc etc

Steam: Cod BO2, MW3, Team fortress, Counterstrike, portal, dota 2 that is all

and i only ever play games from origin, havent touch steam games for months

maybe studios should stop publishing games with EA

      • +5

I have around 170 games on Steam and 1 on Origin - I'll hopefully never use my Origin account ever again.

    • steam is getting too fat like gabe, time to let the competition roll

  • +1

I purchased Sim City for $27 and now have Dead Space 3 as a result, Origin has certainly been delivering shitty games at great prices.

    • +2

Only time I used Origin was with the 10 'free' games. Couldn't complain about the value, but don't want to pay for that 'service'.

      • +1

^ditto, still haven't played any of them, two hundred and something dollars worth of games for free was made all the sweeter because EA weren't getting my money.

Origin is no better than Steam, and adds the inconvenience of being not-Steam.

    • How do you claim your free game?
      Thanks

  • +3

Don't forget the SimCity promo thing running

    http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/03/simcity-buyers-get-free-cop…

  • +1

CEO doing as much damage as he can since hes already resigned.

    • How bad would it be to have to write a resignation letter like this:

"My decision to leave EA is really all about my accountability for the shortcomings in our financial results this year," Riccitiello wrote. "It currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued to the Street, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. And for that, I am 100 percent accountable." - From EA CEO on March 18, 2013

  • +1

    STOP GIVING THEM MONEY.

    • +2

I don't know about anyone else, but I think I'll buy whichever games I want, thanks. I couldn't care less about the SimCity fiasco, so keep your boycott to yourself.

  • Most of those titles have been cheaper in Amazon. I remember Dragon Age collection for 9.99, FIFA 19.99, etc.

  • If they'd release all the premium content for BF3 (I own BF3 and Karkand) for 20$ they'd get some money from me :/

    • +1

It's $25 on there for BFPremium (which is all the DLC), not close enough?

      • Does that 'expire' after a period of time or do I keep it forever?

        • +1

forever - and that's a mighty long time

but i'm hear to tell you

          there's something else

          the afterworld.

a world of never ending happiness

where you can always see the sun, day and night…..

    • BF3 Premium is currently $24.99 which is the premium all DLC content addon for the base BF3. Isn't that cheap enough for you?.

  • Thanks got Back to Karkand.

  • I can get BF3 for $10 and with the free game from simcity get mass effect 3 :) Thanks

  • +1 for the title!

  • Would these titles be cheaper if I purchase it through their indian EA store?

  • Does the BF3 $10 give you online multiplayer?
I already have BF3 on PS3, but the graphics on PC looks so much better!

    • +1

Any PC copy of BF3 gives you online multiplayer. Although this BF3 being sold for $10 is the vanilla BF3 which doesn't have any of the DLC addon content. So it's only the base BF3 multiplayer maps included.

If you want BF3 with all the DLC included as in Battlefield 3 Premium Edition well that's currently $34.99

  • +1 for the title!

given a negative for the EULA of origin

    http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2011/11/02/ea-denies-ori…

"German newspaper The Spiegel also posted a list of items from Origin's license agreement, highlighting areas it believed violated German privacy law. These clauses included EA reserving the right to access data from other EA products without notifying the user, as well as the right for EA 'and partners' to "gather, use, store and transmit technical" on "IP addresses, usage data, software, equipment, software usage and existing hardware peripherals" for "marketing purposes"

I understand you can bypass origin but im not sure if its legal so will not talk about it or mention it here (just read about it).

Nothing against the poster or deal just want to let people know this before they buy

    • +2

      (a) They updated the EULA soon after. Did you read the rest of the article you posted?
      (b) I'm fairly sure it's not that different to Steam's EULA anyway
      (c) You may never want to use a Google product (or any kind of social media… hell, just the internet in general), ever, if you're so sensitive about your usage data.

I honestly don't understand people's obsession with keeping usage data private. It's not like EA is going to be combing through your computer looking for your most recent porn trends, and subsequently keep it in a server with your name, address and grandmother's date of birth. This huge objection to Origin's EULA was way overblown in the first place.

      • +1

thanks for your opinion but yes I read the article… and other peoples posts and concerns, did you? My apologies if the old artice confused you but the concerns raised are still relevant today just do a quick google. 95% of the gamers i know wont play on origin.

3000 negative votes for the game alone on amazon.

Origin amended a small part of the EULA but you agree to give information on your computer and viewing patterns for 'marketing.'

If you run any sort of good security software you can see the incoming connection also ie: peer blocker.

I recommend doing some research to understand as the concerns raised by others around origin are slightly different to what google does but there are some similiarities

Guys you are welcome to disagree but no need for personal attacks just for trying to give people information so they can make an informed decision

        • +1

          did you?

          Yes

My apologies if the old artice confused you but the concerns raised are still relevant today just do a quick google.

Linking to an outdated version of the EULA hardly helps your cause.

95% of the gamers i know wont play on origin.
3000 negative votes for the game alone on amazon.

Not really sure how either of these things are relevant.

Origin amended a small part of the EULA but you agree to give information on your computer and viewing patterns for 'marketing.'

They omitted 'marketing', and specifically mention that no identifiable information will be sold to third parties. Therefore, all EA might draw from your computer's technical information is Origin usage, specifications and other statistics, that will all end up as a dot on a graph somewhere. Hardly the spyware scandal it was made out to be, nor is it unique to Origin.

If you run any sort of good security software you can see the incoming connection also ie: peer blocker

Of course EA's software will be transmitting data to EA servers - it's what the data is that's of note. I'll follow that up with this comment from your article:

Yay. Conspiracies. So let's see what Origin really does, shall we?
If you hook process monitor onto Origin you will not see Origin scanning anything, independently of how long you use it. So what triggered the OP's screenshot?
Origin on installation will try to find games installed on your harddrive and automatically register them within Origin. It does that in a couple of different ways:
It reads the windows games registry
It looks for games in Program Files
It looks for games in ProgramData (where, for unknown reason the OP's SMS and tax software are storing the data instead of the user profile where that data should go!)
it reads the xfire config if it finds one for games
If you look at the screenshot closely you will see that it does not actually read any files. Instead it looks for their existence and recursively walks the directory. It does not read any of your files, at least not judging from this screenshot or anything I have found on my machine.
Lastly if you monitor the network traffic that Origin causes you will see that it does not transmit anything of value to EA. So far I have not seen anything bug login credentials being submitted.
But it's always so much more fun to assume that software is inherently evil. You can hook a syscall monitor on any application and you will see that it operates all over the drive. That's not something unique to Origin. Steam will do the same if you click the "add non steam game" button.
//EDIT: something I forgot: I think people should not run any sysinternals tools without a basic understanding of what they do or at least not jump to conclusions..

Also, since you're making the positive assertion that Origin is tantamount to spyware, can you provide evidence that it has ever performed actions that can be considered invasive towards the user's privacy?

I recommend doing some research to understand as the concerns raised by others around origin are slightly different to what google does but there are some similiarities

Obviously the technicalities are slightly different, but the theory remains the same - observation and recording of usage data without the user's explicit consent - which is why that point preceded my paragraph on the importance people tend to place on privacy.

        • -1

just look at the incoming connections once you connect to origin and you will understand

    • If you have nothing against the deal then don't vote neg.

Also the TOS was changed in regard to the section in question back in 2011.

edit: beaten while looking for the when this was updated.

    • Maybe do a bit more research before going around spreading misinformation
